Heart of Service Scholarship – In Memory of Officer Katelyn Tully
In every aspect of my life, I strive to be a dedicated, responsible, and mature individual. By committing myself to the highest standards with regards to my academics, I believe this not only represents my intelligence but also showcases my ability to stay disciplined and evolve in my ability to learn and try new things. Throughout my high school career, I have constantly challenged myself to take on and excel in rigorous courses. I believe these academic pursuits have prepared me for my transition to my future college where I will continue my passion for learning and excellence. Through my experience as a Haverhill citizen, I have been able to involve myself in aiding my community. I have always been deeply involved in the Haverhill community. Whether it be attending or working at the Farmer’s Market, I have loved seeing familiar faces every week or attending River Ruckus in the fall. Within the Haverhill High School walls, I have taken part in volunteering through Interact Club. While serving in the club, I have been able to directly assist my surroundings through neighborhood cleanups and various other endeavors. I have continued my service efforts this year by helping wrap presents for children in the community and created hand-written cards for those in senior homes during the holiday season. Additionally, I have continued my service my senior year through organizations such as the National Honors Society (NHS), Science NHS, World Language NHS, and Rho Kappa NHS. Throughout my life and high school career, I have been able to expand my leadership abilities through student council, my swim team, and teaching swim lessons. These organizations that I have been a part of have helped me grow and develop my preparedness with innovating and calling for action. For example, when I first joined the student council, I would simply observe meetings and take in what others were saying without contributing any of my ideas. However, throughout my years, I found myself constantly contributing to ideas and facilitating action, without being nervous to raise my hand like I previously was. I now serve as president, guiding the meetings and facilitating others’ ideas, especially if they are apprehensive to contribute at first. As Captain of the Haverhill High Swim team, I was able to lead such an extraordinary group of girls, which ended the season undefeated and North Sectional Champions. Similarly, teaching swim lessons at Bradford Swim club has taught me how to be creative, resourceful, and most of all, adaptive to the kids' wants and needs. Dealing with kids ranging from 10 months old to 11 isn’t always easy, but by learning from others, I have been able to pass down my swimming knowledge to the next generation. It has been an honor to be able to help kids to be a safe and skilled swimmer. Katelyn was such a light in the Haverhill community. Thank you for carrying on her legacy and for considering me for this scholarship.
