Ever since I was a child, I've been captivated by technology. My initial interactions with it invloved playing video games, on a Nintendo 64 to be exact, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that technology was much more than just a source of entertainment or convenience. It is an ever-evolving field with the transformative power to alter the way we live, work, and even think. My fascination for technology has not merely been about the cool gadgets but about the profound impact it can have on humanity.
My academic journey has been a testament to this passion. I chose to pursue degrees in Industrial & Systems Engineering and Computational Science & Engineering because these disciplines epitomize the multiplicity and versatility of technology. They are not just about building things; they are about optimizing systems, analyzing complexities, and solving real-world problems. These fields enable me to delve deep into the intricacies of various aspects of technology, from coding algorithms to simulating complex systems and even exploring the ethical considerations of technological advancements.
While my love for technology started with a fascination for machines, it has now evolved into an appreciation for its potential as a problem-solving tool. My internships across different sectors, including cloud computing at Microsoft and improving user experience at Disney Streaming, have provided me with a broad lens to view the applications of technology. These experiences have expanded my understanding of the intricate webs that technology weaves in different industries, whether it’s enhancing user experience in media, fortifying security measures in cloud computing, or optimizing supply chain management in manufacturing.
What excites me most is the potential technology has to create lasting social impact. The applications of technology in sectors like healthcare, for instance, can be revolutionary. Telemedicine, AI-powered diagnostic tools, and wearable health monitors can democratize healthcare delivery, making it accessible to even the most remote corners of the world. Similarly, technology has the power to make education more inclusive, with e-learning platforms and virtual classrooms bridging the gap between education systems in communities of varying economies.
The more I delve into the field, the more I realize how much there is to learn and explore. I am particularly interested in the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning into everyday applications to make them more efficient, intelligent, and user-friendly. These cutting-edge technologies have the potential to redefine the way we interact with the world around us, and I aspire to be at the forefront of these innovations to push society forward while maintaining the well-being of consumers.
In summary, my passion for technology stems from a profound belief in its capacity to make the world a better place. It’s a field that never ceases to amaze, surprise, and inspire—and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in the years to come.
Girls Ready to Empower Girls
The summer sun had already dipped below the horizon, yet the office lights remained switched on, casting a warm glow across the room. I sat hunched over my laptop, combing through lines of code and juggling multiple tabs, a typical evening in the CEED office on campus. But that night was anything but ordinary; I was stuck on an insurmountable problem. Just as I was about to close my laptop in frustration, Dr. J, Assistant Dean and director of the College of Engineering, walked in. She had already logged long hours and had every reason to head home as she had a two-hour commute, but there she was, offering a genuine smile and an open ear.
Dr. J wasn’t just school administration; she was a mentor and a role model. A seasoned professional with an uncanny ability to balance technical expertise with emotional intelligence, she was one of the few women in a male-dominated field who had climbed the ranks with grace and grit. She sat down beside me and listened as I explained my dilemma. Instead of providing a quick solution, Angela guided me through the thought process, asking probing questions that made me think critically. Within an hour, not only had the problem been resolved, but I had also gained a new perspective on problem-solving—one that textbooks and lectures had never taught me.
Her mentorship didn’t end with academic guidance. Dr.J was a beacon of support when it came to navigating the intricacies of PWI dynamics and building a career path in STEM. She understood the unique challenges I faced as a Black female college student aspiring to make a mark in the world. Her candid advice on how to handle microaggressions, advocate for myself, and build a robust professional network were lessons that could not be found in any training module. More than once, Dr. J recognized my contributions on campus, highlighting my efforts and ensuring they didn’t go unnoticed. This boosted my confidence and facilitated my integration into Georgia Tech as a transfer student.
One of the most profound lessons Dr. J imparted was the significance of giving back to the community. She was actively involved in mentorship programs to encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM. This resonated deeply with me and influenced my involvement in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where I led initiatives that echo the same ethos. Dr. J's commitment to lifting others as she climbed made me realize that a successful career is not just about achieving personal milestones; it's also about creating pathways for others to succeed.
As I approach the culmination of my academic journey and stand on the cusp of entering the workforce full-time, the lessons and support I've received from Dr. J continue to serve as an invaluable guide. She taught me that academic brilliance must go hand-in-hand with ethical responsibility and community outreach. I aim to emulate her holistic approach to career development, aspiring to excel in my field and inspire and support others, particularly young women of color in STEM.
While I have had several mentors and guides in my life, Dr. J stands out as a monumental figure who has significantly impacted my career trajectory. Her mentorship has been a linchpin in my professional and personal development, inspiring me to aim for excellence while staying grounded in empathy and community service.
