Bio

I am a senior at Sherwood high school and a dual-enrolled student at Montgomery Community College. I am getting ahead start to my college career through dual enrollment in computer science and business classes. My interest in this area was sparked by a growing interest in technology and economics. I aspire to continue my education and aim for a master's or Ph.D. degree. As far as my career is concerned, my ultimate goal is to one day build a company based on software or something in the technology area. I will enjoy working as a software developer because of the constant expansion of technology, which creates new and different problems to solve. As an Eagle Scout after 12 years in Boy Scouts, I have learned a lot and have applied many of the experiences to serve the community. I’ve had opportunities to participate in many events with different organizations to plan and organize many events such as running a bingo night for Manorcare seniors, distributing food during the Covid-19 pandemic, making masks for the elderly and hospital donations, teaching the Vietnamese seniors how to use technology, etc. In addition, I also spend lots of time on my own to serve my community, some of which are my Eagle Project to renovate a local Buddhist temple that I attend every weekend, participate in community trash pick-ups, tutor students at Temple and Our First Lady Church Vietnamese school, and participate in many other community services. In total, I have accumulated over 360+ hours of community service, which demonstrates the amount of effort I have contributed to my local community.

From a young age, I have been fascinated by technology and innovation. I taught myself to code in middle school, joining coding clubs and summer STEM programs. In high school, I took every computer science course available, earning top marks in classes like AP Computer Science and Programming in Java. Outside of school, I expanded my skills through programs like the George Mason “Envision” academies, where I gained hands-on experience in game design, machine learning, and software development. Through these experiences, my eyes were opened to the power of technology to drive progress and improve lives. My coursework ignited in me a lifelong passion for using computing to tackle major challenges and make a positive difference in the world. I have complemented my technical education with diverse leadership and service experiences that have shaped me into a compassionate, conscientious leader. As an Eagle Scout, I planned and led a major 150-hour community service project renovating a local temple. Managing 15 volunteers, soliciting donations, and problem-solving through unexpected setbacks taught me invaluable project management, communication, and teamwork skills that I apply to my computer science work today. I have also served my community by patiently teaching computer skills to seniors and Vietnamese language/culture to children over several years. Developing the empathy and ability to connect with broad groups of people through teaching has shown me how proper technology design requires understanding diverse users' needs. In college, I hit the ground running, immediately joining the competitive Army ROTC program while tackling a rigorous computer science curriculum. Selflessness is a quality that I hold close to my heart and strive to embody in every aspect of my life. To me, selflessness means putting the needs and well-being of others before my own, and consistently seeking opportunities to lend a helping hand. Throughout my life, I have been fortunate enough to encounter several instances where I could demonstrate selflessness and make a positive impact on someone in need. One particular example that stands out in my mind is when I volunteered at a local homeless shelter during the winter season. The harsh weather conditions were taking a toll on the homeless population in our community, and I felt compelled to do something to alleviate their suffering. I organized a clothing drive at my school, reaching out to fellow students, teachers, and community members to donate warm clothes, blankets, and other essential items. The response was overwhelming, and we were able to collect an abundance of donations. On the day of the event, I spent hours at the shelter, sorting through the donations and distributing them to the homeless individuals. Seeing the gratitude and warmth in their eyes as they received the much-needed items was an incredibly rewarding experience. Moreover, I took the time to sit and listen to their stories, providing a listening ear and offering words of encouragement. Through this act of selflessness, I not only provided material support but also showed compassion and reminded them that they are not alone. Another instance where I embodied selflessness was when I volunteered at a local nursing home. Many of the residents there were elderly individuals who were lonely and yearned for companionship. I recognized the importance of human connection and decided to dedicate my time to brighten their days. I organized weekly visits, engaging in meaningful conversations, playing games, and even learning about their life stories. One particular resident, Mrs. Johnson, had no family nearby and often felt isolated. I made it a point to visit her regularly, sharing stories, and creating a bond that brought joy to both of our lives. Witnessing her smile and hearing her laughter made me realize the power of selflessness and the profound impact it can have on the lives of others. In addition to these specific examples, I consistently seek out opportunities to lend a helping hand in my community. Whether it is volunteering at local food banks, participating in environmental clean-up initiatives, or offering academic support to struggling students, I strive to make a positive difference in any way I can. As someone who is passionate about computer science and technology, I have always been interested in creating solutions to problems through software and digital tools. One problem that I have encountered and would like to solve is the lack of accessibility and convenience when it comes to finding and booking affordable and reliable transportation services in my local area. Living in a suburban area, I have often struggled with finding reliable and affordable transportation options when I need to travel to nearby cities or airports. Taxi services are often expensive and can be unreliable, while public transportation can be time-consuming and inconvenient. Even ride-sharing services can be costly, especially during peak hours or in areas with high demand. To solve this problem, I have envisioned a mobile app that connects riders with drivers who offer affordable, safe, and reliable transportation services in their local area. The app would allow riders to input their pickup and drop-off locations, select their preferred vehicle type, and view the estimated fare before booking a ride. It would also allow drivers to register and offer their services, with the option to set their own rates and availability. To ensure safety and reliability, drivers would undergo a thorough background check and have their vehicles inspected before being approved to offer their services through the app. Riders would be able to rate and review drivers after their ride, ensuring that only the best and most reliable drivers are available on the platform. To make the app accessible to a wide range of users, it would be available in multiple languages and offer various payment options, including credit/debit cards, PayPal, and mobile wallets. The app would also offer a rewards program, where users can earn points and redeem them for discounts on future rides. To bring this vision to life, I would need to secure funding and resources to hire a team of developers, designers, and marketing professionals to create and launch the app. I would also need to conduct market research and work with transportation service providers to ensure that the app meets the needs and demands of both riders and drivers. If I were to further develop this idea, I would focus on creating a prototype of the app to test its effectiveness and work out any potential kinks or issues. This would involve working with a team of developers and designers to bring the concept to life and ensure that it functions smoothly. In addition, I would need to invest in marketing and advertising to get the word out about the app and its benefits. This could involve social media advertising, targeted marketing campaigns, and partnerships with educational institutions and organizations to promote the app to their students and members. To maintain the app's effectiveness and relevance, I would also need to continually update and improve it based on user feedback and changing technological trends. This could involve investing in ongoing research and development, as well as regular updates and upgrades to the app's features and functionality. Overall, creating an app like this would require a significant investment of time, money, and resources. However, I believe that the potential impact it could have on students' mental health and academic success makes it a worthwhile endeavor. By providing students with a tool to manage their stress and prioritize their well-being, we can help them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.

    Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ album is a masterpiece that captures the essence of the pop genre, and one song in particular that speaks to me is “Wildest Dreams.” The song is a beautiful ballad that touches on themes of love, loss, and nostalgia. The lyrics are relatable to my life experiences, and the melody is captivating, leaving a lasting impression on me. The first verse of “Wildest Dreams” talks about the beauty of a fleeting romance, “He said, let's get out of this town / Drive out of the city / Away from the crowds.” This resonates with me because it reminds me of my first love. We used to talk about running away and starting a new life together, away from the noise and chaos of our surroundings. The song’s chorus, “Say you'll remember me / Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe / Red lips and rosy cheeks / Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams,” is hauntingly beautiful, and the melody draws me in every time I listen to it. The second verse talks about the pain of losing someone you love, “He said, let's just forget it / And I said, I don't know / I can't even remember what I came here for / But I can tell that it's true / I was stumbling, looking in the dark / Oh, I'm begging through broken glass.” This verse speaks to me because it reminds me of a time when I lost someone close to me. It was a painful experience that left me feeling lost and confused. The song’s bridge, “I can see the end as it begins / My one condition is / Say you'll remember me / Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset, babe / Red lips and rosy cheeks / Say you'll see me again even if it's just in your wildest dreams,” is a powerful message that speaks to the human desire to be remembered. In conclusion, “Wildest Dreams” is a song that captures the essence of love, loss, and nostalgia. The beautiful melody, haunting lyrics, and relatable themes make it one of my favorite songs on Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ album. The song speaks to me on a personal level, reminding me of my first love and the pain of loss. It is a testament to the power of music to capture the emotions and experiences of our lives.

