For the first time in my fifty years of life, I finally belong to myself. As a mother at fifteen, my life’s path was defined by necessity, sacrifice, and the absolute prioritization of everyone but myself. Over the years, I raised my sons, gained custody of my younger siblings, and worked tirelessly—often balancing two jobs—to keep my family afloat. Along the way, I spent over two decades building hands-on expertise in bookkeeping and financial administration, most recently managing state and federal funding budgets for a low-income junior high school. Four years ago, my youngest son joined the Marines, my nest emptied, and a painful divorce upended the life I thought I knew. Instead of letting the dust settle, I chose to rebuild. Today, I am an empty-nester doing big things, pursuing my accounting degree to secure a higher professional baseline and invest in my own worth. For me, accounting is not just about numbers; it is a tool for empathy, equity, and sustainability. I view the balance sheet as a way to protect resources for underprivileged youth, champion fiscal transparency in education, and spearhead green, paperless initiatives that reduce environmental waste. I am putting in the long hours and hard work now to eliminate my need for a second job, return to community volunteering, and secure a peaceful retirement spent with my sons and their families. I am living proof that it is never too late to rewrite your story, claim your education, and invest in your future.
