When I was young, l used to stop street sellers to offer them water and shade. My mother says she was always worried that I might get kidnapped or worse, killed, but that the kindness I showed at such a young aged always amazed her. I must have been around the age of 4 when I started gaining consciousness and realized that people, as imperfect as we are, have a kind and good side to them. Mine was so worrisome to my parents that they prohibited me from ever offering water to the old ice pop man that passed by my street, but that never stopped me, if anything it made the person I am today with a heart to help others while being safe about it. Around my teenage years I started to become reckless towards my safety, not because I was partying but because as a transmigrant; person who crosses the border into the United States daily from a different country, I always had the risk of possibly getting kidnapped or shot (safety wasn't great in Mexico at the time). I remember I helped this lady by getting in her vehicle so she could get the bottles of liquor for her wedding into Mexico from the duty free store. Didn't think much of it and just saw a bride wanting to have her perfect wedding despite the safety concerns at the time. Throughout my life I've showed a similar pattern and tend to help those who just want their day made, those who may need a smile, an I love you, and extra person or just a cold glass of water to make it through the day. I would like to believe it affects others in a positive way that makes them want to do good unto others as well, but, I believe it is me that it affects the most by giving me the drive to continue to do good, put smiles on people's faces. And reap the rewards that come from positive reaffirmation. I have heard from my friends that what I do for them, whether it'd be big or small, really does help them move forward and gives them the energy, drive, assurance and motivation to keep holding on and moving forward because they know they have got someone in their corner that makes them feel reassure that everything is going to be just fine. Ever since I was a child, and now as an adult, i wanted to believe that that man I used to give water to was happy, that the woman got her happy ending, and that I could become someone reliable for those in need. Never in a million years did I imagine my friends would consider me a good example or take my words and actions to heart. Also, to be very brutally honest, I never expected to write something like this but here we are. Acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, can change a person's whole view of their surroundings, help them manage, and can even change their whole perspective positively.
