Hello, my name is Miguel Gonzalez-Ramirez, and I am a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Petroleum Engineering, where I currently hold a 3.89 GPA as an Honors Engineer and Terry Foundation Scholar. I graduated as valedictorian of Crockett High School with a distinguished degree and have continued to build on my commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service in college. At UT Austin, I am involved in professional organizations including the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Association of Drilling Engineers, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, as well as the Terry Scholars Student Association. My experiences extend beyond the classroom through hands-on work, including contributing to the full construction of a residential home with my family’s remodeling business and serving as a Mooov-In worker to support incoming students during campus move-in. Prior to college, I served as Vice President for Lions District MD 2X3 in the Leo Club, representing 15 counties across Central and East-Central Texas, and held leadership roles as President of the Spanish Club and Vice President of Student Council, while also serving my church community as an assistant teacher. As a first-generation college student and Hispanic American, I am deeply motivated by my family’s sacrifices and my desire to give back through leadership, service, and mentorship, and I aim to use my education in engineering to contribute meaningfully to both my community and the future of the energy industry.

Mental health became real to me not through a textbook definition, but during a season of my life when achievement no longer protected me from exhaustion, anxiety, and self doubt. On paper, I was succeeding: I was a top ranked student, a team captain, and a leader in multiple organizations. Yet internally, I felt overwhelmed by the constant pressure to perform, represent my family well, and never show weakness. One night, after finishing homework well past midnight and preparing for another early morning practice, I realized that no amount of discipline could replace emotional well being. That moment forced me to confront a truth I had long ignored: mental health is not a distraction from success, it is a prerequisite for it. That realization reshaped my beliefs about strength and responsibility. Growing up in a first generation household, resilience often meant pushing forward without complaint. I once believed that acknowledging mental strain meant I was ungrateful or incapable. However, my experience taught me that ignoring mental health only magnifies stress and diminishes performance over time. I came to believe that true strength lies in self awareness, balance, and the courage to ask for support when needed. This belief now guides how I approach challenges, not by suppressing emotions, but by addressing them with intention and discipline. My experience with mental health also transformed how I relate to others. As I learned to better understand my own struggles, I became more empathetic toward the people around me. I began listening more carefully to teammates, friends, and family members, recognizing that many struggles are invisible. This shift strengthened my relationships and made me a more effective leader, one who values trust and understanding over perfection. By normalizing open conversations, I saw how vulnerability can bring people closer rather than push them apart, creating healthier and more supportive environments. These lessons have directly influenced my career aspirations as a petroleum engineering student. Engineering is a demanding field that requires sound judgment, teamwork, and long term accountability. My experiences have taught me that mental well being is essential to ethical leadership and sustainable success. Leaders who prioritize mental health reduce burnout, improve collaboration, and make better decisions, a conclusion supported both by experience and logic. I aspire to be an engineer who not only solves technical problems, but also contributes to workplaces that value well being, integrity, and human dignity. Ultimately, my journey with mental health has shaped who I am and who I hope to become. It strengthened my beliefs, deepened my relationships, and clarified my purpose. Rather than viewing mental health as an obstacle I overcame, I see it as a foundation that continues to guide my growth. It has taught me that success is not defined solely by achievement, but by balance, compassion, and the ability to uplift others along the way.
      Sunshine Legall Scholarship
In the future I envision myself as a petroleum engineer revolutionizing the industry by creating technology that will make the extraction process more efficient while keeping the environment clean. More specifically, creating new technologies, such as designing more efficient oil recovery techniques that maximize outputs while reducing the energy input. Additionally, another innovative idea could include improving monitoring systems to better predict performance and operations, possibly even harnessing the power of AI. These are no easy tasks, so I will need to take the proper steps in order to be capable of innovating groundbreaking technology. As of now, I have taken virtually every math and science class offered at my high school; in addition, in my last semester of high school, I will take a physical geology class to jump-start my petroleum engineering curriculum. Unfortunately, my family cannot afford to pay for my tuition while simultaneously raising three other children and managing their debts. This means applying for financial aid and as many scholarships as possible since I will use scholarships as a means of attending college. Without scholarships such as the Sunshine Legall Scholarship, I may not be able to achieve my ambitions. After high school, I plan on attending a university known for having a competitive engineering program, not just for academics, but also to increase my odds of finding like-minded individuals to help me take on such a tremendous task. First, I would try finding people via social media or networking with people who are as passionate as me; this would allow me to get multiple perspectives on an approach as well as motivate me to excel due to my competitive nature. Additionally, being at a top institution will provide more opportunities to receive funding for research. If I cannot manage to receive funding from my university, then social media will be a crucial component, as it will allow me to reach a wider audience and even find people willing to sponsor my cause. Although this goal may seem overly ambitious to some, I am very passionate about using my time on earth to make a positive impact. Whether I have others to rely on or no one but myself, I will strive to minimize the environmental damage that occurs during the extraction process. Protecting our future is of utmost importance to me; therefore, I aspire to be someone who has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in energy innovation to protect our planet.

