Jessica Dahl Nurses with Chutzpah Scholarship
Since I was young, nursing has been a constant thread in my life. My mother has been a nurse for over 15 years, and I grew up listening to her stories after long shifts—stories not only about challenges, but also about the profound impact she was able to make on her patients’ lives. She spoke about the relief she could bring to someone in pain, the comfort she could offer to families, and the satisfaction of knowing she had done everything possible to help. Watching her, I realized that nursing was not just a profession, but a calling. Seeing the way her work gave her purpose inspired me to pursue the same path, and I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to caring for others the way she has for so many years. My faith has been an equally strong influence in this decision. Growing up Jewish, I was taught the importance of tikkun olam—repairing the world through acts of kindness and responsibility. That value has stayed with me my entire life. From attending synagogue regularly, to spending summers in Israel with my father’s family and grandparents, I developed a deep connection to both my faith and my heritage. Judaism emphasizes compassion, resilience, and the obligation to stand up for others. These teachings have guided me and strengthened my decision to become a nurse. To me, nursing is a direct expression of my faith: it is about serving others, alleviating suffering, and bringing healing where it is most needed. At 25 years old, I am just beginning my journey as a nursing student at North Carolina Wesleyan University. Getting here has not been easy, but my determination has only grown stronger. Higher education is a major investment, and self-doubt sometimes creeps in, especially when faced with long nights of studying or the financial challenges of school. But I remind myself of my mother’s example and the values my faith has instilled in me. Courage—chutzpah—is what pushes me forward. It takes nerve to walk into a profession as demanding as nursing, but it also takes heart. I believe that nurses are the backbone of healthcare. They are advocates for their patients, the ones who speak up when something is wrong, and the ones who remain steady in moments of crisis. I aspire to be that kind of nurse—level-headed, compassionate, and unafraid to take initiative. My ambition is to build a career where I can make a difference every day, whether it is through easing someone’s pain, educating families, or simply being a source of strength during a difficult time. My journey as both a Jewish woman and a nursing student has shaped me into someone who is driven, empathetic, and committed to making a positive impact. I see nursing as more than a job—it is a way to live out my values and honor the example set by my mother. With ambition, drive, and the foundation of my faith, I am ready to devote myself fully to this path.
