Bio

My family history is deeply rooted in the lands of Alaska, where my grandfather's family settled in Chignik Lake and my grandmother's family settled in Aleknagik. They survived by living off the land, and their rich cultural heritage has been passed down through the generations, despite the challenges of cultural suppression and colonization. As a first-generation college student, I am proud to have achieved success, and I hope to inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams, overcome obstacles, and never give up on themselves. Thank you for taking the time to consider my story.

Camai, my name is Miquela Sampson, a nontraditional student at the University of Alaska Anchorage. As a first generation college student, my journey represents more than personal achievement it is a commitment to my family, my community, and the future I have worked hard to build. I often think back to my senior year of high school in 2010, when I stood at a crossroads, unsure whether I would join the military or pursue college, even though I knew I wanted to serve my village and community. I did raise my right hand on oath to the United States in the Alaska Air National Guard, and now I am working towards my first Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management. That purpose never left me, even as my path took longer than expected. Today, at 33 years old and celebrating five years of sobriety, I am in the final year of my collegiate career. My journey has not been linear, but it has been intentional, and every step has strengthened my commitment to giving back. My grandparents, Elliot and Elizabeth Lind from Chignik Lake and Aleknagik, have always been a source of strength for me. Their confidence in me, along with the memory of my great-great Auntie Mary's encouragement to stay in school, continues to guide my efforts. Through long days of studying, staying disciplined, and pushing through moments when I felt like giving up, I have developed resilience and a deeper understanding of my purpose. Achieving sobriety transformed my life, giving me the clarity and strength to pursue my education and long term goals. Since beginning my higher education in 2019, I have remained committed to my vision of starting a commercial aquaponics farm to serve rural Alaska. Recently, my academic journey has expanded to include interests in economics and data analytics, influenced by my professors and my desire to contribute to sustainable economic development in Alaska Native communities. These fields will help me build solutions that address food security and economic opportunity in rural areas. This year, I was selected as an apprentice artist under Leon Kinneeveauk through a Native Art course at UAA. Working with my hands, carving cedar feast bowls, beading, and building model qayaqs has reconnected me with my culture in a powerful way. This experience strengthened my identity and inspired me to preserve and share these traditions. I now see myself continuing this work by creating art and partnering with my fiancé to open a studio that showcases Alaska Native artists for both local communities and visitors. All of my passions, whether business, aquaponics, economics, or art, are connected through one goal: creating sustainable opportunities for Alaska Native communities. In the future, I envision operating an aquaponics farm that provides fresh food to rural Alaska while also contributing to economic growth and cultural preservation. I am deeply grateful for the support I may receive from this scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my education without financial burden and fully incest in my future. More importantly, it has strengthened my ability to serve as a role model and give back to my community. I am committed to using my education to support food sustainability, economic development, and cultural preservation, while honoring the legacy of those who came before me and creating opportunities for future generations.