Leadership is the capacity to assume responsibility, assert your beliefs, and bring people together towards a shared objective. That is what leadership means to me, and I discovered what it truly meant after getting rejected from the National Honor Society. With that knowledge in mind, I decided to take charge and unite my fellow students towards building a better community. When I first embarked on my high school journey, my main goal was to get good grades. I thought that as long as I kept all A's, I had nothing else to worry about. However, that could not have been further from the truth. During my sophomore year, I was eligible to join the National Honor Society; this was great news for me, as I lacked involvement in extracurricular activities apart from sports. However, upon reading all of the requirements, I realized I needed to get out there and show that grades did not represent all that I had to offer. To become more involved, I began stepping out of my comfort zone and joining clubs in and outside of school. This move allowed me to gain leadership positions in multiple clubs throughout the community. For instance, I was able to make a significant impact at my school by becoming heavily involved in student council. Coming into high school, the student council was very unorganized and inactive. This all changed when a new sponsor and officers were instated. I was the new vice president of the student council, and I did not take this responsibility lightly. I encouraged all of my classmates to join, and my attempts were successful. The student council began growing more than ever before. Since high school was going by so quickly, I wanted to do something that would leave a mark. Upon researching and observing what our students were missing, I chose to establish a mentorship program that paired upperclassmen with underclassmen to provide not only academic but also emotional support. This project was a huge success, and our school was delighted. Ultimately, being a leader is a choice, and I am proud to have made that choice, strengthening our school’s unity forever because true leaders inspire collective action and leave lasting legacies. Besides finally joining the National Honor Society, I also gained invaluable life lessons, and through the mentorship program, I learned that true leadership is about empowering others to continue the journey.

Growing up between Mexico and the U.S., I’ve seen firsthand the power of community and the importance of giving back. Over my high school career, I have partaken in many extracurricular activities; this includes a plethora of community service. Although initially I thought community service would feel like a chore, after seeing the difference I made, my perspective shifted. From my freshman year forward, my involvement in my community skyrocketed, leading me to do some form of community service weekly. These experiences have shaped my values of perseverance, humility, and responsibility. As valedictorian, I’ve also sought to inspire others through education, recognizing its transformative power. My commitment to community service has strengthened my sense of purpose and fueled my aspiration to become a petroleum engineer who not only contributes to global energy solutions but also uplifts underserved communities through sustainable practices. Ultimately, I want to build a better tomorrow where every person feels empowered to succeed.
      Team USA Fan Scholarship
My favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA is Stephen Curry. I have always admired Curry, not only for his skills on the basketball court but for the values he embodies off the court as well. Despite not having the height and size of many other basketball stars, Curry has made a name for himself through his unmatched shooting ability, impressive dribbling, sharp passing, and overall playmaking skills. Watching him perform on the international stage with Team USA is inspiring because he constantly proves that dedication and skill can make up for physical limitations. One of the reasons I look up to Stephen Curry is that he is a true role model. Even with all his success, he remains humble and down-to-earth. Unlike many other high-profile athletes, Curry has managed to stay clear of scandals and maintains a strong focus on his family. His commitment to being a good husband and father while balancing the pressures of being a top player sets him apart. This humility and strong moral character make him a great representative of what it means to be an athlete on Team USA, serving as an example for young fans like me. Curry’s journey to the top has also been a story of perseverance, which is another reason I admire him. During his college days at Davidson, scouts doubted his potential due to his smaller size and concerns over his ankle injuries. Yet he worked tirelessly to prove them wrong and became one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. His story is a testament to the power of hard work and determination, showing that no obstacle is too big to overcome. This motivates me to push myself harder in my own life, whether it’s on the basketball court or in the classroom. Additionally, Curry’s loyalty to the Golden State Warriors franchise is another quality that makes him even more admirable. In an era where many athletes frequently change teams, Curry’s commitment to the team that believed in him from the start is refreshing. This loyalty speaks to his character and the importance he places on relationships and community. It’s a reminder that staying true to the people and places that support you is just as important as achieving personal success. In cheering for Stephen Curry on Team USA, I am not just supporting a great player but also someone who represents the values I strive for in my own life. His perseverance, humility, and loyalty make him a standout role model, and watching him excel on the court inspires me to keep working toward my goals, no matter what challenges I might face.