My name is Miguel Lucio, and I am currently attending Parkland College, working hard to rebuild my life and create a better future for myself. My journey hasn’t been easy—I spent time incarcerated, and that experience changed the way I see life, responsibility, and the kind of man I want to become. Instead of letting my past define me, I’m using it as motivation to grow, stay focused, and become someone I’m proud of.
I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, and I’m living proof of that. Every day I wake up committed to making better choices, staying disciplined, and building something positive out of everything I’ve been through. Education has become a key part of my transformation. Parkland College gives me the opportunity to move forward, continue my personal growth, and work toward a stable, meaningful career.
My goal is simple: to keep improving, stay on the right path, and inspire others who might feel stuck or judged by their past. I want people to know that change is real, growth is possible, and it’s never too late to turn your life around.

My name is Miguel Lucio, and my life has not followed a traditional path. Growing up, I faced instability and environments where making the right choices was often difficult. Without consistent guidance or mentorship, I made decisions that eventually led to incarceration. Facing that adversity was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but it became the turning point that forced me to reflect on who I was and who I wanted to become.
Being incarcerated taught me hard lessons about accountability and responsibility. For the first time, I could no longer blame my circumstances or my past. I had to confront my actions and take ownership of the life I wanted to build moving forward. During that time, I focused on personal growth. I read, set goals, and began thinking seriously about my future. I realized I wanted stability, purpose, and a career that would allow me to contribute positively to my community. Operating engineering stood out as a path that combined technical skill, responsibility, and tangible impact.
Overcoming this adversity required patience, discipline, and resilience. I had to change my mindset, commit to learning from my mistakes, and work consistently to rebuild my life step by step. I sought out opportunities to improve myself and stayed determined to make the most of every chance to grow. This process was not easy, but it taught me that real change is possible when effort and accountability guide your choices.
This experience has shaped me into someone who values growth, responsibility, and empathy. I now approach challenges with perspective and patience, knowing that setbacks are opportunities to learn rather than reasons to give up. I also understand how impactful guidance and encouragement can be for someone facing similar struggles.
If I could give advice to someone in circumstances like mine, I would say: take accountability for your actions, focus on what you can control, and never underestimate the power of small steps toward improvement. Change does not happen overnight, but every positive choice adds up. Surround yourself with people and opportunities that encourage growth, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek guidance. Your past does not define your future—your actions today do.
Adversity taught me resilience, focus, and self-awareness. It pushed me to become the person I am now: committed to education, personal growth, and building a better life. Most importantly, it gave me a story I can share to inspire others and prove that transformation is possible, no matter the obstacles.
Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
My life experiences have taught me that change is possible, even when it feels out of reach. Having gone through incarceration, I know what it is like to be judged solely for past mistakes, and I understand the power of a second chance. That perspective has become one of my greatest strengths, and I want to use it to inspire others in my community to believe in their ability to grow and make better choices. I want people to see that setbacks do not define a person, and that transformation is achievable when you take accountability and commit to personal growth.
Pursuing a career as an Operating Engineer gives me a unique opportunity to contribute to my community both practically and meaningfully. Operating heavy machinery to build roads, bridges, and infrastructure is not just technical work—it directly impacts the daily lives of people around me. Every project I am part of improves safety, accessibility, and quality of life for families and neighborhoods. By showing up with focus, discipline, and responsibility, I hope to demonstrate the value of hard work and accountability in a way that others can see and learn from.
Beyond my technical skills, I want to create environments where people feel encouraged and supported. Many individuals face challenges similar to those I experienced—environments where making the right choices is difficult and hope feels distant. I want to lead by example, showing that growth and success are possible no matter your starting point. Sharing my story when appropriate, I hope to inspire others to pursue education, take responsibility for their decisions, and work toward their goals. My journey is proof that with effort, patience, and resilience, transformation is real.
I also want to use my skills to build a stronger sense of community. Infrastructure is not just about concrete and machinery—it is about connecting people, creating safe spaces, and fostering environments where communities can thrive. Being part of projects that improve people’s lives allows me to give back in a tangible way, while also modeling the importance of perseverance, integrity, and respect for others.
I believe a more empathetic and understanding community begins with recognizing potential in people, even when they have stumbled. Through my personal growth, resilience, and the skills I am developing as an Operating Engineer, I want to help build not just structures, but hope and opportunity. My goal is to inspire change, one person and one project at a time, proving that growth and transformation are possible when effort, mindset, and accountability guide your path.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My name is Miguel Lucio, and I am a determined student pursuing a career as an Operating Engineer. My path to higher education has not been traditional. I have experienced incarceration, and that chapter of my life forced me to confront the consequences of my decisions and take full accountability for my actions. While it was one of the most difficult periods of my life, it ultimately became the turning point that reshaped my mindset, priorities, and long-term goals.
