Gabriella Carter Failure Doesn't Define Me Scholarship
Many might not consider leaving an upper-middle-income country to live in a high-income country a failure, but I do. Born and raised upon till the age of 13, I learned to love the little island of Jamaica very dearly. Jamaica was not only my home town but also the only place I ever resided in until 2017. I can now say that moving to Florida is slowly becoming beneficial for both me and my educational needs. What I describe as my failure has helped me to become a better person, helped me to get closer to figuring out my future goals, and also helped me to have a wider perspective of the world we live in today. To start, it is not easy to move from one place to another in a short matter of time. I lost many friends on the way, some of which I knew for years. Coming to Florida helped me to become a better person because of the new environment I entered. The people who I first met were not the example of nice. I was laughed at because of how I dressed and spoke. As was mentioned before, the transition was not easy because I was not aware of what to expect or how to act. Floridians and Jamaicans sound different because of Jamaica's broken English. By ninth grade, I quickly forced myself to adapt to the new language so that I would fit in. This made me a stronger person in certain situations now that I know not to always expect positivity. I can now handle situations better. In addition to becoming a better person, I later started to try and figure out my life goals. I searched for bigger and better opportunities for myself. I now make sure I am actively involved in anything that positively impacts my grades and future education, for example, this scholarship. I try my hardest to make the best of my situation. What I mean by this is that I complete every assignment I am given and on top of that, I decided to take two extra classes online which in the future will result in me receiving an extra credit. Thirdly, because of the shift in countries, I am now accustomed to two different ways of living. I believe my situation has given me a wider perspective of what the world is really about. Maybe because I grew up in Jamaica, I never noticed how much issues everyone around me faced. It can simply be from the minor problem of lack of resources in a community to the major problem of racism. This has helped me to understand how blessed I am. In conclusion, I am very thankful for the failure of leaving my home country because it has opened up many new windows of advantages. It has influenced me to focus more on my academics and get a head start towards my future. I hope to continue to work hard and aim for the stars.
