NomineeBio
My name is Mya McCue, and I am currently a senior at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. I am studying global cybersecurity with a minor in Spanish. My goal is to become a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and to protect an organization's internal computer network from threats such as malware, phishing, password attacks, and other intrusions.
Currently, I am an officer of my university's Cybersecurity Club and a member of the International Studies Club, Criminology Club, and Campus Initiatives. I love dance, especially ballet, and I am on my college dance team. I am very passionate about everything that I do and try to give it my all.
During the summers, I have been working as a lifeguard at my neighborhood pool. I have also been interning at a few different companies, where I have learned so much about each company and gained an appreciation for what each company does. During the school year, I work as a student worker at my university’s police station as a parking enforcement worker.

Adoptee Scholarship
Since I was so young to remember, I cannot recall any of my time in China. I was adopted when I was ten months old from a southern city in China. My parents tell me that I was found by the police when I was around a day old outside of a factory and taken to an orphanage where I lived for the next seven months. I was then taken to my next home with a loving and caring foster family for my last three months in China. My parents flew to China and stayed for about a week and met my foster family and toured the orphanage where I stayed. We then set off to the US, my new home, my fourth home.
I have rarely felt different from others due to my adoption. My sister is also adopted, although from Texas, and there never seems to be a time when I feel different at home. My parents have always encouraged me and my sister to ask questions and learn about our backgrounds, so I thought it was normal to talk about adoption and this sort of thing. However, when I meet new people and I talk about my adoption their reactions are always ones of shock, interest, and oftentimes sadness. I can sense that they feel bad for asking me about it when they hear my story. I tell them that I do not mind talking about it since it is in the past, but it still hurts me to see others taken aback by my early life. I know there are others who have similar adoption stories but where I live I have yet to find someone with a similar background.
I do not know my true birthday or who my birth parents are. Sometimes I wonder about those things: Who are my birth parents? What were they like? What would it have been like to live in China instead? Sometimes my sister talks to her birth family and I get a little jealous. Sometimes I wish I could talk to someone from my past too. I am always grateful for my life and the opportunities and privilege's I have had but those questions are always lingering in my mind. I am not sure if I will ever know my birthparents but I would like to try to find them when I am older. I also want to travel to China to experience the culture and the country I am from.
