My educational aspirations are to become a veterinarian. There are only 2% of African American female veterinarians and it is my goals to make that percentage a little bigger. Ever since I was little, I have dreamed of being a veterinarian and in order to achieve that goal I received my bachelor's degree in animal and poultry science, and I am currently in my master's program for Biotechnology. I have a strong desire to always be learning, and I plan on achieving my master's degree ultimately to make my application for when I apply to veterinary school more competitive. I do not think there is enough representative for black veterinarians and especially not for black female veterinarians. I want to be that representation for the next generation so that they know it is possible to achieve any goal they set their minds to. I try to be an inspiration in my community now by being an active member in my church congregation, doing community service with my historically black sorority Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and volunteering at my local animal shelter. To be an active part of my church congregation I am the vice president of our fitness ministry where we encourage church members to come to our workout boot camp twice a month in order to promote an active lifestyle. Along with leading an active lifestyle I also do community service with my sorority in order to help the less fortunate in our community. We currently partner with elementary and high schools to make sure all students have the necessary supplies in order to succeed in school. We always volunteer in nursing homes helping the most vulnerable in our community, the elderly. We want to make sure they know that they are not forgotten and still loved. As well as making sure their basic needs are being met because most senior citizens are on a fixed income and should not have to worry about their basic needs being met. Lastly, I volunteer at my local animal shelter helping to walk and socialize the shelter dogs. That is why they begin to get used to and start to trust humans again before they get adopted. Hopefully lowering the rate of a failed adoption and being returned to the animal shelter. To me all the things that I have previously mentioned are why I think I while have an impact in the STEM field. I want to be better for myself and my community, which is why I'm actively working to make the world a better place for everyone.

A global issue that I am passionate about is the devastating effect cancer cause not all for that person, but the rippling effects of their family. Unfortunately, cancer is very prevalent in my family. My grandfather died when I was eight due to lung cancer, my aunt died from leukemia when I was twelve, and lastly my grandmother is currently in remission for breast cancer. I have already taken the intuitive to have early screening down for breast cancer because when my mom was my same age of twenty-five years old this when she found a benign lump on her breast. I am proactive screening myself because I know all too well what would happen with a late diagnosis. Cancer has been me to make to find the cure to it because I don't want anyone else to go through the lose that I've been through. My educational aspirations are to become a veterinarian and work in the research field in order to help develop a cure for cancer. There are only 2% of African American female veterinarians and it is my goals to make that percentage a little bigger. Ever since I was little, I have dreamed of being a veterinarian to achieve this goal. I received my two bachelor's degrees in animal and poultry science and Biology. Currently I am using my bachelor's degrees working as a veterinarian research technician. In my lab we are studying the effect of a drug called tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is hormonal drug used to lower the response of estrogen for people who are in remission for breast cancer not to have a recurrence. I am so passionate about this drug because it could benefit my grandmother from having to go through radiation again. I am currently in my master's program in Biotechnology. My thesis for my master's degree is on stem cell research and how, if researched and implemented correctly, it has the potential to cure cancer and any other major disease. I have a strong desire to always be learning, and I plan on achieving my master's degree ultimately to make my application for when I apply to veterinary school more competitive. I want to be a research veterinarian in order to lead animal research studies on a topic I am passionate about. Animal research is taboo, but I believe studying things like stem cell research will lead to something great like the cure for cancer or at least the tools to understand how we develop cancer. I truly believe these goals are achievable, but I not only want what is best for my family but other families that have been devastated by a family member with cancer.
