My experience with sepsis comes through my dad, who developed sepsis and came frighteningly close to losing his life. Before experiencing it through someone I love, I do not think I fully understood how quickly sepsis could become life-threatening or how surviving it does not necessarily mean everything simply returns to normal afterward. My dad survived, which I am incredibly grateful for, but his health has continued to require significant support. Sepsis became more than one terrifying medical emergency for our family. Its effects became part of our everyday lives. One of the hardest parts has been balancing the different roles I have in my family. I am my dad's daughter, but there are times when that relationship also involves helping care for him, keeping track of what is happening with his health, advocating when necessary, and simply being available when he needs support. At the same time, I am a mother with a young daughter who depends on me. I also manage my own chronic health challenges. Being a parent while helping care for a parent can sometimes feel like standing in the middle of two generations that both need something from you. Throughout much of this, I was also pursuing my education. I am a first-generation college graduate and earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions before recently completing my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. There were times when assignments and deadlines existed alongside doctor's appointments, family concerns, parenting responsibilities, and the uncertainty surrounding my dad's health. School did not stop because something difficult was happening at home, and my responsibilities at home did not stop because I had schoolwork to finish. As difficult as that has been, my experiences have also influenced the direction I want to take with my education. During graduate school, I became increasingly interested in healthcare applications of artificial intelligence and in making complicated medical information more accessible. When someone you love becomes seriously ill, you suddenly find yourself trying to understand terminology, test results, risks, medications, and decisions that you may have known nothing about days earlier. I know how overwhelming that can feel. That experience is one reason I care so much about human-centered healthcare technology. I want to contribute to AI systems that help people understand information, identify meaningful patterns, and communicate more effectively with healthcare professionals without pretending technology can replace medical care or human compassion. Sepsis nearly took my dad from me. I will always be grateful that it did not, but I also understand now that survival can be the beginning of another difficult journey. Watching my dad continue to live with serious health challenges has taught me a great deal about resilience, caregiving, and how much families carry behind the scenes. Most importantly, it has given greater purpose to what I want to do next. I cannot change what happened to my dad, but I can allow the experience to shape the kind of person, daughter, mother, and technology professional I become. I hope to use my education to make healthcare information and technology a little more understandable and supportive for families facing frightening situations of their own.

My contribution to women's empowerment has largely come through showing other women that there is no single correct way to build a career or pursue an education. I moved out at 17, started my own business at 18, and eventually became a wife and mother before completing much of my higher education. I am also a first-generation college graduate. My path has never looked particularly traditional, and for a long time I thought that meant I was behind. Instead, I have learned that there is a lot of power in showing another woman that she does not have to wait for the perfect circumstances to begin. I went on to earn my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Every time I share that journey with another woman who is considering returning to school, changing careers, or entering technology, I hope it makes that possibility feel a little more realistic. Women's empowerment is especially important to me within technology. There are still times when women enter technical spaces and feel pressure to prove that they belong there before they have even had the opportunity to learn. I have experienced the uncertainty of entering a field where I did not fit the stereotypical image of the person people imagine working in cloud computing or artificial intelligence. Instead of allowing that feeling to push me away, I kept learning, earning certifications, building projects, and becoming more confident in what I could contribute. I try to carry that experience into my interactions with other women by sharing what I know, answering questions without judgment, and encouraging people who are interested in technology but may think they are not “technical enough.” No one begins as an expert, and sometimes empowerment starts with simply having another person tell you that you are capable of learning. Becoming a mother has made this even more meaningful to me. My daughter has grown up watching me attend school, work on projects, debug code, get frustrated, try again, and eventually graduate. She is still young, but I love knowing that her earliest understanding of technology includes seeing her mom working in artificial intelligence. I want her to grow up without ever questioning whether science, technology, business, or leadership are spaces where women belong. I also want her to see that becoming a mother does not mean a woman has to stop having ambitions of her own. Motherhood changed my goals, but it did not erase them. If anything, it gave me another reason to keep pursuing them. Going forward, I want my impact on women's empowerment to grow alongside my career. I hope to work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, healthcare, education, and ethics while continuing to encourage women and girls to explore STEM. I especially want to reach women who may feel overlooked by the traditional image of a technology professional: mothers, first-generation students, career changers, and women who simply discovered their interests later in life. I do not believe empowerment always requires a huge platform. It can happen through mentorship, sharing opportunities, teaching someone a skill, or being visible in a space where another woman is wondering whether she belongs. I want to continue building my own future while making it easier for other women to imagine building theirs.

I love math because it has a way of turning something that initially looks impossible into something you can actually solve. I have always enjoyed that moment when a problem finally clicks and something that looked like a mess of numbers suddenly makes sense. My appreciation for math grew even more when I started working in technology. I earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, where math stopped feeling like something that existed only in a textbook. Statistics, probability, linear algebra, and other mathematical concepts became the foundation for things I was actually building. Artificial intelligence especially changed the way I look at math. A machine learning model can seem almost magical from the outside, but underneath it are numbers, probabilities, patterns, and calculations. During my master's program, I worked with real datasets, trained machine learning models, evaluated their performance, and had to understand what the results actually meant. Suddenly, concepts like accuracy, probability, correlation, and statistical evaluation had a real purpose. I also love that math does not always reward getting something right immediately. Sometimes you start with the wrong approach, realize something does not add up, and work backward until you find the problem. I think that process has taught me to be more comfortable with being wrong while I am learning. A wrong answer is not necessarily failure; sometimes it is information that gets you closer to the right one. That mindset carries over into almost everything I do. Whether I am debugging code, working with an AI model, managing a budget, or solving an everyday problem, I tend to break things into smaller pieces and work through them logically. For me, math is less about memorizing formulas and more about understanding patterns. It gives us a way to take complicated questions and make them measurable, testable, and sometimes solvable. That ability to make sense of complexity is exactly what drew me toward technology and artificial intelligence, and it is why math continues to be such an important part of what I want to do in the future.

