One global issue that deeply concerns me is the growing misunderstanding and tension between the Middle East and the United States. As someone who was born to Sudanese parents, raised in the U.S., and identifies strongly with my African American muslim background, I have seen firsthand how misconceptions, stereotypes, and political divisions can create barriers between people who actually have much to learn from one another. This divide has serious consequences—not just for diplomacy and security, but also for everyday individuals who deserve respect, opportunity, and peace.
My passion for bridging this gap is a major reason why I chose to study International Relations with a minor in Economics. I believe that through diplomacy, open communication, and mutual respect, we can start to rebuild trust and find common ground. I have already started to be part of the solution through the work I have done at Penn State. As an Orientation Leader and a Peer Advisor, I supported students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom were international or first-generation like me. These roles taught me the power of empathy, listening, and creating welcoming spaces—skills I believe are essential for diplomacy.
Winning the Gilman Scholarship and participating in the CIEE study abroad program in Amman, Jordan, is another step I am taking toward this goal. While there, I am not only advancing my Arabic skills but also conducting research on Jordan’s geopolitical balancing strategies. My project examines how Jordan manages its borders, remains neutral in regional conflicts, and engages globally—lessons that can offer valuable insights for how the Middle East and the U.S. might better navigate their own relationship. Working under the mentorship of Dr. Oak Pongsree, I am learning how to combine research, cross-cultural experience, and policy thinking to approach complex international issues.
In the future, I want to continue being part of the solution by joining the U.S. Foreign Service and serving as a diplomat in the Middle East. I envision myself not just negotiating agreements behind closed doors but also building person-to-person connections that humanize both sides. I want to organize cultural exchange programs, economic initiatives, and community projects that show how much stronger we are when we work together. It’s important to me that diplomacy isn't just about high-level politics—it’s about helping real people understand each other and live better lives.
In every role I have taken on so far—whether advising students, working with international programs, or engaging with the United Nations Association—I have tried to live out this mission. I believe true change starts with small conversations, everyday understanding, and the willingness to see beyond labels. By continuing to study, build relationships, and eventually represent my country abroad, I am committed to being part of the solution to one of the challenges I care most deeply about.
TEAM ROX Scholarship
Dear Scholarship Committee,
I trust this correspondence finds you well. My name is Nabeel Adam, a dedicated Muslim Penn State student actively involved in campus life, and I am writing to express my earnest desire to be considered for the scholarship opportunity. I firmly believe that my multifaceted experiences and unwavering commitment to fostering a supportive academic environment make me an excellent candidate for this scholarship.
My journey towards skill development and passion cultivation commenced with the realization that education extends beyond individual achievement to the creation of a community that uplifts and supports one another. In my capacity as a peer advisor, where I assist fellow students in navigating the complexities of selecting classes and declaring majors, I have honed robust interpersonal and communication skills. This role has afforded me the privilege of understanding the unique needs and aspirations of each student, allowing me to actively listen and provide informed advice. Through this, I seek to empower my peers to make decisions aligned with their academic and personal goals.
As a Muslim student, I am particularly attuned to the significance of cultural sensitivity and empathy. Recognizing the diverse perspectives within our academic community, I appreciate the uniqueness of each individual's educational journey and understand the impact of cultural, religious, and personal factors on academic choices. This awareness has not only enhanced my effectiveness as a peer advisor but has also fueled my passion for contributing to the creation of an inclusive and supportive campus environment.
Beyond my advisory role, active involvement in various clubs has been instrumental in expanding my impact within the campus community. Whether participating in cultural, religious, or service-oriented clubs, I have collaborated with like-minded individuals sharing a common goal of making a positive difference. These experiences have augmented my teamwork and leadership skills, enabling me to contribute effectively to the collective growth and success of shared initiatives.
Volunteering, a cornerstone of my commitment to helping others excel, has provided me with a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by individuals beyond the campus environment. Engaging in initiatives such as tutoring programs, food drives, and community outreach projects, I have witnessed the transformative power of education and support in uplifting those facing adversity. These experiences have fueled my passion for service and instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others.
In summary, my journey as a Muslim Penn State student has been characterized by a continuous commitment to skill development and passion cultivation. As a peer advisor, I have refined my interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and empathy, enabling me to guide my peers effectively. Active involvement in clubs has broadened my horizons, fostering teamwork and leadership abilities, while volunteering has deepened my understanding of the impact of education and support on individuals facing challenges. Through these experiences, I have not only developed as an individual but have also made it my purpose to help others be their best, thereby contributing to the creation of a supportive and inclusive campus community.
I am confident that my dedication to academic excellence, coupled with my commitment to service and community building, aligns seamlessly with the values of this scholarship. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my candidacy further and to contribute actively to the scholarship's mission.
Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,