Growing up, I faced instability and lacked consistent mentorship. I often made decisions based on my environment rather than thinking about the long-term impact. Over time, those choices led me down the wrong path. During incarceration, I was removed from distractions and forced to reflect deeply on the direction my life was heading. I realized I did not want my story to end there. I wanted structure, discipline, and a career that required responsibility and skill. That realization pushed me to start thinking seriously about my future.
I became interested in operating engineering because it represents honest, skilled work that builds and strengthens communities. Operating heavy machinery requires focus, patience, technical knowledge, and a commitment to safety. It is not just about moving equipment; it is about precision, teamwork, and contributing to projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings that people rely on every day. The idea of being part of something that creates lasting impact motivates me. I want to build a career where I can take pride in the work I do and provide stability for myself and my family.
This scholarship would play a major role in helping me achieve that goal. As someone rebuilding his life, financial stability is something I work hard to maintain. The costs of tuition, training programs, certifications, and necessary equipment can be overwhelming. Receiving this scholarship would reduce that burden and allow me to focus fully on my education and skill development. It would also serve as encouragement—proof that others believe in growth, accountability, and second chances.
My past taught me resilience, humility, and responsibility. I no longer take opportunities for granted. I understand the value of discipline and consistent effort. Today, I am committed to building a future rooted in purpose and integrity. This scholarship would not only support my academic journey but also strengthen my ability to create a stable, productive life. I am determined to use every lesson I have learned to move forward and to prove that real change is possible when a person is fully committed to becoming be
Koehler Family Trades and Engineering Scholarship
I am passionate about pursuing a degree as an Operating Engineer because it represents more than a career to me—it represents structure, discipline, and the opportunity to build a stable future through honest work. Operating heavy machinery requires precision, responsibility, and focus. It is a profession built on trust and skill, and those are qualities I have worked hard to develop, especially after experiencing incarceration. My past is part of my story, but it does not define the direction of my future.
Growing up, I was exposed to instability and environments where poor decisions were normalized. I did not always have the guidance or mentorship needed to make the best choices, and over time, I allowed my surroundings to influence my behavior. Eventually, those choices led to incarceration. That period of my life was painful and humbling, but it became the most important turning point I have ever experienced. For the first time, I had no one to blame but myself. I was forced to reflect deeply on my actions, my mindset, and the path I was heading down.
During that time, I began focusing on personal growth. I read, I set goals, and I started thinking long-term instead of living moment to moment. I realized I wanted a career that demanded discipline and gave me a sense of pride at the end of each day. Operating engineering stood out to me because it combines technical knowledge, physical skill, and responsibility. Operating heavy equipment is not just about moving machinery; it is about safety, teamwork, and contributing to projects that communities depend on, such as roads, bridges, and buildings.
Through my experiences, I have learned accountability, resilience, and patience. I understand now that success is built one decision at a time. I no longer look for shortcuts. Instead, I value preparation, consistency, and hard work. Education is a critical step in that process. It is proof of my commitment to doing things the right way and building a career that is both sustainable and honorable.
Pursuing this degree is my commitment to rewriting my story. My past mistakes taught me difficult lessons, but they also gave me clarity about the kind of man I want to be. I want to provide stability for myself and my family, earn respect through my work ethic, and contribute positively to society. Becoming an Operating Engineer is not just about earning a paycheck—it is about building a life rooted in responsibility, growth, and purpose.
Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
To me, legacy is more than the things you leave behind—it is the impact you have on the people around you and the example you set for future generations. Legacy is how your life shapes others, how your choices ripple beyond yourself, and how the lessons you learn can help those who come after you avoid the mistakes you’ve made. It is about using your experiences—both successes and failures—to inspire, guide, and create a better future for those who follow.
My upbringing has played a huge role in shaping the path I’ve taken. I grew up in a single-parent household where my parent worked tirelessly to provide for me and my siblings, often sacrificing their own comfort so that we could have opportunities they never had. While I learned the value of hard work and resilience, I also faced challenges that made it easy to fall into destructive patterns. Without guidance or support for navigating life’s challenges, I struggled with addiction and made choices that led to incarceration. Those experiences could have defined my legacy, leaving behind a story of mistakes and missed potential.
But I have chosen to redefine my path. My upbringing taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of fighting for a better life. I now see my legacy as a chance to break the cycles that once held me back. I want my life to be a reflection of growth, perseverance, and transformation. By pursuing higher education, rebuilding my life after incarceration, and dedicating myself to helping others, I am choosing to leave a legacy of hope, guidance, and positive change.