Mental health is important to me as a student because I have learned that academic success and personal well-being cannot really be separated. You can be doing well on paper while still feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or completely exhausted. Being a good student does not automatically mean you are doing well mentally, and I think that distinction is important. My educational journey has been somewhat unconventional. I am a first-generation college graduate, and I pursued my education while also balancing work, marriage, motherhood, and the normal responsibilities of adult life. I eventually earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. I am incredibly proud of those accomplishments, but getting there also taught me how easy it is to put pressure on yourself to constantly be productive. There were plenty of times when an assignment needed to be completed, something at home needed my attention, and I felt like there simply were not enough hours in the day. I had to learn that taking care of myself was not time being taken away from my goals. Sometimes stepping away, resting, or admitting that I was overwhelmed actually made it possible to come back and do better. My biggest form of mental health advocacy happens at home. I have a young daughter, and I want her to grow up in an environment where talking about emotions is normal. I do not want her to believe that being strong means pretending she is fine all the time. We talk about feelings, give ourselves space to have difficult days, and try not to treat sadness, frustration, or anxiety as emotions that need to be hidden. I also try to advocate through the way I treat other people. Mental health struggles are not always visible. Someone can be successful, social, and productive while privately having an incredibly difficult time. Because of that, I try to listen before judging and give people room to be honest about how they are doing. My interest in mental health has even crossed into my education. During my master's program, I developed a mental health-focused AI project that explored how retrieval-based artificial intelligence could provide more useful and responsible educational information. Working on that project reinforced my belief that technology can improve access to information and resources, but it should never pretend to replace genuine human connection or appropriate professional support. As I continue my career in artificial intelligence, I want to keep advocating for responsible, human-centered technology, particularly when systems interact with people who may be vulnerable. Mental health should never be treated as simply another dataset or technical problem to solve. For me, mental health advocacy does not always mean organizing a major campaign. Sometimes it is creating a home where someone can say they are struggling without embarrassment. Sometimes it is checking on someone, listening without immediately trying to fix everything, or designing technology with empathy. My education has taught me a tremendous amount about artificial intelligence, but balancing that education with real life has taught me something equally valuable: achievement means much less if we do not take care of the people behind it.

Living with hip dysplasia has changed the way I look at disability because, from the outside, someone may not immediately realize that anything is different about me. I have learned firsthand that a physical condition does not have to be obvious to affect how someone moves through the world. Hip dysplasia can make things that seem completely ordinary to someone else much more difficult. Sitting for extended periods, standing, walking certain distances, or simply finding a comfortable position can require more thought than people realize. Some days are easier than others, which has also taught me that physical limitations are not always consistent. Having a good day does not mean the condition suddenly disappeared. One of the biggest ways this experience has changed me is that I am much less likely to make assumptions about what another person is capable of based on appearance. Someone can look perfectly healthy and still be dealing with pain or physical limitations that affect nearly every decision they make throughout the day. You simply do not know what another person is managing privately. It has also made me think much more seriously about accessibility. My educational background is in technology. I earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Throughout my graduate education, I became especially interested in human-centered technology, healthcare, and AI ethics. Living with a condition that affects my own mobility has given those interests an additional meaning. Technology is often designed around an “average” user, but real people are not average. We have different physical abilities, different limitations, and different ways of interacting with the world. As I continue my career in artificial intelligence, I want to remember the person who may interact with something differently than its developer expected. I am particularly interested in using AI in healthcare, education, and accessibility. I want to contribute to technology that removes barriers rather than creating additional ones. That may mean designing systems that require fewer unnecessary physical interactions, making important information easier to access remotely, or simply including people with disabilities in conversations about how technology should work. Hip dysplasia has also taught me adaptability. I cannot always control whether something will hurt or whether I will have to approach an activity differently, but I can control how I respond and continue working toward my goals. Being part of the disabled community has shown me that accessibility is not about giving someone an advantage. It is about recognizing that people begin from different circumstances and giving them a genuine opportunity to participate. I want to carry that understanding into whatever I build next. My disability is only one part of who I am, but the perspective it has given me will continue influencing the kind of technologist, advocate, and person I hope to become.

One of the most challenging parts of being both a student and a parent is that neither role really has an “off” switch. An assignment may be due at midnight, but your child still needs dinner, a bath, attention, and someone to read one more story before bed. There were many nights during my education when my school day did not really begin until my daughter was settled for the evening. My path to higher education was already unconventional before I became a parent. I moved out at 17, started my own business at 18, and spent much of my early adulthood working and building a life for myself. I am also a first-generation college student, which meant there was no established roadmap in my family for navigating higher education. I had to learn a lot of it as I went. Motherhood added an entirely new dimension to that journey. Suddenly, every decision about school also had to make sense for my family. Time became one of my most valuable resources. Studying for an exam could mean giving up the little bit of quiet time I had at the end of the day. Working on a major project sometimes meant squeezing pieces of it into nap times, evenings, and any other opening I could find. There was also the financial side of continuing my education. Tuition and educational expenses do not exist in isolation when you are raising a child. Every dollar has competing priorities, from groceries and household bills to activities, clothing, and the unexpected expenses that naturally come with having a family. Continuing school meant believing that the sacrifices we made in the present would create more opportunities in the future. That belief kept me going. I eventually earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Becoming the first person in my family to graduate from college was already something I once struggled to imagine. Completing graduate school while raising my daughter made that accomplishment mean even more to me. My daughter has also become one of the biggest reasons I continue setting new goals. She has seen school as a normal part of our household. She has watched me sit at a computer working on assignments, build projects, get frustrated when something did not work, try again, and eventually graduate. She may be too young to understand exactly what a master's degree means, but she understands that her mom worked very hard for something and finished it. That is an example I hope stays with her. My goal now is to build a career in artificial intelligence focused on meaningful, human-centered applications of technology. I am particularly interested in healthcare, education, accessibility, and AI ethics. During graduate school, I built projects exploring how AI could make complicated information easier for ordinary people to understand, and I want to continue that work. A scholarship would help me move toward those goals while reducing the financial pressure that education places on a family. Financial support creates breathing room. It means being able to invest in education and professional development without every opportunity competing as heavily with the needs of my household and my child. More importantly, investing in my education is also an investment in my daughter's future. I want to create greater stability for her, but I also want to give her something that cannot be measured financially: an example. I want her to grow up believing that becoming a parent does not mean giving up the other parts of yourself. Goals may take longer. The path may become messier. You may complete assignments after bedtime or study while toys are scattered around you, but you can keep building toward something. Being a student while raising a child has been exhausting at times, but it has also given my education a much deeper purpose. I am no longer building a future only for myself. Every step forward changes what is possible for the little person watching me take it.

