I am a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte pursuing a B.S in Business Administration in Finance with a Real Estate Concentration. I am passionate about the finance and real estate industries, with a strong focus on investment strategies, market analysis and financial planning. Hard work and dedication have continued to help maintain a 3.93 GPA and placement on the Chancellor’s List.
Beyond academics, I am involved in the Commercial Real Estate Society, the National Association of Black Accountants, the UNCC Club Soccer Team, and the UNCC Chess Club. These organizations have allowed me to enhance my industry knowledge, leadership, and strong-decision making, while building professional connections.
My professional experience includes working as a top-performing sales representative at Vector Marketing, where I exceeded sales targets and won an all-expenses-paid trip to Jamaica for being the top recruiter in my division. This experience has helped build sales experience, strong client relationships, and thrive in a competitive environment. Additionally as a camp counselor at Country Roads Day Camp, leading and communicating with groups of children in dynamic environments.
With strong work ethic and a passion for finance and real estate, I am eager to apply my skills in an internship or professional role that allows me to contribute and gain more experience.

Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
At UNC Charlotte, I pursued a finance degree with a real estate concentration. This provided a challenging academic environment while allowing me to study outside of New Jersey. I maintained a 3.93 GPA during my attendance and was recognized to the Chancellor's List each semester. During the summer of 2024, my mother suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital twice. My father was also laid off a couple of months after his surgery due to company cuts. I became the glue that held my family together. Returning to school that fall felt unsettling, so I finished the semester and decided to take time off to be with my family.
Despite those challenges during fall of 2024, I still managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Throughout my life my parents taught me to prioritize respect, selflessness, and dedication. With a mother from Guyana and a father from Jamaica, Queens, my parents wanted me to have a better upbringing than they did. We relocated from Long Island, New York to New Jersey to a predominantly white community. I have faced tremendous personal loss and financial struggle who have shapes who I am today. At the age of 13, I lost my older brother in a tragic swimming accident. This traumatizing event forced me to step into the role of the eldest sibling to my younger twin brothers. This transition was especially challenging as I navigated my teenage years facing sociocultural difference hat I struggled to understand. After experiencing such events, nothing can deter me from my goals whether that's academically, athletically, or professionally.
Beyond academics, I've taken pride in developing my professional skills. During the winter break of 2023, I worked as a lucrative sales representative at Vector Marketing. Recruiting the most people in the Monmouth division, I received a paid incentive trip to Jamaica. I’m fascinated with finance real estate, which complements my previous studies at UNC Charlotte. My father worked as a corporate officer at Citigroup for many years and has influenced my finance career path. The Actuarial Science program aligns perfectly with my passion for quantitative analysis and risk assessment.
As a transfer student I have applied to several universities that aligns with my academic and professional aspirations. So far, I have been accepted into the University of Georgia, University of South Florida, and Rutgers University. I am still awaiting decisions from New York University and the University of Maryland. Long term, I aspire to open my own real estate brokerage or an investment fund that prioritizes equitable opportunities for minority entrepreneurs and homebuyers. Many people of color get discouraged in less diverse environments. After attending a predominantly white institution, I've learned to thrive in any obstacle I face. When I achieve my goals and aspirations, I hope to be fix underrepresentation and boost diversity in business. My educational experience at my future university would allow me to prepare for a career in corporate finance.
The prospect of receiving this scholarship is truly exciting, as it would provide invaluable financial support in my educational journey. Beyond financial help, this scholarship represents leadership and values that resonate deeply within myself. This scholarship would alleviate some of financial stress on my family. Through perseverance, education and leaderships, I hope to create opportunities, redefine success, and drive systemic change in the business industries.
