Wailing filled my ears, and I felt my entire body relax because I knew the baby was okay. Seconds ago, I was suctioning his nose and mouth, rubbing his back, and silently begging him to make any type of noise. I had just delivered a baby boy on the side of the highway with my paramedic partner, and I was filled with pure exhilaration and terror. There is truly nothing life the gift of life, and while I have always fully believed myself to be Pro-Life, I don't think I understood how important that was until I experienced a live birth. Watching the color come in to the baby boy's face and hearing his mother's cries of relief as we told her that her child was fine changed something inside of me. From that moment on, I knew that I would push for the protection of unborn babies for the rest of my life. My faith has been the foundation that has allowed me to understand and respond to critical moments in the lives of the people around me. I have been working as an Emergency Medical Technician for the past three years. During my time in this field, I have encountered major adversity and countless emergencies that have required me to feel steady and grounded, and my faith has given me that ability. It reminds me of the inherent dignity of every human life and the importance of compassion over judgment. Because of my faith and my experiences, I now know that being pro-life is not simply about a belief, but about a responsibility to love, support, and advocate for others. My drive to protect my patients’ lives and do everything that I can to ensure the future lives of all children has led me down the path to becoming an OB/Gyn. I have been accepted to medical school beginning in the fall of 2026, and I plan on learning how to care for both mother and child, particularly in high-risk or unexpected situations. I want to be a physician who provides comprehensive care, offering medical expertise, emotional support, and access to resources that empower women to choose life. My pro-life values call me not only to protect unborn children, but also to advocate for the well-being of their mothers before, during, and after pregnancy. Ultimately, my faith informs both my purpose and my path forward. I plan to use my education to advocate for policies and practices that support life at all stages by working towards expanding access to prenatal care, strengthening support systems for mothers and families, and ensuring that no one faces pregnancy or parenthood alone. The moment I heard that baby cry on the side of the highway will stay with me forever. It is a reminder that every life, no matter how small or fragile, is worthy of protection, dignity, and love, and I will carry Natalie Joy Poremski’s legacy with me.
