Bio

Dance is the heartbeat of my soul, that pulses with energy and rhythm. Ever since I was three, I have loved the thrill of expressing my talents through motion and music. Even after 13+ years, I still feel the same spark of performing and letting my personality shine on the dance floor. No matter the outcome, I always had a smile on my face, knowing that I gave it my all. Working with kids has been one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. At my church, I volunteer with my Children’s Ministry and assist in kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms. When in these classrooms, I love seeing how these children think and how I can help them. From playing games to being a listening ear, even the smallest bit of assistance brings me the largest amount of joy, knowing that I had an impact on their young lives. From all of these experiences, I’ve realized that I want to make a difference in the lives of others. As an empathetic person, I always wish for the best for people. I found that my calm temperament soothes the hard moments of people’s lives. Thus, I believe that becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner is my calling. As a straight A student, I am fully committed to learning and furthering my education into college. I’d love to use the same drive I developed from dance to be a compassionate individual in my community. Your support would empower me to give back meaningfully as a skilled nurse. Just like my love for dance and working with kids, my heart beats to sustain the lives of those I want to serve. I’m now ready for my heart to beat to a new drum-nursing.

Sitting bedside reading a book aloud to distract from the sounds of beeping hospital monitors. A warm touch soothes a child's cry. Questions from families are met with clarity for their diagnosis. My heart beats for the field of nursing. Just as every rhythm ensures physical life, my passion will be the pulse for patient well-being. In four years, I will have obtained my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, marking one step closer towards becoming a Pediatric Nurse. Caring for children has always felt natural to me. I have fond memories of bonding with my younger brother, Nicholas. A lego enthusiast, he would dive into a new project with eagerness. His excitement of starting a new project was sometimes met with sadness when the pieces would not fit properly. Wiping away the tears, I taught him to remain calm, as we discussed how to find the solution. The warm embrace he gave me when we finished the project inspired me to become a passionate caregiver. Nurses are among the closest advocates for patients, where they respond to most of their immediate needs and remain with the patient to ensure that they receive quality care. In my everyday relationships, I am always willing to assist and comfort those around me. As a Youth Volunteer at two local churches, I find ease in building positive connections with children. Whether it is greeting each child with a warm smile, celebrating the small wins of the day, or comforting campers when they are having a rough moment, I remain a dedicated advocate for children’s well-being and happiness at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. While volunteering at the Houston First Baptist Daycation summer camp, I worked as an intern, dedicating nearly 80 hours of service to create a positive environment for children ages 7-12. Playing games and crafts with these kids enlightened me, as I loved embracing their curious questions and funny stories. I envision being one of the nearly 200,000 newly hired nurses that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects are needed to enter the workforce. Growing up as a minority female in an urban community, I understand the importance of representation in healthcare. My goal is to provide personalized care in a clinic that nurtures underserved communities. Fostering a sense of community drives me to promote well-being beyond the clinical setting. A recent Bayer survey revealed that nearly 1 in 3 individuals avoid medical care due to fear or lack of knowledge. My goal is to eliminate this fear by using mobile clinics to educate underserved youth about nutrition and health. By visiting schools, this mobile clinic would present information in an easy-to-understand manner, while providing on-site care. I firmly believe in educating children about the importance of their health, and these mobile clinics can inspire them to take charge of their own well-being, thus positively impacting their lives. I have a genuine heart fueled by a desire to make healthcare a promise for all, not just a privilege for some. I want to bring joy and healing to the world, one child at a time. The Women in Healthcare Scholarship will allow me to afford the education needed to give back to my community. Your financial support would help offset the cost of college expenses, allowing me to devote more time to my studies. This award would also provide additional time to gain clinical experience in healthcare through internships at hospitals and community centers near my institution. Your investment in my future will help me to continue to write the pages in the next chapter of my journey.

As a future Class of 2030 college graduate, I envision being one of the nearly 200,000 newly hired nurses that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects are needed to enter the workforce by that time. Growing up as a minority female in an urban Houston community, I understand the importance of representation in healthcare. My goal is to provide personalized family-centered care in a clinic that nurtures underserved communities. Keeping the lines of communication open and maintaining a welcoming bedside manner lie at my core to provide effective treatment for my future patients. Taking the time to support medical care can have profound effects on patient outcomes. Whether it is demonstrating how to use an inhaler or explaining when to use an EpiPen, these simple interactions can reduce unnecessary, and potentially expensive, emergency care. I am also driven to foster a sense of trust beyond the clinical setting. A recent Bayer survey revealed that nearly 1 in 3 individuals avoid medical care due to fear or lack of knowledge. I want to eliminate this concern by also establishing mobile bus clinics in disadvantaged neighborhoods to educate families about health topics, such as nutrition, physical fitness, and mental wellness through school partnerships. I want to meet families in their own communities (especially since transportation is often a barrier) to support vaccinations, physical exams, and other preventative care services. Providing this reassurance in a medically hesitant society will result in better health outcomes for these children, thus positively impacting their lives. The Smith and Moore Uplift Scholarship will allow me to afford the education needed to give back to my community, aligning me with the non-profit’s mission to change lives and increase the quality of life. Your financial support would provide additional time for me to gain clinical experience at hospitals and community centers near my college institution. I am fueled to make healthcare a promise for all, not a right for some. Your investment in my journey will bring me purpose to provide safer and more accessible healthcare, one child at a time.
