Bio

I'm a committed and creative student who hopes to work in marketing and social media for an NBA or NFL organization. I have a strong interest in using digital media to share stories, engage with fans, and use sports to unite communities. I've worked as a social media and photography intern for the Albany Firebirds for two years, during which time I've learned how important storytelling is in sports marketing and have firsthand experience managing platforms and taking pictures. These encounters have increased my motivation to work in the field and keep developing both professionally and personally. In addition to my internships, l've volunteered for years at fundraisers and community events, where I learned empathy, leadership, and cooperation. I'm determined to have a positive influence in the sports media industry as well as in my community. I just started a teaching job and I’m also very interested in going back to receive another undergrad degree but this degree will be in early childhood!

Frank and Patty Skerl Educational Scholarship for the Physically Disabled
Being a member of the disabled community has fundamentally altered my perspective on the world and on myself. I've learned the true meaning of strength, patience, and perseverance from living with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). Tumors on nerves all throughout my body are caused by NF1, which can result in issues including scoliosis, hip dysplasia, weak bones, learning impairments, eyesight issues, and chronic pain. Every day presents new difficulties, but it also serves as a reminder of my progress and my ability to overcome obstacles. When I was eighteen, tumors weakened my bones and destroyed my hip, necessitating a total hip replacement. In addition to the obvious symptoms of NF1, such as tumors and Café au lait spots, I live with discomfort every day. I was ashamed and depressed for a long time because of the things I was unable to do, particularly having to give up athletics, which I enjoyed very much. I used to find strength and freedom in sports, which served as my getaway. It was devastating to lose that aspect of my life. However, as time went on, I came to see that although NF1 altered my way of seeing the world, it did not diminish my passion for it. It just provided me with a new means of communication, both with myself and with others. My learning problems have made school challenging at times. I occasionally require additional time to comprehend lectures or do homework, and I have even questioned my skills. However, those experiences have taught me to never give up and to have patience with myself. I now know how to speak up for what I need, ask for assistance when I need it, and persevere through difficult times. Every obstacle I've encountered has taught me that perseverance, not perfection, is the key to development. Being a member of the disabled community has made me more aware of the bravery and strength of people who deal with comparable challenges. I've witnessed people use hope and determination to overcome suffering, challenges, and uncertainty. Every day I am inspired by that sense of collective endurance. It has made it clearer to me that having a disability is a sign of bravery, strength, and perseverance rather than a sign of weakness. I have a new perspective on the world. My aspirations and plans for the future have been influenced by these events. I love social media and sports marketing because they allow me to use my creativity to generate tales that unite people. As a photography and social media intern for the Albany Firebirds, I've managed to maintain a connection to the sports community that I adore. Even though I'm no longer able to play, I can still document the stories, feelings, and events that give sports their immense impact. Working for a professional team in the NFL or NBA and utilizing my voice to promote collaboration, strength, and the often-untold stories is my dream job. I've learned from being a member of the disabled community that hardship need not be a hindrance; rather, it may serve as your biggest source of inspiration. In addition to putting me to the test in ways I never would have thought possible, NF1 has made me a person who never gives up. I want to utilize my experience to encourage others to view their obstacles as opportunities to grow rather than as barriers. Even while my disease is a part of who I am, it does not define me. Rather, it has empowered me to have more ambitious dreams and the will to see those dreams through to completion.

My life has been influenced by having Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) in both difficult and motivating ways. Tumors on nerves all over the body are caused by NF1, which can result in health problems like weak bones, skeletal abnormalities, eye problems, chronic pain, and learning difficulties. My illness has presented me with many challenges, but it has also given me resilience, perseverance, and courage. Above all, it has truly inspired me to continue working toward my goals, particularly my dream of working in sports. I had ongoing academic and physical difficulties as a child with NF1. I have hip dysplasia, weak bones, and scoliosis. I also had to have a total hip replacement at the age of eighteen because of tumor damage to my hip. I have tumors and Café au lait spots all over my body, and I live with pain every day. I have learning problems that make education more challenging for me, in addition to my physical challenges. I occasionally take longer to comprehend information or maintain concentration on things that others would find easy. Though I've learnt how to adapt, there were times when I felt irritated or questioned my abilities. Regardless of how long it takes to accomplish my goals, I continue to learn, seek assistance when necessary, and never give up. My life has completely transformed since I started working as a social media and photography intern for the Albany Firebirds. By assisting in the capture of moments that bring spectators closer to the game, I get to mix my passion for sports with my artistic side. Observing the enthusiasm of fans who interact with my work serves as a reminder that, even when I'm not playing sports, I can still have an influence. One day, I hope to work for a professional NFL or NBA team, producing content that connects communities and inspires people. My goal is to pursue further education in order to build the future I've always imagined. I intend to obtain a master's degree in marketing or sports management in order to keep improving my skills and sharing my experience in a way that encourages others going through similar struggles. I've already proven to myself that perseverance and determination can transform any challenge into advancement, even though the road ahead may be challenging. I think my life has been based on bravery, resiliency, and self-belief, which makes me an excellent candidate for this scholarship. It hasn't been easy to have NF1 and a learning problem. There have been days of suffering, tiredness, and times when I questioned whether my efforts would ever be acceptable. However, every obstacle has made me stronger and more resilient. I've discovered that you can still find meaning in the struggle, even when life seems unfair. Every challenge I've encountered has inspired me to put forth more effort, have bigger dreams, and seize every chance. More than just obtaining a degree, going to college is an opportunity to demonstrate that my circumstances do not determine my future. I want to utilize my experience to encourage people going through their own struggles and to remind them that despite suffering, strength and hope are always there.

Social issues are crucial research topics because they foster critical thinking abilities and show individuals that there are several perspectives on and solutions to the same issue. I've learned a lot from personal experience. A social problem is something that hinders people from reaching their full potential in society. That, in my opinion, is assisting me in my efforts to address important social concerns. One of the most crucial things I can do to start addressing it is to volunteer, which is what I do. I believe social media is a good tool because it is one of the largest platforms for spreading the word and everyone uses it. Fundraising is another important aspect that could help distribute flyers, Qr codes, and other things that can go along with it. I personally believe these could be very helpful. Particularly in college, I've taken a lot of classes that have let me discuss societal concerns and explain what we can do to improve them, which has helped spread the message. I also follow groups that work to change social issues, express my opinion, and encourage people to think, all of which I believe are beneficial for both me and others. The most crucial thing for me to do is to openly discuss the problems that I have had or that my friends and family have faced with everyone else. To address all of these social problems and to hear other people's viewpoints, we need change. I think I can tackle and solve social problems. In addition to one or a few of us, it requires all of us to confront it. I hope I can be the one to bring about change; I want to be the one to deal with it. I will if no one else does. In conclusion, We must thus unite in order to combat them and put an end to them for the greater good. It appears that no one or very few people are working to address an important social issue because they want to see a change in the world. I believe that by doing this and contributing, I can create a chain reaction that will get people to think and contribute to resolving these social problems. To address these difficulties, more than one individual is necessary. To remedy these changes, we must all work together as one. To succeed and progress, you must go and make the necessary changes.
