Bio

As I look forward to the future, I aim to achieve and succeed in everything I encounter, especially in a career dedicated to helping and working with children. I aspire to be a leader, a reliable figure, and someone others can look up to. My passions include helping people, dancing, and being part of a team. I enjoy making new friends and building connections with those around me. Being a first generation college student coming from a low-income family suffering from financial barriers my goal is to attend a 4-year institution, graduate with a bachelor’s degree and prove that financial circumstances don’t define your future. I want to use my education to create new opportunities for myself and inspire others from similar backgrounds. My passion for science and medicine stems from a fundamental belief that healing is more than just treating a symptom. it is about understanding the whole person. Medicine is the perfect intersection of rigorous scientific and human empathy. I am drawn to the field of pediatrics because children represent our future, they are often the most vulnerable and least heard people of our society. For me, pursuing a career as a pediatrician is not just about mastering biology it is about using science as a tool to reduce human suffering at its roots. Choosing to pursue pediatrics allows me to directly address human suffering by tackling both the physical and emotional challenges children face. True health cannot be achieved if we treat the body while ignoring the mind.

To me, selflessness is a daily commitment to looking outside of myself and asking how I can make someone else’s burden a little lighter. Growing up in Philadelphia, I have learned that community is built on the quiet, collective moments where we choose to show up for each other. True selflessness means giving your time, energy, and heart to others without expecting anything in return. Throughout my life, in my community, my faith, and my school, I have strived to embody this value by meeting people exactly where they are. One of my most meaningful experiences with community service happened during my junior year in the School District of Philadelphia. Our cheerleading team was invited to participate in an event to distribute Christmas toys to children from less fortunate families. Standing in that room and watching the kids faces light up as they received their gifts was the best. As a cheerleader, my role is usually to bring energy and spirit to a game, but that day, our team brought hope. It taught me that selflessness often looks like sharing your joy and ensuring that no child feels forgotten during the holidays regardless of their family's financial situation. This spirit of giving back is deeply rooted in my upbringing. Raised in a Christian family, faith and service have always been big for me. On weekends me and my family visited neighborhoods in Philadelphia facing high rates of homelessness to give fresh and warm meals. Handing a meal to someone who is hungry is a humbling experience. It is about much more than just providing food it is about looking people in the eye, recognizing their humanity, and letting them know they are seen and valued. This has shaped my understanding of selflessness and responsibility to care for the vulnerable people of our world. I also believe that selflessness must be practiced in our everyday. During the school year, I noticed that one of my close friends was struggling severely with their classes and was on the verge of failing. Instead of focusing on my own academic work I decided to step in. We spent hours after school studying, organizing assignments, and reviewing material. I stayed patient, breaking down tough problems until everything finally came together for them. Together, we were able to catch up on all their missing work and bring their grade up. Finally, I practice selflessness by actively lifting up those around me who battle insecurity because I was once apart of this and I understand how it feels. High school can be tough on self-esteem, and I have made it a personal mission to support my friends who struggle with low confidence. Whenever I see someone doubting themselves, I step in to remind them of their worth and encourage them to feel good in the body they are in. By listening to their insecurities without judgment and giving genuine affirmation, I try to help them see their own unique beauty and strength.

The impact I want to make is improving the health and well being of children while helping families navigate the challenges that come with accessing quality healthcare. Growing up, I saw how financial hardship can affect every aspect of a family’s life, including their ability to receive proper medical care. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career in medicine and become a pediatrician. Through my education, I hope to gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to provide compassionate, high quality care to children from all backgrounds. I want to work with underserved communities where access to healthcare may be limited and ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow up healthy and reach their full potential. I believe that early medical care can have a lasting impact on a child’s future, and I want to be part of that positive change. As a pediatrician, I hope to do more than diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatments. I want to build trusting relationships with children and their families, educate parents on preventive care, and serve as an advocate for those who may not have the resources or support needed to access quality healthcare. Many families face barriers such as financial constraints, lack of transportation, or limited healthcare options, and I want to help bridge those gaps by providing care that is both accessible and compassionate. I am especially passionate about promoting health education and preventative medicine because I believe that many health issues can be addressed before they become serious problems. By encouraging healthy habits, regular checkups, and early intervention, I hope to improve long-term health outcomes for children and reduce healthcare disparities within underserved communities. My goal is to create an environment where every child feels valued, supported, and cared for regardless of their background or circumstances. Beyond the medical field, I hope to serve as a mentor and role model for young people who may not see many healthcare professionals who come from backgrounds similar to their own. I want to show them that with hard work, perseverance, and dedication, they can achieve their goals and make a difference in the lives of others. Through medicine, service, and advocacy, I hope to leave a lasting impact on my community and help create a healthier future for generations to come. Ultimately, I want to use my voice and skills to reduce healthcare disparities and ensure that every child has an equal chance at a healthy future.

