Obtaining a Ph.D. Who is Mona Abdellatif? Mona Abdellatif became an influential educator, who sought to carve out her place in wider society with only the wind (the Holy Spirit, Jibreel) to guide her. Mona’s upbringing sprung forth out of humble means as an orphan of Arab origin coming from a small town noted for Jaycees Fishing Pier in Texas City, Texas. The tranquility of the illustrious Jaycees had gained international notoriety for being the largest fishing pier in the world. As Abdellatif began to embark on her new career, she credited her successes with resulting from a higher power, namely - God. On the authority of God and the universe, Abdellatif acknowledged she had been called to be a career teacher who sincerely desired to make a difference in the lives of learners. Therefore, this academic believes obtaining a Ph.D. will increase this educator’s knowledge, skills, and training in educational content and in-depth research equipped with problem solving ability to lead staff and students towards success. Education Abdellatif graduated in the top ten at the University of Houston – Clear Lake (like she did in high school) as the only minority to attend her bachelor graduation ceremony - in December 1990. As an adopted child, Abdellatif had been the first high school and college graduate with honors holding a Bachelor in Elementary Education all subjects grades 1 through 8 and Reading English Language K through 12. As the scholar followed the footsteps of her astronaut mentor from NASA and became known for writing high stakes testing for the state of Texas: Teams, TAAS, and TAKS. Abdellatif strived for student achievement and excellence earning her the Enron’s Highest Student Achievement Teacher Award later that same year. This academician became suited for teaching in America’s disproportionate schools on the brink of closure and institutions noted for having the highest income per capita in other cities. Professional Experiences Abdellatif served on site-based management teams to develop School Improvement Plans to promote higher learning outcomes. The educator coordinated an ESL Adult Education Program under the Barbara Bush Grant for parents who were non - native English speakers. Later that same year, the superintendent of the district recruited Abdellatif for the Curriculum Alignment Team to create Content Area Reading lessons for Reading Language Arts, Math, and Science, using the IBM program database for the district. Work Abroad Abdellatif worked in Saudi Arabia teaching English for six years. At that time, the graduate student sought a master’s program to position herself for an exciting and rewarding career in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Curriculum Instruction and in 2015. As the graduate student reminisces, she finds the most rewarding teaching moments trumped, when she developed curriculum materials for non-native English-speakers to accommodate English learners from other nationalities. The educator maintains a stern commitment towards building learners’ language acquisition for lifelong learning in academic English. This component happens to be crucial to student success. Future Goals Abdellatif’s future goals consist of raising high school English students’ SAT scores. The novice has acquired teaching experience with preparing students for European tests such as the Aptis, IELTS, KET and PET exams in Saudi Arabia. Texas Women Empowerment Scholarship
Holistic Solutions to Assist Women This academician became a social worker for 6 years and sought holistic solutions to assist women in dealing with disproportionality: hunger, inadequate healthcare, and housing. As a social worker, I sought to protect the unprotected children and families. No matter how much I attempted to rectify the experience of empowering women to assert their lives to the fullest the situation seemed less than favorable for them. Resolving to reckon with the fact that women can be depraved from lack of family and community support. For this reason, to deal with the issue of hunger the investigator transported them to the food stamp office to follow up on their applications. This family educator took it upon herself to visit food banks and Bear rooms to obtain formula, groceries, and vouchers to assist them. For instance, many young single mothers need counseling, parenting classes, and substance abuse counseling to adequately address the systemic cycle of maltreatment and domestic violence. For these women many services are available to stabilize mothers to transition them to become gainfully employed. As a social worker, my duties included assisting mothers with finding utility bill support, food insecurity support, moratorium support, and transportation support. This worker encountered single parents in poverty between the ages 18- 40 due to the lack of resources and career development. In many cases, this academic gave emotional support lending a listening ear in which parents had opportunities to talk about their feelings regarding life’s challenges and experiences. Inequalities in healthcare persist in areas most disproportionate in wider society. To deal with inadequate healthcare, I transported women to clinics, and hospitals. In addition, I sought over the counter medication from the Bear Room. Lastly, this scholar sought housing for clients through meeting with family members, friends, and women shelters. By way of illustration, I visited one grandmother that had become the guardian of her grandchild in a Dayton prison system. This academic had to seek another placement or living arrangement for the children with another family member. As I reminisce on trying to educate women on how to save their families, I offered them peaceful resolves with formidable solutions to life changing events, in which their lives were threatened with domestic violence, hunger, imprisonment, and substance abuse. I had deep burning desire to give them much needed resources to resolve their life’s dilemmas such as food, clothing, and shelter. This social worker desired to remove the safety threats that they had to succumb too. In short, this social worker sought holistic solutions to assist women in dealing with disproportionality: hunger, inadequate healthcare, and housing. In my opinion, the situation has worsened in countries where teenage pregnancy or child marriage is widely accepted shortens a women’s life span carrying high risks to early death. The problem of gender-based discrimination persists in situations where misogynistic attitudes and sexist policies constrain women from having autonomy over their personal bodies or wealth. Even after 100 years of the 19th Amendment, women suffrage activists stood in gaps gathering in public to bring about change and equality. Because of their devotion to the cause of women suffrage, women can now vote. In my view, voting is where the problem prefaces and where the premise of the argument continues. We as women can bring about change through voting for compassionate and empathetic political officials to bring change for the prosperity and development of wider society.
