Bio

I was raised with my mom and three sisters, who have all gravitated to STEM interests and careers. Math and chemistry are what I love because of their stability. I've worked around animals and small children throughout my life and have always wanted to become a veterinarian. I have worked with infants and toddlers in a daycare and they, like animals, often need advocates for their health, care, and sometimes even abuse and recovery from abuse. The thing that young children and animals have most in common is their inability to speak for themselves. I have worked with children of abuse and children who are hearing impaired and those whose families don't speak the same language as their care providers. I learned basic ASL as a child and have been able to share it with infants and toddlers and will be continuing this as I take ASL courses and have learned Spanish. My internal barometer for equity in communication ties back to the same stability I find in STEM. This need for stability developed my desire to help animals, who inherently cannot speak for themselves, but also to help their families in being able to translate and communicate in both verbal and non-verbal capacities. My long-term goal is to become a veterinarian, where I can support the health and well-being of animals as well as advocating for them when they are at their most vulnerable. For those who don't have animals, to give them positive, nurturing experiences with animals that can provide therapeutic value for their mind, body and soul, regardless of their physical, emotional or economic standing.

Utilizing critical thinking allows for better boundaries while simultaneously allowing yourself the opportunity to have your mind changed. Much of digital communication has been set to binary choices. We choose sides, friends, family and attitudes about data, based on this or that, for or against, and much less based on actual facts and the ability of them to be held up to peer review and criticism. The hidden agendas of those proclaiming facts should be carried forward, the experts should have credentials supporting their claims of expertise, and results of the facts should be repeatable. Being able to understand what makes data factual is a commodity that should be valued and respected as much as intellect itself. The STEM community has long-since held this standard and it has been crucial in ensuring that the direction we go in finding answers as well as advancing research is valid and sustainable. As such, those who are able to think critically, know when the data, study design, authors, deviations, study design, and biases are taken into consideration, that there can be potential problems with all research. In light of that, critical thinkers also know that these potential problems allow us to be open to new ideas, new data, new points of view. What's fantastic about this is that critical thinkers can objectively look at stated facts, determine whether they are potentially accurate or not, and then make adjustments to their own logic, accordingly. The ability to set your ego aside and learn something new that may contradict your own beliefs is important in individual and societal growth while setting clear boundaries about what is accepted as fact. We should be raising critical thinkers to challenge or uphold everything in our individual lives to keep us all safe from misinformation.
