As an African American male, I am pursuing a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling because I understand, from the inside, what happens when mental illness goes unnamed and unaddressed. My father, a Vietnam veteran, came home carrying PTSD and a substance use disorder that no one around him had the language or resources to treat. That untreated pain became domestic violence and fractured our family. At eight, and again at thirty, I attempted to take my own life, carrying wounds from that instability, molestation, a failed marriage, chronic illness, homelessness, and substance use that I did not yet have the tools to heal. I survived, but for decades I did not truly live. That history is not a footnote to my decision to enter this field; it is the reason for it. My work in Social Services, as a Medical Case Manager at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and, currently, a QMHS Case Manager in substance use disorder treatment, has shown me the same pattern from another angle. I watched clients stabilize, then fall back into crisis, because the systems meant to help offered resources without addressing the trauma underneath. When I began a Master of Social Work program, I believed I was simply advancing my career. The pandemic revealed something deeper: isolation forced me to confront pain I had spent a lifetime avoiding, and my own struggles intensified. When I searched for a counselor during that time, I discovered that only about 6 percent of therapists are African American, and even fewer are men. It took reading the story of the man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5, and hearing Jesus’s question, “Wilt thou be made whole?”, for me to answer honestly for the first time. That moment redirected my path from social work into clinical mental health counseling, where I could become the kind of counselor I could not easily find. On October 10, 2025, I accepted my own addiction and committed to recovery. Today, active in my Cocaine Anonymous fellowship, serving as treasurer of one home group and assisting with Hospital and Institutions meetings for men in Partial Hospitalization Programs, I practice what I hope to offer professionally: honesty, structure, and the understanding that healing is a lifestyle. I am completing this degree at 48, as a first-generation student with a 4.0 grade point average, while working full-time and caring for my live-in 73-year-old mother, who lives with depression. I intend to make a difference as a Licensed Professional Counselor supporting men, particularly men of color, facing mental health challenges and substance use disorder, with clinical competence and genuine cultural and spiritual sensitivity. I plan to pursue a Master of Divinity alongside this degree to serve people in secular and faith-based settings alike, since many struggle to reconcile treatment with their spiritual beliefs. My long-term goal is to either open a nonprofit transitional living facility, Brother 2 Brother, offering safe housing, mentorship, education, job readiness, and recreation for young men facing mental health challenges, judicial involvement, and instability, or to serve directly as an LPC, giving men who look like me the representation and structured care I once needed and could rarely find. Ultimately, I am pursuing this degree because I know what it costs a family when no one is available to help someone become whole. My own healing has shown me recovery is possible, and I want to extend that possibility to others whose stories mirror my own, so they do not have to wait as long as I did to be made whole.

I did not choose the nonprofit sector so much as I was raised in it. They fall through because no system was built to catch them. Nonprofit work exists in that gap, and I have spent my career and my life living in that gap. My professional path in Social Services confirmed what my childhood already taught me. As a Medical Case Manager at the AIDS Taskforce and now, as a QMHS Case Manager in substance use disorder treatment, I have watched clients cycle through crisis, stabilize briefly, and fall back because the support around them disappeared the moment a program ended. I want a career in the nonprofit sector because it is the space where care does not stop at a diagnosis, discharge, or release date. It is where mission, not margin, drives the work, and where someone like my father, or someone like me at eight years old, could actually be caught before they hit the ground. That conviction is why I want to build a nonprofit transitional living facility called Brother 2 Brother, for young men who have struggled with mental health challenges, judicial involvement, and instability. I know what it is to grow up in a home destabilized by untreated PTSD and substance use disorder, and I know how few safe, structured spaces exist for young men trying to break that cycle before it repeats. Brother 2 Brother would offer transitional, safe housing paired with mentorship, educational tutoring, trade training, volunteer opportunities, job-readiness support, and recreation, giving young men room to grow and heal away from the triggering, negative environments that so often pull them back in. It is not just shelter. It is stabilization, structure, and brotherhood built around the belief that these young men are not their worst moments or their court records. I plan to use my Social Work background and Clinical Mental Health Counseling education, alongside my ministerial calling, to make Brother 2 Brother a place where evidence-based, trauma-informed practice meets genuine cultural understanding and spiritual support. I want residents to receive real clinical care for trauma, addiction, and mental health, not just a bed and a curfew. My caregiving experience with my mother, who lives with depression, has taught me the patience and consistency that healing actually requires, and I intend to bring that same steadiness into this work. I hope my career creates impact in two directions at once: individually, by helping young men rebuild identity, stability, and purpose instead of returning to the environments that harmed them, and systemically, by proving that culturally competent, faith-informed, clinically sound programs can reduce recidivism, homelessness, and untreated mental illness in communities that are chronically underserved. Every young man who leaves Brother 2 Brother with a trade, a support system, and a sense of his own worth is one less person cycling through the systems I have spent my career working inside. I am pursuing this path because I know both sides of the gap, the falling and the catching. The nonprofit sector lets me build the structure I needed as a child but did not always have, so that other young men do not have to wait forty years, as I did, to be made whole.