I went from having no one in my family who could explain how college worked to becoming the first person in my family to graduate and then continuing all the way through a master's degree. My daughter has been one of my biggest motivations throughout that journey. She has watched me study, work on projects, get frustrated, figure things out, and eventually graduate. I love knowing that her understanding of what is possible will be different because of what she watched me accomplish. My next goal is to continue building a career in artificial intelligence, particularly in areas involving healthcare, education, and ethical technology. I want to create AI that solves real problems and makes complicated information more accessible to ordinary people. Eventually, I would also love to continue my education even further. This scholarship would help relieve some of the financial weight that comes with pursuing higher education while raising a family. It would allow me to focus more of my resources on continuing to develop my skills and pursuing the opportunities that will move me toward my long-term goals. Being first-generation has meant figuring out a lot as I go, but that has also become one of my greatest strengths. I have learned not to wait until I know exactly what I am doing before I start. I start, I learn, and I keep going. That is how I made it this far, and it is how I plan to build whatever comes next.

Being raised in part by a guardian or grandparent had a significant influence on the person I became, even though I probably did not fully understand that influence when I was younger. Growing up in a family situation that looked different from what was considered “traditional” taught me early that families do not all have to look the same to provide love, stability, and support. It also made me independent at a fairly young age. I learned that sometimes life does not follow the path you expect, and you have to learn how to adapt to the circumstances you are given. Looking back, I think a lot of the confidence I had to take those steps came from learning early in life how to adjust, figure things out, and keep moving forward. They may not understand every adult circumstance happening around them, but they remember who showed up, who encouraged them, and who made them feel secure. I want my daughter to grow up knowing that she has people firmly in her corner. Professionally, my experiences have made me want to use my education to create opportunities and make complicated things more accessible to others. My work in artificial intelligence has especially drawn me toward healthcare, education, and ethical technology. I want to build tools that solve real problems and help people who may not have access to the same knowledge or resources as someone else. My upbringing taught me that where you begin does not have to determine where you end up. Sometimes the people who step in and help raise us become an important part of the reason we are able to imagine something more for ourselves. As I build my own future, I carry that lesson with me. I hope to create stability for my family, continue growing professionally, and eventually be able to provide the same kind of encouragement and opportunity to someone else that helped me continue moving forward.

When I think about contributing to my community, I do not immediately think about one organization or a certain number of volunteer hours. For me, community has always been about the smaller ways people help one another: sharing what you know, helping someone solve a problem, supporting a small business, or simply being the person willing to step in when someone needs help. I started my own business when I was 18, and that experience introduced me to many other small business owners and people trying to build something for themselves. Over the years, I have helped businesses with technology, administrative work, websites, customer support, automation, and other problems that can be surprisingly overwhelming when someone is trying to manage everything on their own. I have always enjoyed being able to take something that feels complicated to another person and say, essentially, “I can help you figure this out.” That same idea eventually followed me into my education. I became the first person in my family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completing my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Because I had to navigate much of higher education myself, I have become someone who is happy to share what I learned along the way. Whether it is talking about college options, technology careers, certifications, or simply encouraging someone who does not think they belong in a technical field, I believe knowledge becomes much more valuable when you are willing to share it. Technology has also given me new ways to think about service. During graduate school, I became especially interested in making complicated information more accessible. For my master's capstone, I built NeuroGuide AI, an educational tool focused on Alzheimer's disease and genetic risk. The project was designed around a simple idea: people should not need a technical or medical background to begin understanding information that may be important to them or their families. Becoming a mother has made community even more important to me. I want my daughter to grow up understanding that being part of a community means contributing to it. That does not always require a huge gesture. Sometimes it means helping a neighbor, supporting a local business, sharing a skill, giving someone useful information, or noticing when another person needs a hand. As I move into the next stage of my career, I want to continue using my background in technology and artificial intelligence in that same spirit. I hope to help small organizations and individuals benefit from technologies that can otherwise feel inaccessible or expensive. I am especially interested in applications involving healthcare, education, and accessibility, where making information easier to understand can have a real impact on someone's life. My community has taught me that service does not have to be complicated. You start with what you know, pay attention to what people around you need, and help where you can. As my education and skills have grown, so has my ability to contribute, and I hope that continues throughout my career.

You can care about someone deeply, want something different for them, and still have very little control over the decisions they make. Learning the difference between supporting someone and trying to carry their struggles for them has been difficult, but important. These experiences have also made me much less likely to judge someone based solely on what I see. Mental illness does not always look the way people expect it to. You can appear completely fine to everyone around you while internally dealing with something they know nothing about. Understanding that has made me much more compassionate toward other people. Motherhood especially changed the way I think about mental health. I have a young daughter, and I do not want her growing up believing that difficult emotions are weaknesses she needs to hide. I want her to know that she can talk about how she feels, ask for help when she needs it, and have bad days without believing something is wrong with her. I also want her to see that taking care of your mental health is simply part of taking care of yourself. My experiences have even influenced the kind of work I am interested in pursuing. During my master's program, I worked on an AI project involving mental health information. It forced me to think carefully about what responsible technology looks like when the person using it may be struggling or vulnerable. Technology can make information and resources easier to access, but it cannot replace empathy, human connection, or professional support. That distinction became very important to me. Mental health has ultimately taught me to give people more grace. Someone can be successful and struggling at the same time. Someone who seems distant may simply be having a difficult day. A person can be surrounded by people who love them and still feel alone. I cannot always know what someone else is experiencing, but I can control how I respond to them. I can listen, avoid unnecessary judgment, and make it easier for the people in my life to be honest about how they are doing. That may seem like a small impact, but I have learned that sometimes simply knowing you do not have to pretend around someone can mean more than we realize.