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has played a significant role in shaping my goals, relationships, and overall understanding of the world. Growing up in a household where my parents didn’t speak English very well, I faced many challenges navigating schoolwork on my own. This often left me feeling isolated, as I had no one to turn to for help. Despite doing everything independently, my parents had high expectations for me, which added to the pressure I felt. At times, I believed that no matter how hard I worked, I would never meet their standards, and this feeling of inadequacy deeply affected my mental health. During my sophomore year, I became particularly depressed after failing to get into the National Honor Society. I felt like a disappointment, as if all my hard work had been in vain. For someone who had always strived to meet the expectations of both my parents and myself, this was a major blow to my self-esteem. I started to believe that I wasn’t good enough and that all my efforts had been worthless. This was a period where I felt more alone than ever, and it was difficult to find the motivation to keep going. However, something changed when I finally mustered the courage to express my feelings to my parents. To my surprise, they were incredibly understanding. They helped me realize that they were proud of me, regardless of my achievements, and that their expectations were not meant to add pressure but to push me to take advantage of opportunities they never had. This was a pivotal moment for me. I began to see my parents in a new light, understanding that their high expectations came from a place of love and a desire for me to succeed in ways they couldn’t. This revelation eased much of the pressure I had placed on myself and made me rethink my approach to both my mental health and my goals. As I began to overcome the worst of my depression, I started to be kinder to those around me. Having experienced firsthand what it felt like to wake up every day feeling like a failure, I wanted to ensure that no one else felt that way, at least not because of me. I made a conscious effort to be more understanding and compassionate towards others. It sounds a bit strange, but in doing so, I feel like I emotionally matured beyond the typical teenage mindset. I stopped focusing so much on external achievements and started valuing the people in my life and the experiences I was having. This change had a profound impact on my relationships. I became more connected to my peers, and people at school seemed to appreciate my newfound empathy. In a way, my struggles with mental health helped me grow closer to others, even though I had spent much of my life feeling alone. By opening up and allowing myself to be vulnerable, I found that I wasn’t as alone as I thought and that others were dealing with their own battles. Ultimately, my experience with mental health has shaped my goals as well. I now strive not only for academic success but also for personal fulfillment and emotional well-being. I’ve learned that success isn’t just about getting into honors programs or meeting external expectations; it’s also about being kind to yourself and others. This balance has become central to how I understand the world and what I want out of life moving forward.

Soccer has been a significant part of my high school journey, shaping my character and providing me with valuable life lessons. Throughout the three years I have played soccer, I have developed several important traits that have impacted my life both on and off the field. As a freshman, I played on the junior varsity (JV) team. It was a challenging year; our team didn’t win a single game, and frustration ran high. I seriously considered quitting, but after discussing the situation with my coaches, I learned a vital lesson about teamwork and perseverance. The main issue wasn’t our skill level but our inability to work together as a cohesive unit. Many of us thought we were too good for JV, which prevented us from becoming true team players. This experience taught me that success is achievable with hard work, communication, and a collective effort, regardless of the resources at hand. This lesson stuck with me and became a cornerstone of my character. When I moved up to varsity during my sophomore and junior years, I encountered new challenges and opportunities for growth. Playing at a higher level, I quickly realized the importance of taking advice from more experienced players and coaches. It was essential to put my ego aside and listen to those who had more knowledge and experience. This willingness to learn and adapt not only improved my performance on the field but also earned me the respect of my teammates and coaches. These experiences have profoundly impacted my life outside of soccer. Being ranked #1 in my class, I’ll admit there were times when I felt superior to others. However, soccer taught me that everyone has something valuable to offer. By acknowledging and appreciating the contributions of others, I learned to be more humble and collaborative. This shift in perspective made me more well-liked and respected among my peers. My ability to make others feel heard and valued became a key aspect of my leadership style, benefiting various aspects of my academic and social life. Soccer has also reinforced the importance of perseverance and good decision-making. There were many times when the pressure was intense, both in games and in balancing sports with academics. By applying the lessons of hard work and teamwork from soccer, I learned to manage this pressure effectively. These traits have helped me navigate the challenges of being a top student, maintaining my GPA, and excelling in my extracurricular activities. Overall, soccer has been much more than just a sport I love; it has been a transformative experience. It has taught me to be humble, to value teamwork, and to make sound decisions. These character traits have not only made me a better athlete but also a better person. They have enabled me to build strong relationships, lead effectively, and handle the pressures of high school life with resilience and grace. Soccer has prepared me for future challenges and successes, and I am grateful for the lessons it has imparted on me.
