My name is Munachimso Agbasi a student of CUNY Medgar Evers College,Brooklyn,New York. I migrated to the United States at the age of 17 from Nigeria, a country in the western part of Africa. I came with my parents but they could not stay because they are getting old. My parents intentions was to make sure I had a comfortable life and I would not lack anything. My parents had no idea whatsoever what I would go through as an immigrant even though I stayed with my uncle. They told me to be strong and hopefully that things would only get better. Immigrants ,they said can make it anywhere in the world and I am certain that I would. My family struggles and work hard back home to make sure I pay my tuition since I pay out of pocket and cannot get any financial assistance from the government. My parents hard work does not only make me work hard it makes me want to succeed and make my parents proud. Being an undocumented immigrant means you do not get benefits , I have to depend on my parents and uncle for finance . At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to go to college after high school because I didn’t know where the money for my tuition would come from. My parents promised to go as far as taking loans from family and friends to make sure I go to college and become a registered nurse which is my dream. Along the way it felt like my dream was cut off. Months of studying to take my nursing exam I found out I am not eligible to take the exam to be in the program because I am undocumented and I cried but my parents assured me that it wasn’t the end of the world. My mom said, “ Destiny can be delayed but can never be denied”. I believe that no matter what I would achieve this dream. As a child, my dad did not complete his education because his parents could not afford it. He was sent out to trade school and while working he had to fend for his entire family. Because of what my dad went through he vowed that non of his children will have to suffer in the country, coupled with the bad things that were happening. With my parents bringing me up to the United States, they have not only changed my life they have used me to open doors of opportunities for my family and generations to come. My family to me is everything I have and I would continue to work hard to make my parents happy. Since I cannot afford to buy anything for my parents at the end of every semester I send them my results to put a smile on their faces and to show them that I would never give up . My parents have given me the world and I would cherish it forever. Even though I can’t study nursing at the moment I am pursuing to get a bachelors in biology and by the time I become a permanent resident I would apply to nursing schools and go back to school to pursue my nursing degree. I want to one day look back at and smile and be proud that I made it. And when that day comes I would be able to help the world by reaching out to people back home who have nothing. I believe that I would succeed and I would be able to reunite with my family again.