My experience with mental health has probably shaped me most by teaching me that you never really know what someone else is carrying. People can be successful, productive, funny, raising families, working, going to school, and accomplishing things while also having days where things feel much heavier than anyone around them realizes. Understanding that has made me a much more empathetic person. I have also learned that mental health is not always a straight line between struggling and being “better.” Sometimes it is simply learning yourself well enough to recognize when you need to slow down, change something, ask for support, or give yourself a little more patience. There have been periods in my life where I have felt overwhelmed, uncertain, or anxious about things I could not completely control. I used to think strength meant pushing through everything without letting it affect me. As I have gotten older, I have realized that strength can also mean acknowledging when something is difficult and still choosing to move forward. That perspective has influenced my relationships tremendously. I try to give people more grace than I once did because I understand that someone's worst day is not necessarily an accurate representation of who they are. It has also made me value the people in my life who allow me to be completely myself without feeling like I always need to have everything together. Becoming a mom changed my perspective even more. I want my daughter to grow up in a home where emotions are something we can talk about instead of something we have to hide. I want her to know that asking for help is normal, that having a difficult day does not mean she has failed, and that taking care of herself matters just as much as achieving something. My experiences have also shaped my educational and professional goals. I recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, and throughout graduate school I became especially interested in the human side of technology. One of my projects involved building a mental health-focused retrieval-augmented AI system designed to provide more useful and responsible educational information. That experience made me think deeply about both the possibilities and limitations of technology when people are vulnerable. AI can help make information and resources more accessible, but empathy, human connection, and responsible design cannot be treated as an afterthought. Ultimately, my experience with mental health has changed the way I define success. I am proud of my education and the things I have accomplished, but I do not want my life to be measured entirely by degrees, careers, or productivity. I want to build a good life, be present for my family, continue learning, create things that help people, and be someone others feel comfortable being themselves around. Most importantly, I have learned that people are complicated. We can be grateful and overwhelmed, confident and uncertain, successful and struggling at the same time. Recognizing that has made me more patient with myself and much less quick to judge others. I think that understanding will continue influencing the kind of mother, partner, friend, and professional I hope to be.

ALS has impacted aspects of my life in ways that have made me much more aware of how quickly a serious neurological condition can change life not only for the person affected, but for everyone around them. Seeing the effects of a disease with so much uncertainty has stayed with me and has influenced the way I think about healthcare, technology, and the kind of work I want to contribute to in the future. My educational journey eventually led me into artificial intelligence, although it was not a traditional path. I moved out at 17, started my own business at 18, and later became a wife and mother while continuing my education. I am a first-generation college graduate, earning my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completing my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Getting through school while balancing family, work, and financial responsibilities has required a lot of persistence. My experiences with serious neurological conditions have also influenced the direction I have taken within AI. During graduate school, I became particularly interested in healthcare, AI ethics, and making complicated medical information more accessible. For my master's capstone, I created NeuroGuide AI, an educational AI system focused on Alzheimer's disease and genetic risk. While ALS and Alzheimer's are very different diseases, both have reinforced my interest in neurological health and in the families who suddenly find themselves trying to understand incredibly complicated information. One of the things I learned while developing NeuroGuide AI was how overwhelming medical and scientific information can become when it suddenly matters personally. That is where I believe my education can make a difference. I want to continue exploring ways AI can responsibly help people understand health information, access trustworthy resources, and feel better prepared to communicate with healthcare professionals. This scholarship would help me continue building on the education I have worked extremely hard to obtain. As a mother and first-generation college graduate, pursuing higher education has meant balancing tuition and educational expenses with the normal financial responsibilities of raising a family. Reducing that financial burden would give me greater freedom to continue developing my skills and pursuing healthcare-focused AI projects rather than allowing financial limitations to determine what opportunities I can pursue. My involvement with the ALS community has been more personal than organizational. I have not had a formal position with an ALS charity, and I would rather be transparent about that than overstate my involvement. However, my experiences have given me a genuine appreciation for organizations that support individuals with ALS, their caregivers, and their families. Ultimately, I want the experiences that have affected my life to influence what I build next. My goal is to use my background in artificial intelligence to contribute to technology that is ethical, understandable, and centered around real people. If the work I do can eventually make even one part of navigating a devastating neurological condition easier for another person or family, that would be an impact worth making.

My chosen field is artificial intelligence, and one of the areas I am most interested in is how AI can be used to make healthcare information and technology more accessible to everyday people. For individuals living with chronic autoimmune conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, managing health is not something that happens only during a doctor's appointment. It is something they have to think about every day, often for the rest of their lives. I believe technology has an opportunity to make some of that burden a little easier. I recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, where I became particularly interested in healthcare AI, ethics, and human-centered technology. For my capstone project, I developed NeuroGuide AI, an educational AI system focused on Alzheimer's disease and APOE genetic risk. One of my main goals with the project was taking information that can be complicated, technical, and sometimes frightening and presenting it in a way that an everyday person could better understand. Although Alzheimer's disease and Type 1 diabetes are very different conditions, that experience shaped the way I think about using AI to support people managing chronic health conditions. Someone should not need a medical degree to understand information about their own health. In the future, I would like to help develop AI tools that support people with chronic autoimmune conditions by making health information easier to understand and interact with. For someone with diabetes, that could mean technology that helps identify patterns in glucose readings, activity, meals, sleep, or other information and presents those patterns in a useful and understandable way. AI could also help patients organize questions for appointments, understand terminology, or find reliable educational resources without having to sort through an overwhelming amount of information online. At the same time, I believe healthcare is an area where AI needs to be developed very carefully. These systems should support patients and healthcare professionals rather than pretend to replace medical care. Privacy, accuracy, bias, transparency, and accessibility all have to be considered from the beginning. My education has made me just as interested in those questions as I am in what AI is technically capable of doing. Living with a chronic autoimmune condition already requires an enormous amount of attention and self-management. Technology should reduce that burden rather than create another complicated system someone has to learn. My goal in AI is ultimately to build technology around the people who will actually use it. Whether that means helping someone better understand their health information, recognizing a useful pattern in their data, or simply making reliable information less overwhelming, I want my work to have a practical impact. I may not be able to eliminate the challenges that come with chronic conditions like Type 1 diabetes, but I hope to use my education to build tools that give people better information, greater confidence, and a little more support in managing their health every day.

When I think about what I want to build, I do not immediately think of one specific product or company. I think about building a future where I can use what I have learned to create technology that genuinely helps people, while also building a life that shows my daughter what is possible. My own future has been something I have built a little at a time. Ultimately, I hope to build a career and a life around curiosity, education, and creating things that have a purpose. If I can use my education to make difficult information easier to understand, create technology that helps someone, and make opportunities feel more attainable for the people coming after me, that is a future I will be proud to have built.

