The impact I hope to make begins with a simple belief: knowledge has the power to create change when it is shared and used to help others. My passion for marine science was inspired by a lifelong connection to the water, beginning with the time I spent on my grandparents’ houseboat. Growing up around the Chesapeake Bay allowed me to appreciate the beauty and importance of our natural environment. I became fascinated by the wildlife, ecosystems, and hidden world beneath the water’s surface, and those experiences shaped my desire to protect our oceans and inspire others to care for the planet.
I want to use my education in marine science and biology to contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future. My goal is to pursue a career focused on marine conservation, research, and environmental policy, with the hope of working with organizations such as NOAA. Through scientific research and community outreach, I want to help develop solutions that protect marine ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and ensure that future generations can experience the same connection with nature that inspired me.
The people who inspire me are those who dedicate their lives to serving others and protecting the world around them. I have been inspired by scientists, conservationists, educators, and community leaders who use their knowledge and passion to create meaningful change. Their work has shown me that making an impact does not always begin with a large action; it begins with individuals who care enough to take responsibility and make a difference.
My own experiences have taught me the importance of service and leadership. As Student Council Class President during both my junior and senior years, I learned that leadership means listening to others, understanding different perspectives, and working together toward a common goal. Serving as a Page for the 2026 Maryland General Assembly also strengthened my appreciation for public service and showed me how important it is for individuals to use their voices to improve their communities. Through volunteering with organizations such as the Calvert Marine Museum, I have seen how education and outreach can inspire people to become more connected to the environment.
As I continue my education, I hope to give back by sharing what I learn and encouraging others to become involved in protecting our planet. Whether through scientific research, environmental education, or community engagement, I want to help others recognize that everyone has a role in creating a more sustainable future.
The change I am determined to create is one where science and compassion work together. I want my future career to be about more than discoveries; I want it to be about using those discoveries to protect ecosystems, support communities, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. The curiosity that began with looking out over the water has grown into a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact on the world around me.
Women in STEM Scholarship
For as long as I can remember, I have been drawn to the mysteries of the world around me. Some of my earliest memories come from spending time on my grandparents’ houseboat, where I developed a deep connection to the water and the environment. To me, selflessness means using my time, abilities, and voice to support others and make a positive difference without expecting anything in return. Throughout my life, I have learned that true leadership is not about recognition or titles; it is about serving others, standing up for what you believe in, and continuing to make an impact even when challenges arise.
One of the ways I have demonstrated selflessness is through my role as Student Council Class President during both my junior and senior years of high school. Being trusted by my classmates was an honor, but I saw the position as a responsibility to represent their ideas, listen to their concerns, and help create a school environment where everyone felt included. I learned that leadership requires patience, empathy, and the willingness to put the needs of others before yourself. Whether organizing events, supporting student initiatives, or helping classmates feel heard, I worked to make sure my actions reflected the trust placed in me.
My commitment to altruism has also been shaped by my passion for marine conservation and protecting the environment. Growing up with a connection to the water through time spent on my grandparents’ houseboat, I developed a deep appreciation for marine life and the ecosystems that surround us. Volunteering with conservation organizations such as the Calvert Marine Museum allowed me to turn that passion into action by contributing to efforts that educate others and promote awareness of the importance of protecting our natural world. I believe that caring for the environment is an act of service because it benefits not only the present generation but also those who will come after us.
Pursuing a passion is not always easy, and I have learned the importance of perseverance when standing behind something I believe in. My journey toward becoming a marine biologist began with curiosity and a love for the ocean, but it has grown into a commitment to making a difference through science, education, and advocacy. For most of my life, I thought learning was just a requirement, a box to check off, until a simple children’s show changed everything. School felt like a list of assignments and tests instead of a place to explore the world. Many opportunities I had were overshadowed by the belief that education was boring or overwhelming. Whether that came from outside influences or my own struggles with focus, I never understood that learning could be exciting. That changed when I discovered a television show that sparked my curiosity in a way nothing else had.
The Deep is an Australian children’s animated series released in 2015. The show spans four seasons and 65 episodes and is currently most accessible on YouTube. While it may seem unusual that a children’s cartoon could influence someone’s academic ambitions, The Deep completely changed how I saw learning and is the reason I aspire to become a marine biologist.
The show follows a family of underwater explorers who uncover hidden secrets of the ocean, including sunken cities, mysterious sea creatures, and long-lost pirate relics. Although the adventures are often fantastical, each episode includes real marine science and historical facts. The sense of wonder conveyed through their adventures sparked something in me. The introduction to every episode captivated me: “While others look up at the stars, we know there are an infinite number of things that shine in the darkness below. There are things lurking in the seas that long ago vanished into myth.” Those words became my personal anthem. I wanted that sense of discovery in my own life.
As a child, my dream career changed constantly. One day I wanted to be an artist, another day a writer. However, after discovering The Deep, my interest in marine biology remained. Watching the show encouraged me to explore the real science behind the oceans, fostering curiosity about marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and the importance of protecting our planet’s waters.
Today, what started as inspiration from a childhood show has grown into a genuine passion. The oceans cover more than seventy percent of our planet, yet so much remains unexplored. That mystery, combined with the urgent need for conservation, motivates me to pursue this field.
In the future, I hope to travel the world while participating in marine conservation projects and research initiatives that support the sustainability of our oceans. My long-term goal is to work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), contributing to research and policies that protect marine environments. I want to help preserve the oceans for future generations.
What began as inspiration from a simple animated show has grown into a lifelong commitment. It showed me that learning is not just an obligation, it is an opportunity to explore the unknown. By pursuing marine biology, I hope to turn the wonder I first experienced watching The Deep into meaningful work that protects and preserves the incredible world beneath the ocean’s surface.