I plan to continue breaking the cycle by using my experiences to support others facing struggles like mine—whether it’s through mentorship, advocacy, or community outreach. I want to show younger generations that mistakes do not define a person, that change is possible, and that education and faith can transform lives. My legacy will not just be what I achieve for myself, but how I inspire and empower others to rise above their circumstances and create better futures.
Legacy, to me, is about turning hardship into purpose. It is about using the lessons of my upbringing, both the struggles and the strengths, to make a meaningful impact. It is about leaving a life behind that tells others: even in the face of obstacles, you can break the cycle, rise above, and create something lasting and positive.
Hines Scholarship
Going to college means much more to me than earning a degree—it represents a second chance, a new beginning, and the opportunity to take control of my life. Growing up, I didn’t have anyone in my family to guide me through higher education. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for me, but college was something they had never navigated. I had to figure out the path on my own, and without guidance, I made mistakes that led me down a difficult road. I struggled with addiction and, at one point, found myself incarcerated. Those experiences were some of the darkest moments of my life, and for a time, it felt like my future was slipping away.
Being in prison was a wake-up call. It forced me to reflect on the choices I had made, confront my past, and decide who I wanted to become. I realized that I didn’t want my past mistakes to define me, and that education was the key to rebuilding my life. College is my way of reclaiming my future, gaining the skills I need to create stability, and building a life I can be proud of. It’s not just about personal growth—it’s about transformation, proving to myself and my family that change is possible even after serious setbacks.
For me, going to college is also about making a difference. I want to use my education to help others who are facing challenges similar to mine—whether it’s struggling with addiction, coming out of incarceration, or growing up without guidance. I want to mentor, support, and provide resources so that others can rebuild their lives, just as I am doing now. Every class I take, every assignment I complete, is a step toward gaining the knowledge and tools I need to make a meaningful impact in my community.
College also allows me to set an example for my family and future generations. Being the first in my family to pursue higher education shows that no matter the obstacles, you can rise above them. I want my story to be a message of hope: that mistakes do not define your future, and that with hard work, determination, and education, it is possible to create the life you want.
Ultimately, college is my chance to turn past struggles into purpose. It is my opportunity to rebuild, grow, and create a future where I can support my family, uplift my community, and inspire others who feel trapped by their circumstances. College is more than a degree—it is my pathway to a better life, and I am determined to make the most of it.
José Ventura and Margarita Melendez Mexican-American Scholarship Fund
I am passionate about being a first-generation, Mexican-American college graduate because it represents so much more than a diploma—it is the culmination of resilience, perseverance, and breaking cycles that have affected my family for generations. Growing up, I watched my parents work tirelessly to provide for our family, often sacrificing their own comfort so that I could have opportunities they never had. They instilled in me a strong work ethic and a belief that education could change my life, but they couldn’t guide me through the path to college. That guidance didn’t exist in our household, and for a time, I struggled to find my way.
As a young adult, I faced challenges that could have permanently derailed my future. I struggled with addiction and ultimately found myself incarcerated. Those years were some of the hardest I’ve ever faced, but they also became the turning point in my life. Being in prison forced me to reflect on my choices, confront my past, and take responsibility for the person I wanted to become. I realized that my education could be the key to reclaiming my life and breaking the patterns that had held me back. It became clear to me that I didn’t just want to survive—I wanted to thrive, to rebuild, and to become someone my family and community could be proud of.
Being a first-generation college student comes with unique challenges. I had to navigate financial aid, academic expectations, and career planning without a roadmap. Every step was a learning experience, and every setback became a lesson in resilience. My identity as a Mexican-American student also shaped my perspective. I am deeply aware of the cultural and societal obstacles many students like me face, from financial limitations to underrepresentation in higher education. But rather than discouraging me, these challenges fueled my determination to succeed and to serve as an example for others.
My passion for this achievement is not only personal—it is also about giving back. I want to use my education to create opportunities for others who feel trapped by circumstances, addiction, or a lack of guidance. I want to be a mentor, a voice of hope, and a source of support for students and community members who face the same obstacles I once did. I understand firsthand how transformative it is to see someone who has walked a difficult path succeed and show that change is possible.
Being the first in my family to pursue and achieve a college degree is more than a milestone—it is a legacy. It is proof that determination, hard work, and resilience can overcome obstacles, no matter how insurmountable they seem. It is a way to honor my parents’ sacrifices while paving the way for my family and community. It is a chance to demonstrate that our past does not define our future and that education is a powerful tool to create change.
Ultimately, my passion for being a first-generation, Mexican-American college graduate comes from the combination of my roots, my struggles, and my vision for the future. It is about turning my hardships into purpose, showing others what is possible, and creating a life that reflects perseverance, responsibility, and hope. Achieving this milestone is not just for me—it is for my family, my community, and anyone who has been told that their circumstances define their destiny. My education is my second chance, and I am determined to use it to make a lasting impact.
Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship
Growing up with a parent who had ALS is something that has shaped me in ways I still feel every single day. When you’re young, you expect your parents to be your strength—the person you lean on, the one who protects you. But ALS flips everything. Instead of being taken care of, I had to learn how to take care of a parent who was slowly losing the ability to walk, talk, move, or even breathe without help. Watching someone you love lose pieces of themselves day by day is heartbreaking. There’s no preparing for it. You just wake up one morning and realize life has changed forever.
I remember the fear, the frustration, the helplessness. I remember trying to stay strong even when I was hurting inside. As a kid, you don’t always understand a disease like ALS, but you understand the pain. You understand the sadness in the room, the silence, the way everyone is trying to keep it together. Those moments forced me to grow up before I was ready. They taught me responsibility, patience, and how to hold onto hope even when life feels unfair.
School was hard during those years. It was difficult to focus when my mind was somewhere else—at home, worrying about my parent, worrying about what the future would look like. Some days I went to school carrying stress, fear, and emotions I didn’t know how to talk about. Education always mattered to me, but life’s weight made it harder to stay on track. Even now, as an adult working to rebuild my life, that early experience still affects me. It planted a deep desire in me to do better, to build stability, and to create a life where I can provide the support I once wished I had.
Financially, my situation has never been easy. Money was always tight because medical needs came first. Even today, I’m working hard to pay for school and take care of myself without falling backwards. There’s no safety net for me—everything I’m doing, I’m doing on my own. That’s why this scholarship would mean so much. It would lift some of the financial pressure off my shoulders and let me focus fully on my education instead of constantly stressing about how I’m going to pay for everything.
This scholarship isn’t just financial help—it’s a chance for me to keep moving forward. It’s a chance to honor everything I went through, everything my parent fought through, and everything I want to become. My past gave me pain, but it also gave me purpose. And with support, I can turn that purpose into a future I’m proud of.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation student means carrying the weight of dreams that started long before me. It means stepping into opportunities that no one in my family ever had, and proving that where you start does not determine where you finish. Growing up in a single-parent household, I watched my parent work endlessly just to keep us going. There were times when money was tight, support was limited, and the pressure to figure things out on my own was heavy. But those challenges taught me responsibility, resilience, and the belief that I could build something better for myself and for the people I love.
I have faced obstacles that almost pushed me off my path completely. I made choices that led to my incarceration, and that period of my life was one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. But it also changed me. It forced me to reflect on who I was becoming and who I truly wanted to be. Instead of letting my past define me, I decided to use it as fuel—to push harder, grow stronger, and prove to myself that I could rise above my mistakes.
Since then, I’ve worked to turn my life around. I’ve thrown myself into learning trades like electrical work, maintenance, and hands-on construction skills. I discovered that I love working with my hands and building things that matter. I am now pursuing education and training that will allow me to build a stable, skilled career and give back to my community. My dreams aren’t just about success—they’re about purpose. I want to be someone young people can look up to, especially those who feel lost or think their life is already “messed up.” I want to show them that change is real, growth is possible, and their future is still in their hands.
This scholarship would bring me closer to those goals by helping me stay focused on my education and training without the constant stress of financial pressure. It would allow me to continue building a new future with confidence, stability, and purpose. Every step I take is not just for me, but for my family and for anyone who needs proof that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.
What drives me is the belief that I can turn my past into power. I am determined, focused, and committed to becoming the best version of myself. This scholarship would support that journey and help me continue moving forward with hope, stability, and a clear sense of purpose.
Ironworkers Scholarship in Memory of Ron V. Howell Sr.
I want to join the Ironworkers union because I’m ready to build a career that demands strength, discipline, and pride—qualities I’ve developed through my life experiences and challenges. Ironwork is a trade where your effort shows in every beam lifted, every structure completed, and every day you show up ready to push yourself. That’s the kind of career I want: one where I earn my place through hard work and commitment. The Ironworkers represent opportunity, stability, and a brotherhood of skilled professionals who look out for one another. Being part of that union would mean becoming part of something bigger than myself, something that contributes directly to the world people depend on every day.
The Ironworkers would benefit me by providing the training, structure, and professional development I need to master a demanding trade. I know that ironwork isn’t easy—it’s physically tough, mentally challenging, and requires precision, discipline, and constant learning. But that’s why I want to be a part of it. The apprenticeship program would give me the skills and knowledge to grow into a highly trained tradesman. The union also offers stability, good pay, and benefits that would help me build a solid future and give my life structure. Coming from a background where stability wasn’t always guaranteed, the support and security the union provides would allow me to stay focused, keep improving myself, and build a career I can truly be proud of.
