Opticianry science is my passion. I want not only to ensure my patients best quality of vision to impact their quality of life. I want to specialize not only in low vision patients, but in helping those who may be living with blindness in one eye. This can affect the look of the eye and the symmetry of the whole face. Living with this can affect their confidence, social interactions, their confidence in building and maintaining personal relationships, the types of employment they seek and even lifestyle. With the correct application and use of spherocylindrical lenses, prisms, BC, and lens materials it is possible to manipulate the appearance of the blinded eye to make it appear more symmetrical with the rest of the face. Helping them not only to see their best, but to feel and look their best. This seemingly small but noticeable change can help a patient to have more confidence in their appearance, and that confidence can, in turn, feed their confidence in all other aspects of their life thus giving a much bigger impact on their life then they may have previously believed that a pair of glasses could. I intend to return to the classroom and teach opticianry science one day. This program has had such a significant impact on my life that I want to be able to help others to discover a love of optics. Like myself, there are many who have been working as unlicensed professionals for many years. Degree programs like this give us the opportunity to expand our skills and understanding in the field we are currently working in and love. I want to help others like me who have always believed that licensure is out of their reach to achieve their dreams. I want to help students to find a specialization in this profession, whether it is low vision, fitting contacts or anything else they can dream of, that they can be equally passionate about. I am an advocate for the profession and degree programs that spearhead training and licensure and will to do throughout my career. What we do is an important and necessary skill. However, many states are currently unlicensed and those that are face the constant threat of losing licensure. It is important to advocate for our profession and the programs that help to ensure the highest level of training and education for the next generation of opticians as well as promote the profession son that other can see it value and consider making it a career.
