As cliché as it sounds I want to pursue nursing to help people. I want to be able to impact and make a difference in someone's life in a positive way. There are many examples I could give about my experiences with nurses, and about how they impacted me, but I will share one specific one. When I was in fourth grade, my brother was a sophomore in high school. He was in a horrible four-wheeler accident and had to get flown to a trauma center an hour away from our house. The hospital he went to took extremely good care of him, but since he was in such bad condition only people older than 16 years old could see him the first 24 hours after he got to the hospital. While my parents took turns going up to see, different nurses came to talk to my parents and me to ask how we were doing and if we needed anything. I know at the time my parents didn’t want me to be scared, so they would ask a nurse to stay with me to go outside to cry and call our family to let them know what happened. When I was alone with any of the nurses at this time, they would talk to me to make me feel comfortable. One of the nurses even walked me down to the gift shop and let me buy a stuffed animal for my brother to give to him since I wasn’t allowed to see him yet. Once the 24 hours were over and my brother was moved to a different area of the hospital, only people 12 and older were allowed to see him. Since I was in fourth grade that meant I couldn’t see him still, but all the nurses saw how much I wanted to talk to him. So, they broke the rules so I could go see and talk to my brother. Once I saw my brother all my worries went away. Throughout this whole experience, all the nurses in the hospital provided care for my brother, my parents, and me in different ways. I thoroughly believe if the hospital didn’t have nurses like them, my family would have been a disaster and pure chaos would have happened. That is how I want to contribute to my community. Yes, I want to help patients, but it is more than just about the patients. I want to help families cope and help guide them through events. I want to provide support for my community. I want to give my community the best healthcare. I want to give my community what all those nurses at the hospital gave to my family.