I bring many strengths to the Ironworkers—strengths developed through real struggles and personal transformation. Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned responsibility early in life. My parent worked hard and sacrificed a lot, and from them I learned that nothing in life is handed to you—you earn it through grit and determination. I’ve also made mistakes in my life that led to my incarceration. That experience was tough, but it forced me to take accountability, grow up fast, and commit to changing my life. I came out with a stronger mindset, a deeper appreciation for discipline, and a drive to never waste another opportunity.
I also bring hands-on experience from construction-related work, electrical tasks, maintenance, and concrete work. I’m used to physical labor, long hours, and challenging environments. I know how to work as part of a team, how to communicate, and how to stay focused. Most importantly, I show up every day ready to work hard and learn.
I bring determination, humility, and a deep hunger to build a better future—not just for myself, but for the people who believe in me. I want to be an ironworker because I’m ready for a trade that matches my work ethic and pushes me to grow. I’m ready to contribute to the Ironworkers union with loyalty, effort, and commitment. All I need is the chance to prove myself.
Barreir Opportunity Scholarship
My name is Miguel Lucio, and my journey has been shaped by challenges, mistakes, and personal growth. I was raised in a single-parent household, and from a young age, I witnessed my parent’s tireless work to provide for our family. Growing up, we faced financial struggles and limited resources, yet my parent’s determination never wavered. Watching them balance multiple jobs, handle responsibilities, and still make time to support me instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and perseverance. Those lessons became the foundation of my character and continue to guide me in every aspect of my life.
Despite the love and support I received, growing up in a single-parent household was not always easy. I learned to be resourceful and independent, and often had to mature faster than my peers. I faced challenges that at times felt overwhelming, and I made choices that eventually led to my incarceration. That period of my life was extremely difficult, but it became a turning point. It forced me to confront my mistakes, reflect on my actions, and make a conscious decision to change the trajectory of my life. I realized that my past did not have to define me and that I could use my experiences to motivate myself and help others avoid similar mistakes.
During this journey of self-reflection and growth, I discovered my passion for the trades, specifically electrical work and general maintenance. I found that working with my hands, solving problems, and seeing tangible results from my efforts gave me a sense of pride and purpose. I gained hands-on experience with Trueline Wire Guidance, performing tasks such as connecting wires, installing electrical boxes, cutting concrete, and handling equipment. Each task reinforced my desire to master a trade through continuous learning, dedication, and commitment to excellence. I understand that true mastery comes not only from skill but also from responsibility, discipline, and attention to detail.
My personal experiences have also inspired me to give back to my community. Having grown up in a household that relied heavily on support from others, I know how much guidance and mentorship can impact a young person’s life. I want to share my story with young people who may be facing similar challenges, showing them that it is possible to overcome setbacks and build a better future. I also hope to use my trade skills to support community projects, provide affordable services to families in need, and contribute to local initiatives that improve the quality of life for those around me.
Being raised in a single-parent household, experiencing incarceration, and working to turn my life around has taught me resilience, responsibility, and empathy. These experiences fuel my determination to succeed in my trade, to continue growing as a skilled professional, and to make a meaningful impact on my community. Pursuing a career in the electrical and maintenance trades is not just a path to personal success—it is a way for me to transform my past challenges into opportunities for growth, service, and leadership. I am committed to using my skills, my story, and my work ethic to inspire others, create positive change, and demonstrate that no matter the obstacles, it is possible to build a life of purpose, stability, and contribution.

I am passionate about pursuing a career in the electrical and general maintenance trade because it allows me to work with my hands, solve problems, and create tangible results that make a real difference in people’s lives. From a young age, I was drawn to hands-on work—building, fixing, and improving things around me. Over time, I realized that working in a trade is not just about performing tasks; it is about responsibility, precision, and using skill to make life better for others. There is a deep sense of pride in completing a project safely and effectively, and that motivates me every day to learn, grow, and master my craft.
My inspiration to pursue this trade comes from both my personal experiences and the people who have influenced my journey. I grew up facing challenges that shaped my character, and at one point, I made choices that led to my incarceration. That experience was one of the most difficult periods of my life, but it also became a turning point. It forced me to reflect on my actions, confront my past mistakes, and think about the kind of future I wanted to create. I realized that I could either let my past define me or use it as motivation to work harder, learn valuable skills, and pursue a meaningful career that could provide stability and purpose.
During this time, I discovered the importance of skilled trades. Working with electrical systems and performing maintenance tasks gave me a sense of accomplishment and showed me a clear path toward building a better life. I gained hands-on experience working with Trueline Wire Guidance, performing tasks such as connecting wires, installing electrical boxes, cutting concrete, and handling equipment. Each task taught me technical skills, discipline, and the value of careful, dedicated work. I now see mastery of my trade as a lifelong journey that requires continual learning, practice, and commitment to excellence.
