Black people in STEM is an interesting topic within the African American community. In the past, it was very rare for an African American to be apart of the STEM community due to the overbearing social constructs built against them. However, it is due to trailblazers, such as Mae Jemison and George Washington Carver, that made it possible to have the career path of STEM available. Another reason pertaining to the rarity of Black people in STEM was due to stereotypes that were birthed from social constructs, such as being animalistic and barbaric. Having these prejudices against the community did not only regress the progress of their development, but it also made them appear incapable of adapting to their surroundings. As for me, my name is Jonathan Davis, and I am from Baltimore City, Maryland, more specifically Northeast Baltimore. I come from a big family with little support, with only my mother and other select few family members. I attended Concordia Preparatory School in Towson, MD (formerly known as Baltimore Lutheran School) for middle and high-school, and I am now attending college as a Sophomore at Mount St. Mary's University. My current major is Health Sciences with a concentration in Pre-Physical Therapy along with a minor in Spanish. Even though this is my major now, this was not my initial choice. During my first semester of my senior year in high-school, I had decided that my major would be Fine Arts with a concentration in Illustration, along with a minor in Spanish. I have always (and still do!) had a fascination with creating works of art because of the process of producing something from scratch. I also was inspired through different forms of media, such as social media and anime, and would always try to imitate what I would observe from the media. However, one day I decided to have a conservation with my mother regarding her job, which was an ER nurse, because I have never spoke with her about this. I had asked her "Why does she like being nurse, especially in the ER?". Her response was something I did not expect from her at the time, but she basically explained that helping people was something she was very keen on doing because of the reactions she receives afterwards. My mother chose the path of STEM due to her opportunity to help others in need and to produce positive attitudes within her workforce and within her range of patients. This had really stuck with me through the remainder of senior year, and I had eventually switched my major from Fine Arts to Physical Therapy. With my future STEM degree being in Health Sciences, I plan on changing the narrative against the Black community through offering my services to them. During this pandemic of COVID -19, it is very evident that African Americans have been treated disproportionately due to the color of their skin. I believe that if I use my degree in order to become a certified doctor of Physical Therapy, than I can operate as an instrument of aiding the betterment of my community.