I did not always imagine that I would end up earning two STEM degrees, let alone a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence. My path into STEM was much more about curiosity than having a perfectly planned career. I became interested in technology because I loved figuring out how things worked, solving problems, and realizing that something I created could actually make another person’s life easier. That curiosity eventually led me to earn my bachelor’s degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and, most recently, my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. As a first-generation college graduate, getting here has made me especially aware of how important representation and access are in STEM. During my master’s program, I became particularly interested in artificial intelligence ethics, healthcare, and education. I also want to contribute to greater representation within STEM. Being successful in these fields becomes easier to imagine when you can see people with backgrounds similar to your own already participating in them. I especially think about this as the mother of a young daughter. She has watched me work through college assignments, build projects, struggle with problems, figure them out, and eventually graduate. I hope that growing up around that makes STEM feel completely normal and attainable to her. My educational path has shown me that there is no single type of person who belongs in technology. You do not need to have started coding as a child or followed a perfect educational path. I started my own business at 18, became a mom, and continued my education while building a life and family. Now I have a graduate degree in AI. I hope to use that education to build responsible technology, make complicated information more accessible, and encourage people who may not immediately see themselves represented in STEM to recognize that there is a place for them too.

Entering higher education as an outsider to the system came with a lot of uncertainty for me. My dad immigrated to the United States from England, making me a second-generation immigrant, and I am also a first-generation college student and graduate. No one in my family had gone through the college system before me, so there was never really a roadmap for what I was supposed to do. A lot of the process was something I learned simply by doing it. My path to higher education was also anything but traditional. I moved out at 17 and started my own business at 18, so my early adulthood was focused more on working, becoming independent, and building a life than following the traditional path from high school directly into a four-year university. Later, I became a wife and a mom, and when I decided to continue my education, I had to figure out how school could fit into a life that was already very full. At times, higher education felt like a system designed for people who already understood how it worked. There were applications, financial aid, degree requirements, transfer credits, and countless other things I had to navigate without having someone in my family who had done it before. I definitely had moments where I wondered whether I was taking on too much or whether I really belonged in some of the spaces I was entering. Eventually, I realized that not having a traditional path did not mean I was on the wrong one. I went on to earn my bachelor’s degree in Cloud Computing and Solutions and recently completed my Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Becoming the first person in my family to earn a college degree, and then continuing all the way through graduate school, means a lot to me because I know how uncertain that path once felt. My experiences have also shaped what I want to do with my education. During graduate school, I became especially interested in AI ethics and how technology can be used in healthcare and education. For my master’s capstone, I created NeuroGuide AI, an educational tool designed to make complicated information about Alzheimer’s disease and genetic risk easier for everyday people to understand. That project helped me realize that I want to build technology that is not only innovative, but accessible and genuinely useful. Being a second-generation immigrant and first-generation college graduate has taught me how powerful access to education can be. I also have a young daughter now, and knowing that she will grow up with a completely different understanding of higher education is incredibly meaningful to me. She will grow up knowing that college is an option because she watched her mom do it. My hope for the future is to keep using what I have learned to open doors, whether that means creating accessible technology, helping others feel more comfortable entering technical fields, or simply being the person who can provide the guidance I once had to figure out for myself.

Recovery, to me, means moving forward without expecting yourself to suddenly have everything figured out. It is about recognizing where you have been, learning from it, and making the decision to keep building a better life one day at a time. I think recovery can look different for everyone. It can mean overcoming addiction, healing from a difficult period in life, rebuilding after a loss, or simply changing habits and patterns that are no longer helping you become the person you want to be. What matters most is the willingness to keep trying, even when progress is not perfect. I have learned throughout my own life that growth is rarely a straight line. There are setbacks, changes in direction, and moments when you question whether you are making any progress at all. Looking back, though, those difficult periods are often where the most growth happened. As a mom, I think about recovery and personal growth differently now because I know my daughter is watching how I handle challenges. I want her to see that struggling with something does not define a person. What matters is what you choose to do next. Ultimately, recovery means giving yourself the opportunity to create a future that is not limited by your past. It is choosing to keep learning, growing, and showing up for yourself and the people you love.

I enjoy playing golf because it gives me a chance to slow down, get outside, and challenge myself in a completely different way. So much of my life revolves around family, work, education, and technology, so I appreciate having something that requires me to focus on what is right in front of me. Golf can be relaxing one minute and incredibly frustrating the next, but I think that is also part of what makes it fun. One thing I really enjoy about golf is that there is always room to improve. You can have a terrible shot followed by one that makes you feel like you finally figured everything out. It teaches you pretty quickly that getting frustrated usually does not help. You have to reset, focus on the next shot, and keep going. I have found that mindset applies to a lot more than golf. As a female golfer, one of the biggest challenges has simply been becoming comfortable in a sport that can still feel very male dominated. When you are learning, it is easy to feel like everyone around you already knows the rules, terminology, etiquette, and exactly what they are doing. There can be extra pressure to avoid making mistakes or slowing anyone down because you already feel like you stand out. I have learned to become much more comfortable with simply being a learner. I do not have to be the best golfer on the course to belong there. I can ask questions, make a bad shot, laugh about it, and try again. That lesson has actually been important throughout my life. I am a first-generation college graduate and recently completed my Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, another area that has traditionally had fewer women. There have been plenty of situations where I have walked into a room and wondered whether I belonged there. Over time, I have realized that being inexperienced or being one of the few women in a space does not mean that space is not for me. I also have a young daughter, so this is something I think about differently now. I want her to grow up seeing women participate in whatever interests them, whether that is technology, golf, or something completely different. I never want her to assume something is “for men” simply because there happen to be more men doing it. Golf reminds me to be patient, keep learning, and not let one bad moment define the rest of the experience. Most importantly, it reminds me that sometimes the best way to become comfortable in a space is simply to keep showing up.