Beyond personal growth, I am inspired to use my skills to give back to my community. I want to mentor young people who may be facing challenges similar to those I faced, showing them that it is possible to turn their lives around with determination and hard work. I also hope to contribute to local projects, volunteer my skills, and provide affordable services to families in need. By combining my trade expertise with my personal experiences, I hope to make a meaningful, lasting impact on my community while building a future I can be proud of.
Choosing this trade is more than a career decision—it is a way to transform my past challenges into a source of strength, to create opportunities for myself, and to help others along the way. It is a path of growth, service, and purpose, and I am fully committed to walking it.
Richard (Dunk) Matthews II Scholarship
My name is Miguel Lucio, and my journey has been full of challenges, mistakes, and ultimately, growth. Growing up, I faced situations that made life difficult, and at one point, I made choices that led to my incarceration. That period of my life was extremely difficult, but it became a turning point—a time to reflect on who I was, the impact of my actions, and the kind of person I wanted to become. Being incarcerated forced me to face the consequences of my decisions, but it also gave me the opportunity to recognize my potential and my responsibility to change my life.
During that time, I realized I wanted to pursue a path that would allow me to build a stable, productive future while also giving back to the community that had always supported me in small ways. I decided to focus on the trades, specifically electrical work and general maintenance, because I wanted to develop tangible skills that could create real opportunities for myself and others. I gained hands-on experience working with Trueline Wire Guidance, where I learned to connect wires, install electrical boxes, cut concrete, and handle heavy equipment. Each task not only taught me technical skills but also reinforced the values of hard work, discipline, and responsibility. I know that mastering my trade will require continuous learning, dedication, and commitment to excellence, and I am ready to put in the effort necessary to become an expert in my field.
But my goals go beyond personal success. I want to use my experience to make a difference in the lives of others, especially young people who may be at risk of making poor choices. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to feel lost or trapped, and I want to show others that it is possible to turn your life around, no matter your past. Mentorship is a big part of that vision—I want to guide others, provide encouragement, and help them develop skills that can lead to meaningful work and stability.
In addition, I hope to use my skills to contribute to my community in practical ways. Whether it’s volunteering for local infrastructure projects, providing affordable services to families in need, or simply lending a helping hand, I want my work to have a lasting, positive impact. I have learned that giving back is not only rewarding but also essential to building a stronger, healthier community. My past has shown me the value of second chances, and I want to help create opportunities for others to experience the same.
My journey has taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of hard work. While my past includes mistakes I regret, it has also given me a unique perspective and the motivation to change my life for the better. I am committed to mastering my trade, building a career that I can be proud of, and using my experiences to inspire and support those around me. I believe that no one is defined by their past mistakes, and that with determination, focus, and a willingness to learn, it is possible to create a future filled with purpose and positive impact.
By turning my life around, dedicating myself to my trade, and giving back to my community, I hope to serve as an example that transformation is possible. Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent household has had a profound impact on who I am today and the goals I set for my future. My dad worked tirelessly to provide for our family, often sacrificing his own comfort to ensure that I had opportunities he never had. Watching him navigate challenges with determination and resilience taught me the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance. I learned early on that life would not always be easy, but with focus, effort, and a willingness to keep moving forward, it is possible to overcome obstacles.
Living in a single-parent household also gave me a unique perspective on the struggles that many families face. I understand firsthand the challenges of limited resources, long hours of work, and the pressure of trying to create a better future despite setbacks. These experiences instilled in me empathy, determination, and a desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. I realized that the support, guidance, and encouragement I received from my dad were invaluable, and I want to be that source of support for others who may feel lost or limited by their circumstances.
Although I am still exploring my career path, I am committed to using my talents, skills, and life experiences to do good and help people. Whether it is through mentoring young people, contributing to my community, or pursuing work that directly improves the lives of others, I want to leave a positive mark. I have hands-on skills in maintenance, electrical work, and concrete work, and I enjoy problem-solving and creating tangible results. I hope to apply these abilities in ways that not only provide for myself but also benefit others, whether by building, repairing, or improving environments where people live and work.
I envision a future where my experiences and resilience allow me to guide, inspire, and empower others. I want to demonstrate that setbacks—no matter how significant—do not define a person’s potential, and that it is possible to rebuild a life, pursue education, and achieve meaningful goals. My upbringing has given me a strong sense of responsibility, empathy, and the drive to make a positive impact, which will guide me no matter the career I pursue.