Being a part of a team, working hard to achieve goals, and overcoming obstacles are some of the reasons why I’m passionate about sports. Playing sports has taught me many important life lessons. One of the most important lessons is teamwork. As a part of a team, you learn to work with others towards a common goal. You learn to rely on your teammates and trust them, and you also learn to be accountable for your own actions. This is something that I have taken with me outside of sports, and it has helped me become a better collaborator in group projects at school and a better colleague in the workplace. Another important lesson I’ve learned through sports is discipline. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become a good athlete. You have to put in the hours of practice, eat a balanced diet, and get enough rest to perform at your best. This type of discipline has helped me in other areas of my life, such as my academics and my personal life. It has taught me to set goals, work hard towards them, and to never give up. Playing sports has also taught me the importance of perseverance. There are times when things don’t go your way and it’s easy to get discouraged. However, in sports, you learn to pick yourself up and keep pushing forward. You learn to stay focused on the end goal and to never give up. This is a valuable lesson that has helped me face challenges in other areas of my life. Furthermore, playing sports has taught me the value of hard work. There are no shortcuts in sports, and success only comes through hard work and dedication. This lesson has taught me to approach everything in life with a strong work ethic. It has also taught me to appreciate the value of putting in the time and effort to achieve something meaningful. In conclusion, sports have been a significant part of my life, and I am grateful for the lessons they have taught me. The teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and hard work that I’ve learned through sports have helped me become a better person, student, and future employee. I believe that these lessons will continue to be valuable throughout my life, and I will carry them with me always.

I have also volunteered at food distribution events for those in need, sorted books at the Marilyn J Praisner Library, and assisted seniors in nursing facilities. Academically, I have been recognized for outstanding achievement, leadership potential, and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine through the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Award of Excellence. Eleven Scholarship
There was a time when I faced a challenge that completely shattered my confidence and left me questioning my abilities. It was during my sophomore year of high school when I decided to join the football team. Despite having played the sport before, I quickly realized that the level of competition was much higher than I anticipated. During one of the team practices, I was tasked with blocking a much bigger and more experienced player. I felt confident in my abilities and went in with all my strength, only to be easily pushed aside. This was just the beginning of my struggles. Every practice was a battle and I couldn't seem to keep up with my teammates. My confidence took a hit and I started to question whether I belonged on the team. I knew I couldn't let this setback define me. I decided to turn it up to 11 and push myself harder than ever before. I started to arrive at practice early and stay late, working on my technique and conditioning. I even asked some of the more experienced players for advice and tips on how to improve. My hard work started to pay off. I began to notice improvements in my skills and my coaches took notice too. They started giving me more opportunities to prove myself, which only fueled my determination to succeed. Eventually, my hard work and dedication paid off. I was able to hold my own against some of the toughest players on the team and even started to earn some playing time. I had proven to myself and my teammates that I was capable of overcoming challenges and pushing through setbacks. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and determination. It also showed me that setbacks are not the end of the road, but rather an opportunity to push ourselves harder and prove our worth. It taught me the value of hard work and the importance of seeking advice and guidance from others. Furthermore, this experience helped me to develop my leadership skills. I learned that the best way to lead is by example, and that success is not just about individual achievement but also about supporting and uplifting others around you. Looking back on this experience, I am proud of what I was able to achieve. It was a difficult time, but it helped shape me into the person I am today. It taught me that with hard work, dedication, and perseverance, I can overcome any challenge that comes my way..

I am proud to be Vietnamese. I am very fond of my Vietnamese heritage. My heritage consists of various traditions and customs that are all different, but all are very unique. Some of the most well-known traditions/customs that Vietnam is known for are Tết Trung Thu and Tết Nguyên Đán. But to me, I believe that Tháng Tư Đen is the most Memorial Day; because this day is when so many Vietnamese soldiers died protecting South Vietnam’s freedom and rights. And we must show our respects towards them because we, the Vietnamese community, would not be where we are today without them. Which ties into the Vietnamese cultural values that deeply emphasize family and community, with some of its core beliefs being respect, honor, and education. All of these I have been taught since little, like respect/greeting all adults, studying hard in school, eating together and talking in Vietnamese together and doing extracurriculars to help with my future such as Huong Dao Vietnam, which has taught me a lot of life skills, all of which have had a factor in shaping me into the person who I am today. I am proud of the person that I have become and am excited to see where these lessons will continue to guide me towards, whether they are new opportunities or decisions to make in the future. As an Eagle Scout in Huong Dao Vietnam awarded in 2021 and after 12 years in scouting, I have learned a lot and have applied many of the experiences to serve the community. Nha Vietnam is one of the nonprofit organizations that I have been involved in, and they exclusively are dedicated to the creation and sustainability of a strong community for Vietnamese Americans. I’ve had opportunities to participate in many events with Nha Vietnam to plan and organize many events such as running a bingo night for Vietnamese seniors, distributing food during the Covid-19 pandemic, helping my mom in making masks for elderly and hospital donations, teaching the Vietnamese seniors how to use technology, etc. In total, I have accumulated over 350+ hours of community service, which demonstrates the amount of effort I have contributed to both the Vietnamese community and my local community. Being a child of Vietnamese immigrant parents, I’ve never gotten to explore and discover many of the experiences that kids whose families have lived here for a while have. Going into high school, there were so many different opportunities that were offered to students. However, the teachers/schools never held assemblies to let all of the students know or encourage them to do these, limiting students like myself. But by stepping out of my comfort zone to ask I was able to learn about this extraordinary dual enrollment opportunity. When I started the dual program, I was met by passionate professors teaching the class lectures, which made classes so captivating. This was the first time in a while that I’ve ever felt so eager about going to class. In fact, most nights I stayed up late trying to learn all the extra information in the classes that were optional material, or rather “tricks to impress people at parties” my professor would say. During the several months that I have been here so far, I’ve rediscovered my passion for learning and a possible interest in a major that blends creativity. Now, imagining my future college career, I can’t help but wonder what amazing experience it will bring to the table. I’ve only gotten a taste of what is out there waiting for me. In all, if I never took a leap of faith, I wouldn’t have found this opportunity, and because of this fact, I know for sure there are students out there who might be missing out on life-changing opportunities without knowing it.

