Bio

Hello! My name is Nadia, and I'm studying American Sign Language/English interpreting at Valdosta State University. While I'm pursuing ASL now, my journey began at SCAD with a passion for acting. Despite achieving what seemed impossible, I couldn't attend SCAD due to financial reasons. My goal is to succeed in both the performing arts and interpreting to show that it's possible to follow your dreams while pursuing multiple passions. I strive to make a influence in this world and I intend to make a impact.

Though my major is American Sign Language (ASL), my story began with a passion for acting. It was always a dream of mine to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to further my dream of becoming an actress and to follow my passion. I even achieved what I thought would be impossible by producing a short film on my iPhone, which earned me a spot at SCAD. Despite my efforts, I was devastated to realize that I couldn't afford the tuition and had to put that dream on hold for the time being. I was fortunate to have another passion that I had been pursuing since elementary school: American Sign Language. I decided to enroll in Valdosta State University in order to pursue a degree in American Sign Language. At first, I struggled with this change, and I didn't enjoy my time there at all. Eventually, though, I got accustomed to it and realized how much of a difference it can make to the lives of people in the Black Deaf community, both for advocating for ASL and for empowering other members of the Black Deaf community. It has become my goal to educate others about the significance of ASL and to create a space where everyone can have a voice and communicate with one another. As a person with skills in American Sign Language, I am able to bridge communication barriers and ensure that everyone, especially those who are deaf or hard of hearing, feel included and understood in the process. Using my education, I'll bring more awareness to the Deaf community, especially the Black Deaf community. I'm on a mission to make information more accessible to everyone, reaching a broader audience that many don't reach. In order to do that, I'll be creating campaigns about Deaf culture, hosting events that provide ASL resources, and incorporating community service to promote inclusion. By using American Sign Language (ASL), I am actively addressing the social issue of communication accessibility. For the Deaf and hard of hearing people, ASL is essential in removing barriers to communication. I aim to create circumstances where everyone, regardless of hearing ability, may effectively communicate and participate in society by raising awareness of and educating people about ASL. By giving people the ability to completely express themselves and interact with others on the same level, ASL empowers people, promoting inclusivity and bridging communication and comprehension gaps. I aim to advance social justice while also making sure that opportunities for people with deafness are no longer restricted by communication obstacles by advocating for and teaching people about ASL. I want to make our society a more open and inclusive place where communication barriers break down. In advocating for Black Deaf communities and spreading awareness about the important of ASL, I hope to create lasting change that benefits not just the Deaf community but society at large.