In short, being raised in a single-parent household taught me perseverance, empathy, and the importance of hard work. It also inspired me to use my talents and experiences to help others, support my community, and create positive change. Even as I continue to explore the specific path I want to take, I am committed to using my skills, my determination, and my life lessons to contribute meaningfully to the world around me.
Uniball's Skilled Trades Scholarship
I am pursuing a career in the trades, with a focus on maintenance, electrical work, and concrete construction. I have always been drawn to hands-on work because it allows me to solve real problems, be creative, and see immediate results from my efforts. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out solutions and applying practical skills to make tangible improvements in people’s lives and communities. The trades provide a combination of technical knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving that keeps me engaged and motivated.
Beyond the skills themselves, I am passionate about the trades because they offer a path to stability, growth, and independence. I know that mastering a trade allows me to build a career that is both financially sustainable and personally fulfilling. I also see it as a way to give back to my community—whether by creating opportunities for others to learn, improving infrastructure, or mentoring young people who might be facing challenges like I once did. Skilled work is not just a job to me; it is a way to build pride, resilience, and tangible contributions to society.
After completing my trade education and earning certifications, my goal is to start my own business in the trades. I want to provide high-quality work while creating opportunities for others to develop their skills and pursue meaningful careers. One of the most significant challenges I have faced was a period of incarceration. That experience tested my mental and emotional resilience in ways I had never experienced before. I faced isolation, uncertainty, and the challenge of imagining a life beyond my current situation. During that time, my mental health was severely tested, and it would have been easy to feel hopeless.
I worked through this adversity by focusing on personal growth, reflection, and planning for a better future. I leaned heavily on the support of my family, especially my dad, whose encouragement reminded me that my past did not define my potential. I set clear goals for myself, committed to learning new skills, and focused on developing the discipline and mindset needed to rebuild my life. This experience taught me perseverance, responsibility, and the importance of using setbacks as motivation to grow rather than letting them define me.
Overcoming this challenge has shaped the way I approach life and my career. It has given me empathy for others who struggle, resilience in the face of obstacles, and a deep commitment to helping others see that positive change is possible. My journey has shown me that with determination, support, and hard work, it is possible to turn even the most difficult circumstances into opportunities for growth, learning, and meaningful impact.

Coming from a single-parent household has shaped my character, work ethic, and determination. Growing up, I watched my dad work tirelessly to provide for our family, often sacrificing his own comfort so that I could have opportunities he never had. Living in a low-income household taught me the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance, even when resources were limited. These lessons inspired me to stay focused, overcome challenges, and create a better future for myself.
My life experiences, including a period of incarceration, further strengthened my resilience and perspective. During that time, I faced isolation, uncertainty, and mental health challenges, which taught me firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate life without support. These experiences gave me empathy and motivated me to help others who face obstacles, showing them that setbacks do not define their potential. I want to mentor young people and others who may feel trapped, demonstrating that with determination, hard work, and guidance, it is possible to rebuild your life and achieve meaningful goals.
I am actively working toward my goals by pursuing higher education at Parkland College, focusing on developing skills in maintenance, electrical work, and concrete cutting. I plan to continue learning, earn certifications, and eventually start my own business in the trades. Alongside my studies, I focus on personal growth, building a network of support, and seeking ways to contribute to my community.
Through perseverance and dedication, I aim to transform my experiences into opportunities to uplift and inspire others. My personal faith has been a guiding force in my life, especially during the most difficult and challenging moments. During a period of incarceration, I faced intense emotional and mental struggles, and there were times when I felt isolated, overwhelmed, and unsure of my future. In those moments, my faith in God provided hope and strength. It reminded me that my past did not define me and that I had the ability to grow, change, and rebuild my life. My faith became a source of comfort, a foundation for resilience, and a guiding light that helped me focus on personal growth, education, and planning for a better future.
Faith has also influenced the way I relate to others and the kind of person I strive to be. It has taught me the value of empathy, patience, and integrity, which have strengthened my relationships with my family—especially my dad, who has been my constant support and encouragement. My faith has motivated me to offer the same support to others, to be understanding of their struggles, and to help guide them toward positive choices. It has inspired me to turn my own challenges into lessons that can uplift and encourage those facing similar obstacles.
As I look toward my career in the trades, I know my faith will continue to guide me. I love math because it challenges me to think critically, solve problems, and approach challenges with logic and creativity. For me, math has always been more than just numbers and formulas—it has been a tool to develop patience, discipline, and resilience. During difficult periods in my life, including a time when I was incarcerated, I found that the problem-solving skills I learned in math helped me navigate complex situations, think clearly under pressure, and focus on solutions rather than obstacles.
