Hello! I am Emma, an aspiring Nurse who has interests in the arts, the outdoors, and all things nerdy. I believe in helping people holistically and aim to do so through my career in healthcare. Ever since my Grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson's/Alzheimer's, and now being able to work with Alzheimer's/Dementia residents at my current job, I understand the need for specialized compassionate healthcare. Hello, my name is Emma Miller, and I am an aspiring nurse. Ever since I was little, I have always been interested in helping people especially when they were sick or injured. My Grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and passed in 2012, 5 years after diagnosis, when I was 11 years old. Before her passing, I saw my Mom and all of the healthcare workers it took to help her through different treatments. I was there in the room when she passed, and heard her death rattles. Through all of this, all I could think of was 'How can I help?' and 'How can I make people feel better?'. Now is my chance to do something, by becoming a nurse. Later on, I saw my parents struggle as my Grandfather's condition worsened due to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. I saw his condition slowly deteriorating until he was no longer the man everyone loved and recognized. He was still my Grandpa, a man who I loved and looked up to, but when he looked at me, there was no recognition. I was 14, old enough to know something was wrong, but too young to truly understand what Alzheimer's does to the brain. In my Senior year of high school, my Mom was in a devastating car accident. A broken right wrist, multiple rib fractures, a disintegrated left knee, one med-evac helicopter ride, and many sleepless nights not knowing if she would make it or not. I still remember getting the frantic call from my Dad, and me, just getting my driver's license the year before, having to drive my younger brother to see her in the hospital. The hours upon hours of physical therapy she went through, and the daily struggles she still goes through just to keep her ability to walk has shown me a different side of health and recovery. All of these examples are not for sympathy but show that I am able to overcome the emotional side of working in healthcare. Behind every patient is a Grandma, Grandpa, a Mother and wife, a person who needs help, and a family who needs support. I believe that If I can help one person and their family through a tough time, then I will have succeded in my goals. To honor and repay all of the healthcare heroes who have helped my family, and to offer my own empathetic and holistic approach to the practice of nursing. To be a person helping other people in this crazy world.
