My name is Morgan Berg, and I am from Vancouver, Washington. I graduated from high school in 2021. My junior year presented a significant challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic moved all learning online. As a result, I completed both my junior and senior years through an online program. This transition was difficult for me because I am a hands-on learner; however, through hard work and perseverance, I was able to graduate with my class after two long years of remote learning. Although this experience was challenging, I am grateful for it because it helped me recognize that I learn best in hands-on, practical environments that require teamwork and collaboration, and these qualities are essential as a trade worker. After high school, I moved to Hawaii to be closer to my sister and her family. While living there, I worked at a preschool as a teacher’s aide and substitute teacher. This experience was incredibly formative—it taught me patience, humility, and, most importantly, the value of contributing to something greater than myself. I believe that same principle lies at the heart of working in the trades. I am currently 23 years old and enrolled in a program that will prepare me to earn my Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) license. The program I am in is an accelerated course. Because of this, I am developing the same skills and knowledge in one year that are typically completed in two. This program requires focus, discipline, and the ability to quickly apply what I am learning in real time, which aligns closely with my preferred learning style. My interest in aviation began at a young age, influenced in part by my grandfather, who served in the Air Force and was responsible for aircraft maintenance at the base he was stationed at in Texas, followed by North Carolina. My grandfather was extremely proud of his service in the Air Force, and his pride helped shape my appreciation for the critical role mechanics play in aviation. I chose this path because I am passionate about aviation and believe the mechanical side is just as essential as piloting, even if it is often less recognized. The trades are vital to everyday life, and I am both excited and honored to be part of this field. My goal is to excel in my program, become AMT certified, and pursue a career with a major airline as an aviation maintenance technician. Although women make up only about 2.5–3% of AMTs worldwide, I am determined to demonstrate to myself others that gender does not define capability, and that I can lead and succeed in this industry alongside my fellow hardworking colleagues.