Math has also taught me that even the most complicated problems can be broken down into smaller, manageable steps. This mindset has carried over into my personal journey, allowing me to set goals, make plans, and steadily work toward turning my life around. I have learned that perseverance and consistent effort lead to progress, whether in solving a challenging equation or overcoming personal setbacks.
Beyond personal growth, I love math because it empowers me to pursue my future goals. I see it as a foundation for building a meaningful career in the trades and other areas that require analytical thinking and problem-solving. Math gives me the confidence to tackle technical challenges, plan effectively, and innovate in practical ways.
Ultimately, I love math because it reflects life itself: full of challenges, but solvable with focus, determination, and persistence. It has strengthened my ability to overcome obstacles, think critically, and approach my education and career with confidence. Most importantly, it reminds me that even when life feels overwhelming, there is always a path forward if I break problems down and tackle them step by step.

Mental health and suicide prevention are critical topics for my age group because young people face a unique set of pressures—from school, work, and family expectations to social and personal challenges—often without the tools or support to cope. I have experienced these pressures firsthand during a period of incarceration, where my mental health was severely tested. Being confined in such an isolating and high-stress environment was overwhelming, and I faced intense emotional and psychological struggles. At times, it felt as though there was no way forward, and I learned firsthand how fragile mental health can be when support is lacking. The experience gave me a raw understanding of how quickly despair can take hold and how essential it is to have resources, coping strategies, and people who care.
During this time, I realized the importance of resilience, self-reflection, and seeking help when needed. My struggles taught me empathy and patience, and showed me the impact that even one supportive person can have on someone’s life. My dad, in particular, was a constant source of encouragement and guidance. His unwavering support reminded me that my past did not define my future and inspired me to focus on personal growth, education, and turning my life around. I learned to transform moments of darkness into opportunities for growth, and to approach life with determination and a sense of responsibility not just to myself, but to my community.
These experiences have deeply shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. I have developed a stronger sense of empathy and a desire to support others facing mental health challenges, particularly those who feel isolated or overwhelmed. I am committed to fostering awareness about mental health, reducing the stigma surrounding it, and helping people understand that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. My journey has also motivated me to pursue education and career opportunities where I can make a tangible difference in the lives of others—whether by advocating for mental health resources, mentoring, or creating programs to help individuals overcome adversity.
Experiencing mental health struggles firsthand has taught me that it is possible to turn challenges into lessons and pain into purpose. It has strengthened my relationships, especially with those who have stood by me, and has given me a sense of mission to help others navigate their own struggles. Mental health and suicide prevention are not just topics of discussion for me—they are causes I am committed to supporting through my actions, my education, and my future work. I want to use my experiences to show others that growth, healing, and hope are always possible, no matter the obstacles.
Shanique Gravely Scholarship
Throughout my life, one person has consistently stood by my side, no matter what challenges I faced: my father. He has been my foundation, my reminder of who I am, and my biggest supporter even when I didn’t feel deserving of support. When I think about the person who has impacted me the most, it’s undeniably him. His presence in my life has shaped my character, my goals, and the way I navigate the world.
Growing up, my dad taught me the meaning of loyalty and unconditional love not through words, but through his actions. He showed up for me in ways that most people never see. Whether I was struggling emotionally, facing tough decisions, or drifting in the wrong direction, he never gave up on me. He guided me, corrected me, and reminded me of my potential, even when I couldn’t see it myself.
One of the most defining moments in my life was when I became incarcerated. It was a period where my mistakes caught up with me, and I had to confront the consequences of choices I made. Many people would have walked away from me during that time, but my dad didn’t. He visited, checked on me, and reminded me that my darkest chapter didn’t have to be my final chapter. Instead of judging me, he encouraged me to grow. Instead of abandoning me, he helped me rebuild.
His support made me realize how much I needed to change—not just for myself, but for the people who truly love me. When I came home, my dad didn’t treat me like a failure. He treated me like someone capable of redemption and success. He pushed me to get back into school, to stay focused, and to create a future that I could be proud of. His belief in me helped me believe in myself again.
Today, I’m working hard to turn my life around, and my dad continues to be by my side through every step. His consistency is what inspires me. His strength is what motivates me. His love is what keeps me grounded. I want to become someone he can be proud of—not just because I’m his child, but because I’m becoming a better person, one who takes responsibility, stays disciplined, and strives for something greater.
My dad has shown me that support is more than just being present during the good times; it means standing strong during the hardest moments. He has been my example of resilience, patience, and unconditional love. Everything I am working toward now—education, stability, growth—is possible because he never stopped believing in me.
He is the most impactful person in my life because he helped me see that my past does not define my future. His guidance helped me understand that change is possible, and his unconditional support gave me the strength to start over. I carry his lessons with me every day, and I am committed to becoming the best version of myself, not just for me, but in honor of the man who never gave up on me.