My life has been shaped by trauma, resilience, and a deepening faith, and these experiences fuel my commitment to serve marginalized communities, especially people of color and African American men, who often carry their pain in silence. Growing up, I saw firsthand how stigma, racism, and mistrust of institutions create barriers to care in Black communities. My own struggles with mental health taught me how quickly shame can take root and how rare it is to find a space where one is believed, respected, and understood. Surviving abuse and exposure to substance use showed me that healing requires more than insight; it requires cultural understanding, spiritual sensitivity, and a safe, consistent relationship. My journey has also made me deeply aware of the lack of representation in the mental health field. Black clinicians make up a small percentage of the workforce, and Black men represent an even smaller fraction. In many settings, Black male counselors account for as little as 4% of providers. This means countless Black clients who want a therapist who looks like them or understands their lived experience simply cannot find one. Knowing this, I view my presence in this field as both a calling and a responsibility. Becoming a Black male counselor is not just a career goal; it is a response to a critical gap in care. My advocacy extends to individuals in recovery, particularly men navigating trauma, substance use, and stigma. As a former Medical Case Manager at the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, I supported individuals diagnosed with HIV who often faced overlapping stigma related to race, sexuality, and illness. That role taught me the importance of nonjudgmental, trauma‑informed care and the need to protect clients’ dignity in the face of discrimination. I have also worked alongside people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and developmental disabilities, recognizing how these challenges intersect and reinforce one another. These experiences strengthened my belief that effective counseling must address both personal healing and the structural injustices shaping clients’ lives. Faith remains central in my life. I understand that many in Black communities turn first to pastors and spiritual practices when facing mental health challenges, even as some have experienced spiritual misuse or religious trauma. Because of this, I want to be both clinically competent and spiritually attuned, honoring each person’s faith foundation while navigating its complexities. My goal is to integrate a strong spiritual grounding with multicultural, evidence‑based counseling so clients can experience holistic care. To prepare for this work, I plan to complete my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and then pursue a Master of Divinity. This dual path will allow me to bridge counseling and ministry, offering culturally responsive, theologically informed care. I hope to collaborate with churches, shelters, recovery programs, and community organizations to provide trauma‑informed, faith‑integrated services to those who have been historically underserved. My journey into Christianity began long before I understood the meaning of salvation or the depth of God's love. As a young child, my mother and I attended Cleveland Church of Christ, a COOLJC congregation known for vibrant worship and a strong sense of community. I can still picture myself in the children's choir, wearing my shorts set and bow tie, proudly beating my tambourine as if it were the heartbeat of the entire service. Those early experiences planted seeds of faith in me, even though I was too young to understand how deeply they would take root. Our attendance was interrupted when my father, who battled PTSD, addiction, and alcoholism, prohibited us from going to what he called the "holy roller" church. His struggles created instability and fear in our home, and for years, the church became something distant, something I longed for but could not access. Yet even in that absence, the memory of worship, community, and God's presence stayed with me. It was not until my senior year of high school that I returned to church on my own. A friend from Acapella Choir invited me to Jonas Temple Church of God in Christ, a vibrant Pentecostal‑Holiness congregation with a thriving youth department. The atmosphere was alive with music, mentorship, and genuine love. Through consistent Bible teaching and the guidance of youth leaders, my heart began to soften. On January 29, 1995, the Lord pricked my heart, and I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior. That moment marked the beginning of my spiritual transformation. A few months later, during a Sunday night prayer service, I experienced the infilling of the Holy Ghost, and my life shifted in ways I could not have imagined. However, my journey was not