Writing has always been a formative part of my life. I first began writing when I was in middle school, mostly dabbling in fanfiction as a way to explore what I was already familiar with. But as I got older, I began writing more original work as a way to explore new worlds and experiences. For me, writing has always been a way to deepen my own experiences in life and I want to share that with others through my writing career. I've read so many stories by talented writers that have touched me deeply and allowed me to broaden my horizons as well as my point of view. I want to be able to do the same for other readers and writers, to not only give them a story that moves them but also inspires them. Ultimately, I feel like all good stories should strike a chord in their audience. No matter how trivial a story may seem, there will always be someone whom it has impacted. To name an example, minorities are often under- or even misrepresented in the media, and having fictional minority characters can make a huge difference to both children and adults alike. There will always be people who feel as though they are alone partly because they never see themselves in stories, and that is something else I want to do through my writing. No one should ever have to feel unseen or unheard.

If I were a highly influential figure, I would choose to stand for civil rights. Looking around at society today, there are so many tragic things that happen in America every day, especially to minority groups. Ranging from police brutality, racism, sexism, anti-immigration sentiments, and other issues, America is often hostile to its minorities despite presenting itself as a country of great opportunity. Even from just looking at the news, there is no shortage of cruelty happening on the streets, or in businesses, or even in people's own local communities. And all too often, people turn a blind eye to it or even excuse it. We will claim that poor people should just "work harder" rather than reach out and help them; we would rather believe that black people bring about their own death by police force than admit an inherent issue in the police system; we would even act like immigrants don't belong here even when technically, no one else does either except the Native Americans. Although the US has made plenty of strides when it comes to civil rights, that doesn't mean there aren't still ways that our country can improve. Many of the issues I listed are systematic, and it's about time that we as a people realized our own faults and worked to better ourselves and our country.

To me, independence isn't just being able to fend for yourself, nor is it just being able to rely on your abilities and skills. Rather, it's being able to do those things but also knowing when to rely on others. While it is important to be able to care for yourself while not being so dependent on other people to fulfill your needs and do things for you, ultimately you cannot do everything on your own. After all, humans are social creatures, and we are made to live in communities rather than entirely on our own. Being independent doesn't just mean doing things on your own to support yourself, but taking the initiative to help others and build other people up, at the same time knowing when to set your own boundaries.

Words can be more than just letters on a page or on a screen; they can truly transport you somewhere else, even if only for a short period of time. Words have always been important to me since even just the smallest change in a sentence can make a difference in how an entire paragraph is perceived - or even an entire page, or an entire book. The words we choose to use in our everyday lives don't just impact those we talk to, but those that our peers talk to as well. They might pass on what we say to someone else, even if what we said was through text or email rather than verbally. Whatever we might say or write down goes down the line, creating a butterfly effect that has no foreseeable end. I believe that this includes our creative writing as well. Just look at series like Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones, or any other widely-known series that has had such an impact on people that most would likely recognize them just from the title. While I know it's not likely that I may not write anything quite of the same magnitude, what I hope to accomplish through studying creative writing is to make at least one difference in someone's life, even if it's a small one. With everything going on in the world right now - from COVID-19 to the various tragedies occurring not just in the 2020s, but in the 21st century at large - I feel that it is our fiction that can help us through any dark times we may face.

These are pictures of my Maltipoo, Marley! The pictures are of when we first got him in November of 2017, and later the same year at Christmastime. When we got him from the poodle rescue by our house, he had been rescued from Hurricane Harvey and had skin issues + an ear infection due to being caught out in the hurricane. Even though the rescue put out ads for whoever owned Marley, whoever previously owned him didn't claim him, and we ended up adopting him after meeting a few other dogs at the rescue!
