For the first time, I had to acknowledge my triggers instead of masking them, and that process was overwhelming but necessary for me to become a new person. As my mental health declined during my freshman year, my academic performance suffered as well. I mentally could not keep up, and my GPA reflected that struggle. There were moments when the stress and emotional pain made me feel like I was going to die. I experienced suicidal thoughts multiple times, but during those moments, I clung to my cross and turned to God, hoping that things would get better. Even when I felt broken, my faith kept me from acting on those thoughts. I believed that my life had meaning, even when I could not see a future for myself. My sophomore year marked a turning point. I made the conscious decision to fight for my education and my well-being. Compared to my freshman year, I made real progress academically and personally. I became more disciplined, more self-aware, and more committed to improving my grades and rebuilding my GPA. However, while trying to cope with ongoing emotional pain, I began abusing alcohol. Drinking made me feel happy, bubbly, and joyful, feelings I rarely experienced otherwise. Over time, alcohol stopped working, and I realized I was no longer drinking to enjoy myself but to escape. That realization forced me to confront another painful truth about myself. Walking away from substance abuse was extremely difficult. I still struggled with suicidal thoughts, emotional exhaustion, and moments of losing faith. My safe place remained prayer and clinging to God, even when I felt spiritually lost and disconnected. Despite feeling unsupported and alone, I pushed myself to keep studying, working, and showing up. I reminded myself that in my life, I cannot afford to fall without getting back up. Through that perseverance, I passed all my classes and proved to myself that I am capable of growth. Unfortunately, despite my progress, I lost my financial aid due to not meeting SAP requirements. I am now facing significant financial hardship. I do not have financial support, and navigating this challenge as a first-generation student has been incredibly difficult. Still, I refuse to walk away from my education. I am trying to break generational cycles and create a future that looks different from my past. My plan for continuing recovery includes avoiding substance use, maintaining academic structure, staying accountable, and grounding myself through faith, prayer, and reflection. Recovery for me is not perfection but persistence. It is choosing to keep going even when I feel lost. this scholarship would provide more than financial assistance. It would give me the chance to finish college and continue proving that my setbacks do not define me. While professors and staff often say they are there to support students, I have experienced situations where support was conditional, fleeting, or superficial. When I fell short of their expectations, their guidance disappeared, making me feel as though it had never truly been offered. I realized that my experience as a Black student is different from my peers, particularly those who are lighter-skinned or come from more privileged financial backgrounds.