The impact I want to make is centered around using technology, especially artificial intelligence, in ways that actually help people. I recently completed my Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, and one of the biggest things I learned throughout the process is that technology does not have to be complicated or intimidating to make a difference. Some of the best uses of AI are the ones that make information easier to understand, give people better access to resources, or solve problems that affect their everyday lives. My own path through education has played a huge role in shaping that vision. Becoming a mother actually pushed me to continue my education and think much more seriously about the kind of future I want to help create. My passion for women's health is both personal and professional. As a mother, a survivor of intimate partner violence, and a technologist pursuing a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence, I have experienced firsthand how women’s health, physical, mental, and emotional, is often misunderstood, overlooked, or deprioritized. These gaps have driven me to dedicate my academic and professional journey to building solutions that empower women to take control of their health, advocate for themselves, and access care without delay, shame, or confusion. What inspired me most to enter the healthcare technology space was the alarming inconsistency in diagnosis and treatment timelines for conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, and postpartum disorders. I live with PCOS myself, and like many women, I endured years of confusion, misdiagnosis, and dismissiveness from providers. It wasn’t until I began tracking my symptoms using a combination of journaling and personal data tools that I realized the transformative power of self-knowledge, technology, and visibility. That experience made me realize how much potential there is in combining AI with personalized women’s health solutions. Now, I am developing a concept for an AI-driven platform that uses anonymized patient data to better predict, track, and personalize treatment options for menstrual health and hormonal conditions. My focus is on ethical AI and human-centered design, ensuring that the models behind these solutions are trained with inclusive datasets that reflect the diverse biological, racial, and social realities women face. I aim to leverage cloud computing and machine learning to create tools that provide meaningful insights while preserving privacy, especially for women in vulnerable situations or underserved communities. In parallel with my academic work, I also support a concierge medical practice where I am leading backend optimization efforts to improve patient communication and data visibility—an experience that has strengthened my understanding of real-world clinical workflows and the importance of integrating technology without creating additional barriers to care. I am also committed to open-source contributions and public education, regularly mentoring other women in tech and health data literacy. My long-term goal is to work at the intersection of AI, women’s health, and digital equity. I envision launching a nonprofit initiative that offers free or low-cost digital health tools to women from low-income backgrounds. These tools will focus on reproductive health tracking, hormone cycle education, and access to telehealth providers trained in trauma-informed care. I believe that empowering women with knowledge about their own bodies and symptoms is one of the most powerful ways to improve health outcomes and overall well-being. This scholarship would be instrumental in supporting my continued research, giving me the financial freedom to invest in the necessary tools and platforms that bring these ideas to life. It would also amplify my ability to collaborate with others in the FemTech space who share a vision of healthcare that listens, adapts, and heals without bias. Through ethical AI, community-based solutions, and a deep commitment to inclusivity, I hope to be part of a new generation of changemakers working to close the data and care gaps that have persisted for far too long. Growing up in a low-income, single-parent household taught me the value of resilience, resourcefulness, and faith. My mother did everything she could to keep us afloat, even when we had very little. Watching her sacrifice instilled in me a sense of responsibility to not only survive, but to thrive, and to use that strength to uplift others walking a similar path. There were days we did not have reliable internet or enough food, yet I taught myself coding and business skills late at night using a borrowed laptop. I launched my own handmade business at seventeen to support myself and eventually went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Cloud Computing, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. I am now pursuing a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence while raising my daughter and continuing to serve my community. I use every opportunity to give back. I mentor women returning to school, teach coding basics to single mothers, and provide free tech help to small local businesses. I believe our past does not disqualify us, it prepares us. Every hardship I have faced has deepened my empathy, sharpened my skills, and clarified my mission. I am actively working toward creating a nonprofit that equips women, especially mothers from underserved backgrounds, with tech skills and digital literacy so they can build independent futures. I want to be proof that we are more than our circumstances, and that with the right tools and support, we can create lasting change. This scholarship would help me continue this work, easing the cost of equipment and learning resources I need for graduate school. More than that, it would be an investment in a mission to turn struggle into service, for my daughter, for my community, and for the next generation.