Subject: Scholarship Application and Personal Statement
اَلسَلامُ عَلَيْكُم وَرَحْمَةُ اَللهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ.
I am writing to express my sincere interest in the [Al Haj Abdallah R Abdallah scholarship] to support my education at Penn State University. My name is Nabeel Adam, a second year student majoring in International Relations, maintaining a 3.38 GPA.
Born in Sudan, my connection to the country was deeply rooted in annual visits, providing opportunities to enhance my Arabic proficiency, reconnect with family, explore the country, and immerse myself in the rich culture. Unfortunately, the recent conflict has wrought devastation, affecting every resident through looting, air strikes, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and many more horrific events. Despite my family's struggles in Sudan, this scholarship could alleviate financial burdens and allow me to contribute to their well being during these challenging times.
One of my notable weaknesses is kindness, this comes from my urge in manifesting in my willingness to help others in times of need, even at personal expense. This quality, while occasionally resulting in the loss of borrowed assets, underscores my commitment to assisting those in need whether they are close friends or strangers. On the flip side, my strongest attributes lie in productivity and time management. Juggling three simultaneous jobs during the summer and currently balancing academic responsibilities with two jobs, including a position as a Peer Advisor at the University, demonstrates my ability to excel in multiple roles.
A book that has significantly influenced my outlook is "The 48 Laws of Power," offering valuable insights into navigating life and managing relationships. In addition, the song "Ana Dammi Falastni" by Mohammed Assaf resonates with me, as it embodies pride and patriotism for one's country.
One of my most meaningful achievements is assisting my friend Diveon, who, despite being Christian, expressed an interest in Islam. After extensive research and memorizing Quranic verses, he officially reverted to Islam at Masjid al Rashedeen in Philadelphia. Witnessing this transformation was a profoundly moving experience, reinforcing my belief in fostering understanding and unity among diverse communities.
In conclusion, I believe that my background, values, and experiences make me a suitable candidate for the [Al Haj Abdallah R Abdallah scholarship]. While I acknowledge that there may be other qualified applicants, I am genuinely committed to utilizing this opportunity to contribute positively to both my academic journey and, more importantly, to the well being of my family in Sudan.
Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Nabeel Adam

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ . My name is Nabeel Adam and I'm a Sudanese student currently attending Penn State University. My family and I came to America in the hope of a better life since Sudan was having heavy government problems, and ongoing corruption, and was in the middle of a civil war. Alhamdulillah, we ended up doing better here however we still go back every summer to connect with family so that we get a better understanding of culture and langue. My major will be International and Global Studies and I am passionate about pursuing it because I want to get a position with an organization like the UN to help underprivileged children in countries like Palestine and Syria reach their true potential. I hope to get a job as a humanities or social worker and help solve global conflicts. I believe my friends and family inspired me to pursue this career. This is because some of my friends from struggling Arab/African countries always complain about why European countries and countries with prudently white citizens get the support and attention while our countries and Nations barely reach the news. I felt like a change needed to happen and I was going to do the best I can to make this happen. On top of that, I always had an interest in geography and working abroad, this comes from my love to travel, I do not enjoy staying in one place for too long. I have made a difference by volunteering and supporting my local mosque (Masjid Al-Rashdeen). I did this by helping out whenever I can, cleaning the place up, bringing in food, and often donating there. I would also like to add a childhood friend of mine wanted to become Muslim and asked me to help him with the transition. I gladly gave him the information he needed like how to pray, how fasting works, what the 5 pillars were, and last but not least taking him to the masjid to take his Shhadaa. I am glad to say he is not a dedicated Muslim and my mosque means a lot to me. In addition to that I sometimes volunteer at a local Arabic school called "The Sudanese learning center of Philadelphia". Therefore I believe I have made a difference in my community and will keep pushing to do more. Last but not least being a Muslim to me means not just following your religion correctly but also living a life of complete submission to Allah, believing that nothing can happen without Allah’s permission, and following prophet Mohmmed sallallahu alaihi wasallam's teachings..

As a Sudanese immigrant student, I strongly believe that education is one of the most important assets that anyone can acquire along with networking. Education has brought immense value to my life, not just in terms of academic success, but also in terms of personal growth and development.

Through my studies, I have been able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and learn from their experiences and perspectives. Doing this enhanced my ability of networking with people from different markets so I could get a sense of what I really wanted to accomplish in life.
Moreover, education has empowered me to be an informed and responsible citizen. Through my studies, I have gained a deeper understanding of social, economic, and political issues that affect our society. This has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to participate in civic activities and contribute to positive social change. This is why often volunteer, work with nonprofit organizations, and strongly believe in giving back to my community.

Education has broadened my horizons, empowered me to be an informed citizen, and provided me with opportunities for personal growth and development.

One attribute that makes me unique is my work ethic. Juggling a full time job and attending university is no easy feat, it requires a level of commitment and determination that I had trouble getting used to my first semester and that not everyone possesses. However, I overcame these challenges and now have a strong sense of responsibility and an understanding of the importance of hard work in achieving my long term goals. Secondly, another attribute that sets me apart is my multicultural perspective. As an immigrant, I have experienced different cultures, traditions, and values, which has broadened my worldview and made me more accepting of diversity. Additionally, I believe my desire to learn my country's langue of Arabic displays a willingness to embrace new languages and further enhance my multicultural perspective.
Playing soccer and running track is another attribute that makes me unique. I like to look at the sports I play as a unifying force, bringing me closer to people regardless of their background or beliefs. Playing these sports also provides an outlet for stress and a healthy way to stay physically active, which is essential when juggling a busy schedule.
Finally, being raised in a very giving Muslim community, my desire to give back is another admirable attribute. Despite my busy schedule, I recognize the importance of giving back and making a positive impact. I often volunteer at Sunday classes at my local mosque, donate to charitable causes like the recent devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and every once in a while helping start up and or get a fundraiser running. Last but not least I give back by being a positive role model and mentor to younger generations. This includes at my workspace, volunteering at the mosque, and sampling and helping those younger than me who see me as a role model like my siblings and cousins. I often share my experiences and inspire others to pursue their goals, no matter the challenges they may face.
In conclusion, the attributes that make me, a young immigrant college student who works a full time job, attends university, plays multiple sports, and is trying to learn Arabic unique are my work ethic, multicultural perspective, love of sports, and desire to give back to their community. By using my skills and experiences to support others, I can make a positive impact on my community and inspire others to do the same.