without struggle. When I left for college, I was unprepared for the temptations and challenges that awaited me. I faltered many times, making choices that contradicted my faith and values. Over the years, I experienced a failed marriage, seasons of riotous living, substance use, and a period when I turned away from God and my calling. In my lowest moment, I believed my life had no worth and attempted to end it. Though I survived, I carried deep shame and brokenness. While living in Chicago, someone invited me to King of Glory Tabernacle, Church of God in Christ. There, I rededicated my life to the Lord, though I still struggled with guilt from my past. One Sunday night at the altar, a woman whispered Romans 8:1 in my ear: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." In that moment, the Lord lifted the shame that had weighed me down for years. My faith was restored, and my purpose became clearer. My career aspirations grew directly from my faith and my lived experiences. After returning home to Cleveland, OH, I completed my bachelor's degree in Behavioral Sciences and began a master's program in Social Work. During the pandemic, I sought counseling for my own mental health and discovered how difficult it was to find a counselor of color, especially a Black male counselor. That realization awakened a calling within me. In 2025, I pivoted my path and began pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My goal is to become a Licensed Professional Counselor and later pursue a Master of Divinity at Pentecostal Theological Seminary. As an ordained Elder in the Church of God in Christ, I want to integrate the foundations of Christian faith with evidence‑based counseling practices to serve both secular and faith‑based communities. Many in the Black church still view counseling as a sign of weakness or spiritual failure, yet healing requires attention to mind, body, and spirit. This scholarship will help remove financial barriers created by recent federal funding limitations for counseling programs. After our home was burglarized, my mother worked two jobs so we could move into a safer neighborhood, refusing to let fear define our future. My grandmother nurtured my mind with equal determination, teaching me how to write in script when I was in kindergarten; an early advantage that reflected her belief in my potential. Their sacrifices and guidance laid the foundation for the man I would become. Yet my early years were also marked by trauma that I carried silently for decades. One of the most defining moments of my childhood occurred when my mother and I escaped from my domestically violent father. A Vietnam veteran, he struggled with PTSD, addiction, and alcoholism. As a child, I often accompanied him into adult environments I did not understand, sitting with my Superman ice cream while he disappeared into back rooms. Years later, I realized they were tied to his addiction. At home, his intoxication frequently turned into violence directed at my mother. She shielded me from the blows, becoming a barrier between his pain and my innocence. One night, she could not protect me, and a hit landed on my head. Although my father apologized, I believe that moment solidified my mother's resolve. The next morning, after he left for work, she woke me and told me we had to leave. Her bags were already packed. I wanted to bring my toys. My father always made sure I had every toy I asked for, but she told me I could take only one item. I chose a small plant I had grown from a seedling in a Styrofoam cup. I was six years old, yet that memory remains vivid at age forty‑eight. These experiences created trauma that followed me into adulthood. As a Black male, I internalized low self‑image, insecurities, and unresolved hurt. I was never allowed to process what I had lived through. For years, I carried the emotional weight silently, believing that endurance was my only option. It was not until I began unpacking these experiences that I realized how deeply they shaped my identity and how many other men of color carry similar stories without support or validation. This realization ignited my purpose. I am now pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling because I want to fill the void in the mental health field for Black male professionals. Representation matters, especially for men who have been taught to suppress their pain, minimize their trauma, or navigate life without emotional safety. My goal is to create spaces where men like me, men who have survived trauma, silence, and expectation, can finally be seen, heard, and supported. This scholarship will allow me to continue my education and move closer to becoming the counselor I needed as a child and the advocate my community deserves. I am committed to transforming my pain into purpose and using my story to help others reclaim theirs.