Faith is the foundation of my life, the compass that guides not only my personal decisions but also the way I lead and uplift others. As a Christian woman, I believe that leadership is not about control, but about compassion. It is about seeing people, valuing them, and helping them rise, not for recognition, but for the glory of God. My leadership style is rooted in service, humility, and the belief that when we lift others, we reflect Christ’s love in its purest form. During one of the most difficult times in my life, my faith became both my anchor and my testimony. I was navigating the aftermath of an abusive relationship, raising my daughter alone, and working toward my college degree. It would have been easy to shrink into survival mode, but instead, I chose to step up in service. I began mentoring other women who were walking similar paths, many of them single mothers who had returned to school after years away. Some felt invisible, discouraged, and unsure of their place. I used that space to remind them of their worth, not only as students or mothers, but as women created in God's image, capable of healing and greatness. I organized weekly support meetings over Zoom, shared devotionals, and offered practical help, from scholarship guidance to résumé coaching. We prayed together before finals, encouraged one another when life became overwhelming, and celebrated small wins as sacred victories. One woman told me that it was the first time in years she felt seen and spiritually supported. That moment reminded me of the power of faith-led leadership. It is not about loud titles or platforms. It is about showing up with integrity and reflecting Christ's heart through consistent care. Faith has also influenced how I lead professionally. In every tech or academic environment, I lead with gentleness, clear communication, and a deep desire to serve. Whether I am tutoring others in cloud computing, building tools to help underserved communities, or volunteering for local outreach events, I ask myself the same question: How would Jesus lead here? That question keeps me grounded and reminds me that real leadership begins with listening, loving, and lifting. This experience has shaped my vision for the future. I want to use my graduate degree in Artificial Intelligence to build ethical tools that serve vulnerable populations, especially women and children recovering from trauma. I want to combine faith, technology, and leadership to create programs and platforms that bring light into dark spaces. I also hope to launch a nonprofit one day that equips Christian women with technical and entrepreneurial skills so they can support themselves and their families with dignity. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue my education and expand my ability to serve others. It would be more than financial assistance, it would be an investment in a vision of leadership rooted in faith, grace, and action. In a world that often measures success by status or wealth, I measure mine by how many people I have helped along the way. I was tired, broke, and scared—but I knew I had to show my daughter what it looks like to fight for a better life. I enrolled in college, studied relentlessly, and applied for every scholarship I could find. I eventually earned my bachelor's degree in Cloud Computing with a 4.0 GPA and am now working on my graduate degree in Artificial Intelligence. The adversity I faced taught me more than any classroom ever could. It taught me resilience, creativity, and how to build something from the ground up—not just in a technical sense, but in my spirit. It also taught me empathy. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, unheard, and unsupported. That is why I dedicate so much of my time to giving back. I mentor other single mothers and students returning to school, many of whom face similar barriers. I volunteer with local nonprofits, lead digital literacy workshops, and offer free tutoring in basic coding and resume building for women in transitional housing. To someone facing the same circumstances I once did, I would say this: You do not have to be fearless, you just have to be willing. Willing to try again. Willing to fail and keep going. Service has always been at the heart of my journey. As a mother, student, survivor, and advocate, I have learned that the greatest measure of success is not what you earn, but what you give. I have made it my mission to serve those around me while pursuing a degree in Artificial Intelligence that I intend to use for good. Currently, I give back in a variety of ways, both through technical volunteering and community outreach. I mentor women who are reentering school or the workforce, especially those who have experienced abuse or financial instability. Many of them are single mothers like myself, trying to juggle parenting and school with very little support. I help them navigate digital learning platforms, teach them how to create resumes, and offer basic training in coding and cloud technology. I also assist with scholarship applications and FAFSA guidance, helping remove financial barriers to education. Beyond mentorship, I actively volunteer with local organizations in Western Maryland. I have led efforts to distribute care kits to homeless women and children, offering not only basic hygiene items but also notes of encouragement. I have helped organize donation drives, supported domestic violence shelters with digital resource guides, and provided pro bono consulting to small local businesses hit hard by the pandemic. My goal is always the same, to help others find a way forward, even when the road seems uncertain. My passion for service has also shaped how I approach my studies and my career goals. As I complete my graduate degree in Artificial Intelligence, I am focusing on building tools that directly support vulnerable communities. One of my long-term projects is to develop a secure, anonymous platform for survivors of domestic abuse to find nearby resources without leaving a traceable digital footprint. In the future, I hope to work with nonprofits to develop ethical AI solutions that support accessibility, education, and public health initiatives around the world. To me, giving back is not an extracurricular, it is a calling. It informs every part of my life, from the way I raise my daughter to the way I approach a coding project. I believe technology should serve people, not profit, and I plan to dedicate my career to ensuring that mission is realized. Receiving this scholarship would support not only my education but my purpose. As a first-generation college student, a mother, and a survivor of intimate partner violence, I’ve had every reason to give up. But I chose instead to rise, to learn, and to give back to others walking paths like mine. When I left an abusive relationship, I had no financial safety net, no degree, and a child to raise alone. I had to rebuild everything from the ground up, emotionally, financially, and academically. At times, I was working full-time, attending school, and managing single motherhood with barely enough to cover groceries. Despite it all, I maintained a 4.0 GPA, completed my bachelor’s in Cloud Computing, and immediately enrolled in graduate studies in Artificial Intelligence at a Baptist university where faith and education walk hand-in-hand. I refused to let my circumstances dictate my future. But success for me has never been just about surviving, it’s about service. I’ve dedicated my life to giving back in every way I can. During my undergraduate program, I volunteered as a peer mentor to other nontraditional students, helping them navigate online learning platforms, schedule management, and scholarship applications. I also tutor single mothers in introductory coding and digital literacy, empowering them with skills that can lead to remote, flexible job opportunities. My volunteerism doesn’t stop with academics. After more than ten years running a small business, a woman returning to school never dreamed she would one day be creating artificial intelligence models and cloud-based systems. I'm glad to be working on a degree in computer science today; one of the most important projects I have worked on thus far is a cloud-based inventory management system I created and implemented with Django, Python, and PostgreSQL. Originally a portfolio challenge, the project soon turned into something far more personal. From a clean, customizable dashboard, I developed the tool to assist small business owners like myself in tracking customer orders, managing products, and creating sales analytics. Many microbusiness owners control their operations using spreadsheets or manual procedures, which frequently results in expensive mistakes and lost time. I aimed to design a system that was strong and easily available, no additional subscription costs, no coding knowledge needed. Along the way, I discovered not only how to create a safe, scalable system from nothing but also how to approach problems like an engineer, iteratively debugging without frustration, documenting every decision for future users. Every tool I included, user authentication, inventory tracking, and dashboard reports, was evaluated via usability. To be sure the tool satisfied practical needs, I even asked other company owners for user interviews. The most potent aspect of this experience, though, was realizing I could create something significant from the ground up using technology to empower others in the same position I once was in. The code itself was not so important. My love of working in technology comes from that kind of goal. Being the great equalizer motivates me to use technology. I had not come from a conventional technological background. From a low-income background, I was a self-taught entrepreneur raising a daughter while learning to code between business orders. Still, in this field, curiosity, tenacity, and the capacity for lifelong learning rule most important. Growing in computer science, the more I have come to see how much good technology can accomplish, especially when it is created with real people in mind. I want to lead the way in small business owner success, increased access to education, or ethical artificial intelligence development, and the safeguarding of user privacy. Coming back to school in my late twenties, I came from a background of poverty, adversity, and limited educational access. Growing up, college was never offered to me as a choice, but once I became a mother in 2022, I realized I had to forge a different road for my daughter and myself. Every course, every difficulty, every restless night, she inspires me to keep on. Being an example of faith-driven resilience will help me to show that everything is possible with God's direction and constant effort. I have full faith that God will lead me to the right path to and for Him. Artificial intelligence is my