My name is Emani Dalton, and I am a 24-year-old student working toward a career as a Medical Assistant. Recently, I moved away from my hometown for a fresh start and better opportunities. Starting over has not always been easy, but it has taught me independence, resilience, and the importance of believing in myself.
Over the years, I have worked in warehouse, retail, and delivery jobs. These positions were physically demanding, but they taught me valuable skills such as discipline, time management, teamwork, and responsibility. Most importantly, they taught me that success comes from consistency, hard work, and showing up even when things get tough.
As the oldest sibling, I want to be a positive role model for my brother and sister. I want them to see that it is possible to chase your goals, overcome challenges, and create a better future for yourself. By continuing my education, I hope to show them that it is never too late to invest in yourself and pursue your dreams.

The trade I am passionate about pursuing is becoming a Medical Assistant. For me, this career is much more than finding a job—it is about making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I have always enjoyed helping others, especially during stressful or frightening situations. I want to be someone who can comfort patients, make them feel heard, and help them receive the care they deserve. My personal experiences have shown me how important compassionate healthcare is, and they have inspired me to dedicate my future to this field.
In 2020, my life changed forever when my cousin unexpectedly passed away. She lived in an area where quality medical care was limited. After seeking help, she was sent home and told that everything was fine. Tragically, she had an aneurysm, and the warning signs were missed. Losing her was devastating. I fell into a deep depression because it was hard to understand how someone so young could be taken away after asking for medical help.
As I began healing, I learned even more about the incredible person my cousin was. At just 22 years old, she was on the Dean’s List, worked two jobs, was raising two children as a single mother, and had started her own business. She accomplished so much in such a short time, despite the challenges she faced. Learning about everything she had achieved inspired me to stop focusing only on my grief and instead honor her memory by pursuing a career where I could help others.
Her story gave me a new purpose. I realized that I want to be part of the healthcare field because everyone deserves access to quality medical care, no matter where they live. My goal is to become a Medical Assistant and eventually travel to underserved communities where healthcare resources are limited. I want to help bridge the gap by providing compassionate care, assisting healthcare providers, and ensuring that patients feel valued and supported. While I know I cannot change what happened to my cousin, I hope I can make a difference in someone else’s life by helping them receive the attention and care they need.
I also understand that many people feel nervous or anxious when visiting a doctor’s office. Whether it is fear of receiving bad news, discomfort with medical procedures, or simply not knowing what to expect, those emotions are real. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to remain calm and help others feel at ease. I want patients to know they are being listened to and cared for. Sometimes a kind smile, a reassuring conversation, or simply taking the time to listen can make a difficult experience much easier.
At 24 years old, I am determined to build a career that allows me to serve others while continuing to grow personally and professionally. Receiving this scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a Medical Assistant. It would ease the financial burden of my education and allow me to focus on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to care for others.
My cousin’s life and legacy continue to inspire me every day. Although her passing was heartbreaking, her determination, strength, and accomplishments motivate me to pursue my dreams with the same dedication she showed in hers. I hope to honor her memory by becoming a compassionate healthcare professional who makes patients feel safe, respected, and cared for. I believe that helping even one person receive the care they deserve would be a meaningful way to carry her legacy forward.
