October 22, 2019, altered my life – my Mema, the family’s matriarch, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma. Her courageous fight, detailed in a published article, ended on February 9, 2022. This reality has fueled my determination to contribute to a shift in the narrative and to demonstrate that women of color, like myself, can excel and lead in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. My experiences have also made me acutely aware of the disparities in educational opportunities, mentorship, and resources. This awareness motivates me to not only pursue a STEM degree for my growth but also to actively engage in initiatives that promote inclusivity and close the gaps that exist. While also growing on my own, I see my journey as a chance to inspire other young Black girls who may be discouraged by the lack of representation, showing them that they, too, belong in the world of STEM. In pursuing a STEM degree, I am not just seeking knowledge; I aim to strive to be a figure for change and to contribute to a more diverse and equitable future in these fields. I recognize the transformative power of representation, and I am driven to be a part of the generation that reshapes the face of STEM to be more reflective of the rich diversity within our society. Taking inspiration from the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the field, I have started by immersing myself in relevant high school courses and exploring the basics of programming languages like Python, JavaScript, etc. My career goals also consist of delving into artificial intelligence and machine learning, aiming to contribute to advancements that redefine how technology interfaces with our lives. Currently, I've been spurred into action by the growing threat of cyberattacks on our school district. Recognizing the vulnerabilities in our digital infrastructure, I am embarking on a project to design and implement a robust firewall system aimed at countering cybercriminals. The motivation behind this initiative is not only to safeguard sensitive information within our educational network but also to cultivate a secure and conducive learning environment for all students. my goal is to fortify the digital resilience of our school district, ensuring that students and educators can focus on learning without the constant threat of malicious cyber activities disrupting the educational process. This financial support would alleviate the burden of educational expenses, providing me with the freedom to pursue higher education without the constraints of looming student debt. The scholarship would not only ease the financial strain on my family but also grant me the opportunity to focus more intently on my studies and extracurricular pursuits.