I am a senior at Sherwood high school, but I plan to be a computer science major. A growing interest in technology sparked my interest in this area. I am planning to graduate from possible UMD or UMBC in 2027. After graduation, I will likely continue my education and aim for a master's or Ph.D. degree. As far as my career is concerned, my ultimate goal is to one day build a company based on software or something in the technology area. I will enjoy working as a software developer because of the constant expansion of technology, which creates new and different problems to solve; and I believe I can make substantial contributions to my field. For example, because I am a creative and innovative thinker, I can find many solutions to solve a problem. This scholarship will be a huge help, especially now because, over the past few years, my dad has had a hard finding work because he is self-employed and works for many local businesses, which shut down during the pandemic. This caused our family to have to rely on my mom's single income source. So any amount of money will help relieve some pressure off my parents who are working super hard to make ends meet. In addition, I also have a track record of tons of leadership and meaningful involvement in my community. One great example of this can be seen in my experience during my Eagle Scout Project. This project was no easy task. I spent over 150+ hours planning, getting documentation and licenses, fund-raising, organizing, and reviewing to ensure everything would go perfectly. But it wasn’t smooth sailing from there, because at the time the Covid-19 house lockdown had just slightly lifted. So this meant that only a limited number of people that were allowed to be in one place, making it very difficult to carry out such a big project. Subsequently, I had to go back and reevaluate my plans. But luckily after communicating with the Home Depot manager, I was able to borrow a skid steer machine free of charge. Within a span of a week, the temple looked like a whole different place. The expanded parking lot provided much more room for the small community of visitors, along with the expanded and flatten out backyard providing a safer space for events and kids to play. Although it may not have been the most eye-catching or impressive project. It was a memorable project for me to be able to give back and continue to nourish the small Vietnamese community that I grew up in so that others can continue having the same opportunity as well.

Every Saturday evening for as long as I can remember, my family and I would go to a Buddhist temple to say our prayers. It was a small temple, but it would always be crowded with tons of Vietnamese people every time we visited. As lively as it was on the inside, the outside was a different story. The property looked like a house on top of a chunk from Mars with brown wilting grass sprinkled on top. The temple looked horrific, and I wanted to make some changes. But knowing the little impact that I had on these adults' decisions, I instead suggested changes to the people who went there and even the head of monks. But of course, nothing really changed. I understood, however, why many things never got done at the temple, the root cause, money. The temple had almost no income whether from donations, etc, to use on things like renovations. I was unsatisfied and decided to take matters into my own hand. After an anxious year of waiting, I went and asked for permission from the head monk to renovate the temple’s land explaining to him that it was not right to have a temple surrounded by landfill-like sight. After getting permission for making this project my Eagle Project, I spent countless hours planning, getting documentation and licenses, fund-raising, organizing, and reviewing. But luckily after negotiating with the Home Depot manager, I was able to rent a skid steer machine free of charge for the project. Within a span of a week, the temple looked like a whole different place. The flourishing blood-red roses and thriving vivid green grass lit up the house like Christmas lights on a tree. The expanded parking lot provided much more room for the small community of visitors, along with the expanded and flatten out backyard providing a safer space for events and kids to play.