major, reflecting both my technical ability and my great curiosity about the ethical and human-centered aspects of newly developed technologies. Eventually, especially for communities that are disadvantaged, I hope to oversee initiatives creating fair, easily available AI systems in education and healthcare. The cost of tuition, technology fees, software, and basic living expenses still heavily affects my family, even though I work full-time and keep a high GPA. Financial aid choices are few for graduate students, and the expenses of merely "staying in school" sometimes compete with those of running a household and child rearing. The consistent dominance of Nordic nations including Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden in the general happiness rankings was among the most shocking results. Though long, dark winters,conditions I would have thought would reduce emotional well-being, these countries regularly show high life satisfaction. The report ascribes this to solid social safety nets, great confidence in government, low rates of corruption, and a great sense of freedom and community. These results cast doubt on the idea that income or even the environment define happiness. Not surprisingly either was the United States' ranking declining to its lowest point yet, 24th: Rising social isolation, lower trust, and declining community support all contribute to this fall. These results imply that significant social ties cannot be replaced by financial success or technological innovation,a crucial realization as I get ready for a career in a very technical, sometimes isolating field like artificial intelligence. The ranks for "Positive Emotions" and "Negative Emotions" exposed more subtlety. Nations ranking highest on the "Positive Emotions" list, Paraguay, Panama, and Indonesia among others, often have lower GDPs but strong cultural values based on family, thanksfulness, and daily enjoyment. This difference emphasizes how emotional well-being is not always correlated with economic data. Conversely, nations experiencing political unrest or conflict naturally ranked highest on the "Negative Emotions" scales, so underscoring how directly outside pressures shape the emotional terrain of people. Social Support is the one parameter from the report I would pick to maximize on a worldwide basis. A consistent support system is a major factor influencing well-being in all the happiest countries. Personal and society resilience depend much on our capacity to rely on others during trying circumstances, whether that means through government-sponsored safety nets, family ties, or community bonds. This realization supports my conviction in building solid personal relationships and supporting cooperative settings as I negotiate my graduate education and future employment. Knowing these worldwide trends and emotional markers has changed my perspective on my own personal work-life balance. The financial strain of graduate admissions has been one of the most daunting challenges I've faced, despite the fact that I've been determined to overcome it. Anxiety makes it more difficult for me to advocate for myself in academic environments; sometimes my differences cause me to feel alone. As I learn to self-advocate for my needs and negotiate social and academic obstacles, these materials have been priceless in guiding me. -Physical & Mental Wellness: My ability to control symptoms has much improved by giving exercise, a healthy diet, and enough sleep top priority. I have also learned to establish limits, say no to pointless worries, and put self-care first free from guilt. Although keeping mental health in a rigorous academic environment presents real difficulties, I have come to see self-care as a need rather than a luxury. Developing good coping strategies, getting help, and keeping aware of my well-being have helped me to balance mental health with academic success. This scholarship would enable me to keep giving my mental health a top priority while offering great financial support, so relieving some of the external pressures causing stress. How Mental Illness Has Interfelled with My Life Mental illness has played a significant role in shaping both my journey and my family’s experiences. It is a challenge that extends beyond the individual, affecting relationships, responsibilities, and everyday life. The struggles I have faced, both personally and as a loved one witnessing the effects of mental illness, have profoundly influenced my path, strengthening my resilience and deepening my empathy for others. For me, I have seen personally how mental illness can transform a person. At times, a close family member's bipolar disorder struggle made house life erratic. There were times when everyone in the house felt the emotional weight of the illness and when communication failed. Managing my own academic and personal goals in this setting was difficult, but it also sharpened my compassion, flexibility, and emotional fortitude. How These Events Have Changed Me Dealing with mental illness in the family can be taxing, but it also makes me value mental health advocacy and support networks. It has motivated me to be more patient, sympathetic, and proactive in looking for means to remove the stigma around mental health. Academically, these encounters have driven my ambition to work in a field where I might support technology solutions enhancing mental well-being, education, or awareness of mental health issues. Whether it's including mental health support in AI-driven platforms, creating easily available materials, or creating inclusive environments for debate, I am dedicated to making sure others do not feel alone in their challenges. Apart from my passion for golf, I actively participate in guiding upcoming sportsmen in my neighborhood. At neighborhood junior golf courses, I tutor young players about endurance, discipline, and mental resilience in addition to helping them acquire basic skills. Many of these students lack the same access to the sport and come from underrepresented backgrounds, much as I do. Through my experience and encouragement, I hope to close the accessibility gap in golf and motivate the following generation of varied golfers. Obstacles I Have Run Across as a Female Golfer Playing golf as a woman has presented certain difficulties. One of the most important challenges has been the availability of competitive possibilities. Many competitions and training courses are created especially for male golfers, thus it is challenging to find venues where women are equally urged to participate. Early on, I observed that many courses and clubs gave male players top priority, usually including better tee times or coaching possibilities. Being the first member of my family to go to college, I have had many unsure times. Mostly on my own, I had to negotiate the challenges of higher education while juggling my job, parenting, and academic obligations. I had a beautiful daughter in 2022 that motivates me every single day. She is my motivating spirit and the reason I chose to go back to college and finish my degree. I want her to know that one can rise above obstacles and fulfill their dreams regardless of circumstances. My love of STEM results from my enthusiasm for creativity and problem-solving. I have been enthralled with how science and technology might change lives since I was a small child. One of my most treasured memories of my brother-in-law, a proud Army Ranger, is a scene highlighting his fortitude, humor, and relentless family loyalty. Being one of the most elite military units, he exudes discipline and resilience; but, what really makes an impact on me is his ability to strike a balance between those traits with compassion and humor. We were playing backyard football at a family gathering a few years ago. Naturally, given his military background, my brother-in-law assumed unofficial team coach. Like on a battlefield, he instantly turned our casual game into a mini-boot camp, barking playful commands and using "strategies." Laughing and making sure everyone enjoyed themselves, he would yell things like, "Move like your life depends on it!" or "Secure the zone!" That was one of those times when his Ranger soul came through, fierce but yet incredibly warm. Notwithstanding his intensity, my brother-in-law made sure everyone, including the children, felt capable and included. By kneeling down to her level and stressing how "even Rangers start small," he helped my young niece, who was anxious about joining. That small deed captured his natural ability to motivate and inspire others, even in a lighthearted game. I have always loved this side of him, his capacity to make everyone around him feel important and competent. Beyond these lighthearted times of connection and laughter, my brother-in-law has imparted priceless lessons about tenacity and service. He once related tales of the demanding training and missions he had completed as a Ranger. Although the specifics were few, the grit and will needed for such a job were obvious. You do not quit, he advised me. "You dig deeper even in difficult circumstances and even when you believe you have reached your limit." That kind of thinking has been my compass in my own life, helping me to keep on despite obstacles and aim high. His military service has also helped me to see responsibility and sacrifice more fully. To perform his responsibilities, my brother-in-law missed holidays and birthdays and spent much time with loved ones. He never grumbles, though, and his loyalty to his family and nation is unflinching. Seeing him balance these obligations motivated me to approach my own life with the same goal and will. My brother-in-law models what it means to lead with integrity and character. On the battlefield or in a backyard football game, he motivates everyone around to be their best. His will and selflessness are demonstrated by his capacity to juggle the obligations of his military career with his dedication to family and community. A constant reminder of the values I try to uphold, resilience, kindness, and service to others, this memory of my brother-in-law and the teachings he still imparts to me act as His influence on my life goes much beyond his position as a Ranger; he has shown me what it means to lead with heart and live with intent. During high school, I was diagnosed with social anxiety following years of battling extreme discomfort in social situations. Even when I had something to offer, my anxiety often caused me to back off from speaking up. In some circumstances, particularly when under pressure or surrounded by strangers, I also suffered from selective mutism. This made me feel frustrated and isolated since I thought my anxiety was preventing me from really expressing myself. Getting a diagnosis let me know my challenges but also made me realize the work ahead of me, so it was a relief as well as a challenge.
