Bio

As a first-generation college student from rural South Carolina, I've learned that opportunity isn't always equally distributed. Instead of accepting that reality, I created Empowered Futures, a nonprofit dedicated to helping underserved youth gain access to mentorship, educational resources, and life-changing opportunities. Through service and advocacy, I've worked to create programs that inspire students to believe in futures bigger than the communities helping students realize that their dreams are not limited by where they come from. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA at USC Upstate and earning recognition on the Dean's List and as Participant of the Year, I've remained committed to using education as a tool to create lasting change. My long-term goal is to become a leader in mental health and community development, ensuring that young people from underserved communities have access to the support and opportunities they deserve.

Neal Hartl Memorial Sales/Marketing Scholarship
I became interested in marketing before I realized that what I was doing was actually marketing. As the founder of Empowered Futures, I have had to take ideas that existed only in my mind and find ways to help others understand why they matter. By developing a youth program, creating promotional materials, reaching out to potential supporters, and encouraging people to participate in events, I have learned how communication helps turn ideas into action and increases participation and support. My interest in sales and marketing comes from my creativity and my desire to connect people with opportunities, ideas, and organizations that can benefit them. I have learned that having a great idea is only the beginning. If you cannot communicate its value, reach the right audience, and build trust, even a strong idea can go unnoticed. Marketing gives businesses and organizations the ability to tell their stories in ways that make people want to listen, participate, and support their mission. Building Empowered Futures has given me firsthand experience with this. As a growing nonprofit, we do not have unlimited resources or a large marketing department. I have had to think creatively about how to promote programs, communicate our mission, approach potential sponsors, and create experiences that appeal to young people and their families. Every flyer, outreach message, event idea, and partnership opportunity has taught me how to reach the people we serve and encourage them to engage with our work. Understanding an audience, communicating with purpose, and helping our work reach the people it is meant to serve. I am also drawn to marketing because it combines creativity with strategy. I enjoy coming up with ideas, but I am equally interested in understanding why certain ideas succeed. What makes someone pay attention? What causes people to trust a brand? Why does one message inspire someone to take action while another is ignored? These questions interest me because marketing is not simply about selling a product. It is about understanding people and finding the best way to communicate value to them. What distinguishes it for me is the balance of creativity, analysis, and human insight. My studies in Organizational Leadership have strengthened this interest because leadership and marketing both require an understanding of people. A successful leader must know how to communicate a vision and inspire others to believe in it. A successful marketer must do something similar by understanding an audience and communicating a message that connects with their needs. In the future, I want to use sales and marketing skills in both my professional career and entrepreneurial efforts. I want to learn how to build strong brands, develop meaningful partnerships, attract funding and support, and expand ideas that create opportunities for others and help more people connect with what they need. My motivation is bigger than simply selling something. I want to become someone who knows how to take a valuable idea and give it the visibility it deserves. Marketing lets me combine creativity, leadership, communication, and strategy to support ideas that create opportunities and help more people connect with what they need. Those skills will help me build a successful career while also expanding the impact I can make in my community.
Early Childhood Developmental Trauma Legacy Scholarship
Early childhood development trauma can shape a person’s entire life. It affects not only emotional well-being but also academic success, relationships, and physical health. Children who experience abuse, neglect, or instability may grow up with feelings of fear, shame, and mistrust. They might struggle to form healthy relationships, manage emotions, or feel safe in the world. Over time, these unresolved wounds can turn into depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or cycles of poverty. I have seen the consequences of early trauma up close. Growing up in a rural, low-income area, I knew children who carried the weight of adult problems on their small shoulders. Some of them were incredibly bright but felt unseen and unsupported, leading them to disengage from school and lose hope for their futures. Witnessing this gave me a deep desire to be the adult I wish those children had someone who listens, encourages, and helps guide them toward healing and stability. Therefore, I pursued a degree in social work. My goal is to become a licensed social worker specializing in child and family services. I want to be on the front lines, identifying children impacted by trauma early on and connecting them with resources that can change their path. I believe prevention and early intervention are key. Through mentorship, counseling, and advocacy, I can help create safe spaces for children to express themselves, learn coping skills, and rebuild trust. My work with The Big Sister Program and EmpowerED Futures has already shown me the power of connection. In these programs, I’ve mentored young girls who were facing challenges at home and in school. I’ve watched them open up over time, believe in their abilities, and set goals they never thought possible. By providing academic support, emotional encouragement, and a consistent presence, I’ve seen firsthand how even minor acts of care can create a lasting impact. Combating early childhood trauma requires a holistic approach. It’s not just about addressing the immediate emotional wounds; it’s about creating stability in all areas of a child’s life. That means working alongside families, schools, and community organizations to ensure children have access to food, shelter, education, and emotional support. It also means advocating for policies that protect vulnerable children and improve access to mental health services, especially in underserved areas like my hometown. This mission is deeply personal for me because I know what it feels like to face hardship and still have to find a way forward. I’ve had to overcome my own challenges, including moments where I questioned my purpose. Those experiences taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of having someone believe in you. They also solidified my commitment to being that person for others. As a future social worker, I plan to use my education, personal experiences, and nonprofit work to fight for children who can’t yet fight for themselves. I want every child to know they are more than what happened to them, that their future can be bright, safe, and full of opportunity. Early trauma does not have to define the rest of their lives. With the right support, it can become the foundation for strength, perseverance, and growth.
