The loudest silence I have ever experienced wasn’t in an empty room; it was in a crowded American classroom. Three years ago, as a new immigrant from Afghanistan, I sat in my classroom, unable to find the English words to ask my teacher for water. In that moment I felt invisible. Back in my home country, I was a top student, but here, I just sat, put my head on the desk, and regretted why we moved here. Most of the time it even made me cry because I felt lost, unable to do a simple worksheet, which felt very disappointing and overwhelming. My identity is founded on the Afghan principles of Khedmat (service to others) and on the resilience of family, which sacrificed everything for safety and education. Moving to the U.S. was a leap of faith undertaken by my parents to ensure that we were safe and had the right to an education—a right that is now a struggle for many in Afghanistan. Growing up in a low-income family, I have witnessed the sacrifices made to fill the gap between our past in Afghanistan and our future in America. To carry the strength of the Afghan diaspora is to know that I do not only study for myself but also for the family. However, living and studying in a completely new cultural environment has taught me that communication is not just about the language, but it is also about courage. Being an immigrant student has required me to walk in the "in-between" space of my Afghan heritage and the American educational system. But the most important lesson I learned was the power of vulnerability. By asking for help and attending after-school tutoring, not only did I learn a new language, but I also learned how to build a bridge between two worlds. This journey from my "F's and C's" to my "A's and B's" led me to become a member of the honor society and receive rewards and academic recognition for academic achievements. Through this journey, I develop a new perspective toward failure. I used to believe that failure meant weakness, but now I know it is a necessity for success. The most important lesson I learned was that my voice has power even when it is not fully developed. This is why I took on social work and volunteering as an online ESL tutor, because I don't want anyone to face the same experience that I once had to. My perspective has changed from just focusing on my survival to focusing on our success as a group. My personal aspiration is to become a dermatologist. This aspiration is closely related to my community. In many immigrant and refugee communities, skin health is often neglected or inaccessible due to a lack of culturally sensitive care or the unaffordability of specialized care. My aspiration is to bring medical expertise that takes into account the unique needs of people of different skin tones and serve people who are unable to access healthcare due to financial difficulties. Receiving this scholarship will be transformative for my current situation with my future aspirations. As a student from a low-income family, I don't have any financial support that will cover my college expenses. However, if I receive this support, it will help me with expenses; tuition, textbooks, and transportation are major obstacles. It will enable me to concentrate solely on my pre-med course without the worry of financial survival. I hope to receive the scholarship so I can give back to my community by helping others and making a meaningful difference in their lives.

I remember sitting in my classroom not even knowing a simple word in English. It was very disappointing for me. I did not understand the language, the lesson, or the conversations around me. I felt very lost and out of place. The feeling of not belonging there was sad and overwhelming. These experiences were difficult, but motivated me to work hard, become a top student, and never give up on achieving my goals. Almost three years ago, my parents moved to the United States so my siblings and I could have great educational opportunities and a better future. This move changed my life, as I had to start over in a new country and school system. The most difficult challenge I faced was the language barrier. I struggled to understand the lessons in school and communicate with teachers and classmates, which felt overwhelming. I felt as if I could never be a top student like I used to be in my home country. I would sit in class, sometimes put my head down on the table, regretting why we moved and wishing to escape the difficult reality. Most of the time it even made me cry because I couldn't take it anymore and felt completely lost. Over time, I made the decision to accept the new life and take responsibility for my future. I thought about the difficulties my parents faced to move here so we could have better opportunities and an education. This motivated me to start practicing on my own every day, attend after school tutoring, ask my teacher for extra help, and try to communicate with my classmates even though I freaked making mistakes. After a while, things began to change. My grades improved from F's and C's to mostly A's and B's. I earned a certificate for attending a school program, received a reward for academic achievements, another certificate for being an honor student, and became a member of the Honor Society. Outside the classroom, I continued to develop leadership through school involvement. I joined clubs, participated in school activities including Culture Day, lunch activities, clubs, and after school events. These experiences allowed me to connect with other students, understand academic challenges, and strengthen my team work and communication. Also my responsibilities outside of school had an important impact on me. As an English learner, I understand how difficult it can be to feel out of place in a new environment, which motivated me to volunteer as an online ESL tutor, where I help students practice English and support them academically. In addition to volunteering, I’ve always tried to be a responsible and supportive member of my family. Balancing school, volunteering, and family responsibilities. The challenges I faced strengthened my resilience and determination to succeed. These experiences shaped me into a hardworking and determined person. It taught me to never give up until I achieve my goals. I have achieved meaningful victories: I earned higher grades, improved my communication skills, and achieved more than I thought possible. I realized that failure is a part of success and it might not come without failing. Every challenge has shown me that with hard work, dedication, and effort, I can turn obstacles into opportunities and create a meaningful future for myself while helping others. Starting college will be my first step toward achieving my goals and a better future. I want to graduate from college, build a career, and support my family because they have been facing many difficulties and financial challenges. I also want to give back to my community by becoming a doctor and helping people with their health. Receiving this scholarship will not only help me achieve my goals but will also allow me to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I am determined to go to college; however, my family has very limited financial resources. My parents did not have opportunities to complete their education because of wars in our home country, Afghanistan. Since it's not been a very long time since we moved here, they are still learning English. Because of their language barrier, they are not yet able to work and support my college expenses. I also do not have any savings or a family member who will support me with my college costs. Without financial support, continuing my education after high school may not be possible. Not having financial support is overwhelming, and worrying about them will make it difficult to focus on my future. Receiving this scholarship will help me to focus on my college and studies without worrying constantly about money. Also it will help me become more independent and give me the opportunities to support myself through part-time work while attending college. This scholarship will help me feel secure when I first start college and it will allow me to continue my education. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship and I hope to receive it. This support will mean a lot to me. It will help overcome the financial struggles, fulfill my dreams, and honor my parents' sacrifices in moving to the United States. Most importantly, it will help me take the first step toward achieving my dreams and creating a better future for myself.