I have built my professional life around the belief that dignity, stability, and hope form the foundation of recovery. As a graduate student in clinical counseling with deep experience in social services, I approach every role with empathy, structure, and purposeful action. Hello, my name is Willie James Hunter, Jr and I am a 48-year-old Black man and first-generation college student pursuing a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. It is my goal to become a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Being transparent, my life has been shaped by severe adversity: I survived child sexual abuse, grew up amid substance abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness for my mother and me. In my youth, I numbed the pain with self-harm, suicidal ideations, and attempts. Recognizing my powerlessness, I turned to God, whose faith gave me a framework to confront trauma, rebuild self-worth, and find the strength. The spiritual turning point, spark, my commitment to help others, and similar cycles. My background and social services equip me with advocacy, case coordination, and community resource navigation skills. Merging that professional foundation with my lived experience gives me a unique perspective that blends culture and empathy, is grounded in hardship, and offers insight into the systemic barriers faced by marginalized people. Between 2018 and 2022, I endured a cascade of losses! It started with my father's death in September 2018, followed by a family member dying each month for six months, and the isolating COVID pandemic while confined to a one-bedroom apartment with my mother. Prayer sustained me! However, during that time, I realized I needed a trusted listener or counselor. Searching for an African American male counselor revealed a stark scarcity: only 6.1% of counselors identify as Black men, underscoring the urgent need for representation. These experiences taught me that unresolved trauma affects identity and that culturally competent counseling can be a lifesaver. One change I would make to the mental healthcare system is to integrate faith practices with psychoanalytic and evidence-based treatment. My own Christian faith has been a source of healing and a foundation for wholeness. Yet, I have often found that a prayerful encounter with God or a higher power does not automatically equip me with the tools needed to process the traumatic events in my life. When I lacked those tools, I turned to substance issues, which only deepened my shame. Many of the wounds I carried were beyond the scope of my Pastor's expertise, leaving me with unresolved pain. I envision counseling as being an extension of ministry, one that honors a person's trust in a higher power while simultaneously providing access to proven therapeutic concepts. By incorporating spiritual resources, such as prayer, scripture, and fellowship with psycho, dynamic insight, trauma-informed techniques, we can address the mind, body, and soul cohesively. In my opinion, teletherapy's greatest strength is its ability to overcome geographic barriers. Teletherapy allows individuals living in rural areas, who may have mobility limitations or lack transportation, to connect with a counseling specialist. The gifting of teletherapy is that it can expand the pool of competent providers and make care feasible without a commute. However, a barrier is that mini underserved, low-income, or older adults experience a digital equity gap. Individuals who reside in rural areas often have unreliable broadband, and those who are economically disadvantaged may not have the equipment needed to engage in counseling care. This lack of accessibility ultimately leads to missed appointments, ineffective therapeutic care, and exclusion. To ensure that teletherapy is inclusive, the mental health system should partner with community centers, libraries, and schools to not only provide devices that enable access but also a private, safe place for the individual to receive teletherapy services. I believe addressing these areas will enable teletherapy to deliver superior, accessible mental health care to a diverse demographic.

Mental health is not just a field of study for me, it is a personal mission shaped by lived experience, resilience, and a deep desire to serve. I am a survivor of physical and sexual abuse, and rather than allowing trauma to define me, I’ve used it as fuel to pursue healing and purpose. My journey has taught me the power of transformation, and I am committed to helping others find that same strength. At 47, I made the courageous decision to return to graduate school after nearly completing my previous master’s program in Social Work. The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point. This realization led me to pivot myself from Social Work to Clinical Mental Health Counseling, driven by a renewed sense of calling. His struggle left a lasting impression and inspired my focus on addiction counseling. I am determined to become a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in Substance Use Disorder, offering trauma-informed, culturally responsive care to those who have been overlooked or underserved. I actively promote mental health awareness and wellness within both faith-based and secular communities by fostering open dialogue and encouraging access to care. One way I do this is by hosting informal discussions within my local congregation, where I share mental health resources and challenge the stigma surrounding counseling, especially within the African American community. My counseling degree is not only a professional pursuit but also a spiritual calling. I view this work as an extension of ministry, where faith and mental health are not in conflict but in harmony. Prayer has sustained me through distressing times, and I believe in its power to heal and uplift. However, I also recognize the need for practical tools and therapeutic strategies that empower individuals to navigate trauma, overcome social barriers, and reclaim their sense of agency. Ultimately, I am committed to being an agent of change, providing accessible, faith-informed, and culturally responsive mental health services to those who need it most. I want to offer not only understanding and compassion but also hope and guidance to those who may be experiencing similar struggles.