Being a first-generation college student means carrying both the responsibility and privilege of creating a new path for my family. Neither of my parents attended college due to financial barriers, so when I enrolled in college, I entered a world that was unfamiliar not only to me but also to those closest to me. While I may not have had firsthand guidance on navigating higher education, I have always had the support, encouragement, and sacrifices of my parents pushing me forward. Growing up, financial stability was often difficult to achieve. I witnessed how limited resources could affect opportunities, educational choices, and even access to healthcare. There were times when pursuing higher education felt overwhelming because of the financial burden that comes with it. However, rather than allowing these challenges to discourage me, they became my motivation. I understood that earning a college degree would not only change the trajectory of my life but also create opportunities for future generations of my family. As a first-generation student, I have learned to be resilient, resourceful, and determined. I have sought out opportunities to grow academically and personally while balancing the responsibilities that come with being a student from a disadvantaged background. Every accomplishment I achieve represents more than personal success it represents progress for my family and proof that obstacles can be overcome through hard work and perseverance. My dream is to become a pediatrician and dedicate my career to improving the health and well-being of children, especially those in underserved communities. Growing up, I saw how financial hardship could affect a family’s ability to access quality healthcare, and those experiences inspired my passion for medicine. I want to provide compassionate care, advocate for children’s health, and help families navigate the challenges of the healthcare system. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, regardless of their financial circumstances. This scholarship would help relieve the financial burden of pursuing higher education and allow me to focus more fully on my academic and professional goals. It would bring me one step closer to earning the education necessary to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. More than financial support, this scholarship would be an investment in a student who is committed to using his education to serve his community, uplift others, and create a better future. As a first-generation college student, I am determined to make the most of every opportunity and honor the sacrifices that have made my journey possible.
    Marcia Bick Scholarship
Growing up, I came from an environment where financial stability was often difficult to achieve. With two parents who were unable to attend college because of financial barriers, and being surrounded by a community where pursuing higher education was not always the norm, I witnessed firsthand how financial hardship can limit opportunities and interfere with personal ambitions. Rather than allowing these circumstances to define my future, they motivated me to pursue higher education and create opportunities not only for myself but also for those around me. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve opportunities such as scholarships and grants because talent, intelligence, and potential are not determined by income or circumstance. Many students face obstacles beyond their control, including financial hardship, limited access to resources, and family responsibilities, yet they continue to work hard and strive for success. These students often develop resilience, discipline, and determination through adversity qualities that are essential for academic and professional achievement. When given the necessary support, these students cannot only transform their own lives but also make meaningful contributions to their communities and future generations. As someone who has experienced these challenges firsthand, I understand the importance of being given an opportunity. Despite the obstacles I have faced, I have remained committed to my education and future goals. I have consistently worked hard in the classroom while also taking on leadership roles that have allowed me to serve others and develop valuable skills. These experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance, accountability, and maintaining a strong work ethic, even when circumstances are difficult. Every challenge I have encountered has strengthened my determination to succeed and prove that my background does not define my potential. Receiving this grant would help alleviate the financial burden of higher education and allow me to focus more fully on my academic and professional development. It would bring me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a physician while reducing the financial stress that often accompanies a college education. More importantly, this grant would represent an investment in a student who is committed to using his education to serve others.

The career path I am determined to pursue is Pediatrics. Growing up in an environment surrounded by babies and young children, I learned early on that caring for a child requires more than just meeting their basic needs; it requires patience, deep empathy, and a nurturing spirit. These early experiences shaped my belief that every child deserves a foundation of love and consistent support. As a pediatrician, my goal is to go beyond just treating physical illnesses. I want to be a guardian of their overall well-being. This means being a doctor who listens, and someone a child or teenager can trust when they need to get something off their chest. I believe that mental and emotional health are just as important as physical health, and I want to provide a safe space where my patients feel heard and valued. Besides education, college is an overwhelming transition into the real world such as; stepping into adulthood, taking accountability and learning important responsibilities. College is also a phase that focuses on personal independence and career preparation. The college I am planning to attend is Norfolk State University. It is truly my dream school. Beyond its reputation for academic excellence, I am drawn to the vibrant campus culture and the genuine sense of community I have experienced from the students. I am confident that the environment at NSU is where I will thrive both personally and professionally, there is no other college I would rather attend. My immediate plan is to dive straight into a pre-med major, such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Continuing my education is very important to me because I want to build a rock solid foundation in the sciences and I know that's what it takes to excel in medical school. I want to absorb as much knowledge and experiences as possible, both inside and outside the classroom. Beyond classwork, I'm also aiming to get involved in research opportunities, maybe even shadowing some pediatricians to get a real feel for the day to day life. Looking further, my ultimate goal is to practice pediatric medicine in an underserved community. I want to be the doctor who makes a difference in the lives of children who might not otherwise have access to quality healthcare. That could mean working in a clinic or volunteering in a low-income neighborhood. Whatever path I take, my focus will always be on serving those who need it most.

My name is Nah'Ajia James, an honor roll and yearly "Student of the quarter" student with a 3.75 GPA, attending the Academy at Palumbo, and actively engaged in extracurricular activities and sports/sports such as cheerleading and flag football. As a senior in high school, the most important thing is leadership. Leading underclassmen in the right direction so that when they reach their senior year, they will be great leaders as well. The career path I am determined to pursue is Pediatrics. Growing up in an environment surrounded by babies and young children, I learned early on that caring for a child requires more than just meeting their basic needs; it requires patience, deep empathy, and a nurturing spirit. That could mean working in a clinic or volunteering in a low-income neighborhood. Whatever path I take, my focus will always be on serving those who need it most. My education and anticipated degree in Pediatrics will be my primary tool for solving the cycle of emotional neglect as well. I do not want to be a doctor who treats ear infections or monitors growth charts; I want to ensure that I meet the needs of the children I take care of for their mental well-being. During appointments, I plan to implement mental wellness screenings for both the child and the parent. This allows me to identify early signs of emotional withdrawal before it escalates. I will use my ability as a trusted medical professional to provide resources on gentle parenting and teach mothers and fathers how to boost a child’s confidence. I also intend to create a safe space where children can feel comfortable to discuss their feelings, helping them with the self-worth that I once struggled to find. A child’s mental well-being is just as important as their physical health. By pursuing my degree, I am dedicating my future to ensuring that no child feels alone in a full house. I will put my all into becoming a pediatrician who breaks the cycle of emotional absence and helps the next generation grow up confident, both inside and out.
