Bio

As a Latino physician and immigrant, I experienced firsthand the barriers underserved communities face, including language, healthcare access, and economic hardships, inspiring me to dedicate my career to improving health equity. I completed a residency in Bogota, serving diverse, disadvantaged populations, gaining profound insights into healthcare disparities. I have participated in international medical volunteer missions, delivering care to rural and underserved communities lacking essential healthcare services. Currently, I am a Dermatoogy Medical Resident at Mayo Clinic and I volunteer at AGAPE Healthcare Jacksonville, a clinic dedicated to uninsured, rural populations across Putnam, Duval, and St. Johns counties, with a special focus on diagnosing and managing skin cancer. Beyond clinical practice, I actively mentor colleagues and students, engaging them in community service and nurturing their passion for healthcare equity. My goal is to continue expanding these initiatives, addressing financial barriers, and enhancing healthcare access and outcomes for underserved communities.

    Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
I was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, in a humble home built on perseverance and grit. My father, a locksmith, taught me the value of honest work and resourcefulness. My mother, with quiet strength, encouraged my curiosity. When I became the first in my family to pursue medicine, I saw it not just as a profession, but as a way to serve those who, like us, had to work twice as hard for every opportunity. Years later, after surviving threats of violence and a kidnapping attempt against my father, I made the difficult decision to leave my country. I arrived in the United States with my pregnant wife and one suitcase, no income, no connections, and only a dream to rebuild our life with dignity. I accepted an unpaid research position at the Mayo Clinic in Florida and worked over 80 hours a week to prove my worth. With time, I earned a reputation for leadership, innovation, and collaboration. I published research in top dermatology journals, co-designed a new dermatology curriculum back home, and became a mentor for other immigrant medical graduates. Still, none of these accomplishments came easily. There were nights when I studied for my USMLE exams while helping my daughter fall asleep, days when we worried if we’d afford groceries or rent. But my family's journey constantly reminded me why I came here: to create a better life not just for us, but for others like us. My wife and I have worked hard to give our children what we never had, security, education, and the right to dream. But I’ve also stayed rooted in service. I volunteer at a free clinic for uninsured patients, many of them immigrants. I help mentor Hispanic medical students through MOLA, and I share my story to let others know they are not alone in their struggle. My aspiration is to become a board-certified dermatologist in the U.S. who uses clinical expertise, innovation, and advocacy to close healthcare gaps, especially among immigrant and underserved communities. I want to lead efforts to make medical education more inclusive, champion policies that support international medical graduates, and continue research that advances dermatologic care for all skin types. My family’s story has shaped everything I believe: that resilience matters more than privilege, that service defines success, and that the immigrant experience, full of sacrifice, humility, and strength, is one of this country’s greatest assets. Receiving the Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship would not just be financial support; it would be an affirmation of the values we’ve lived by. I carry my parents’ determination, my daughter’s hopes, and my community’s dreams with me. With this opportunity, I will continue to rise, and bring others with me.
    Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success for me has always meant using my skills and education to positively impact underserved communities, driven by personal experiences and a deep-rooted commitment to service. My earliest inspiration came from watching my father, a locksmith whose meticulous and disciplined work taught me resilience, determination, and curiosity. Helping him in his workshop, I learned the value of perseverance and problem-solving, traits I've carried forward into my medical career. My journey in medicine began in Bogota, Colombia, where I pursued dermatology training at San Jose Hospital, a national referral center caring for diverse, underserved populations. Here, I gained profound insights into the systemic barriers faced by disadvantaged communities, such as limited healthcare infrastructure, financial constraints, and inadequate preventive education. During residency, I observed that groundbreaking medical advancements often originated from the United States, inspiring my dream to further my training and help bridge these healthcare disparities through international collaboration. Personal challenges further deepened my commitment to serving underserved populations. While studying in Colombia, my family faced significant threats, including a kidnapping attempt targeting my father. Despite the substantial emotional and financial strain, I persevered, recognizing that resilience and determination were essential in overcoming adversity. These challenges fueled my motivation to advocate for disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, aligning my professional goals with my personal experiences. Since moving to the United States, I have continued to serve underserved and rural communities actively. My volunteer work with AGAPE Healthcare Jacksonville—a free clinic serving uninsured populations across rural regions of Putnam, Duval, and St. Johns counties—allows me to directly impact patients who face substantial healthcare barriers. Additionally, through international medical volunteer missions, I have provided medical care to rural, underserved populations, further solidifying my dedication to healthcare equity. As a dermatology resident, my clinical practice frequently addresses skin cancer, the most prevalent cancer worldwide yet commonly neglected within underserved communities due to inadequate preventative education, limited screening availability, and delayed care access. Through my practice and volunteer work at AGAPE Healthcare Jacksonville, I actively deliver culturally sensitive, accessible dermatologic care and preventive education, aiming to reduce the burden of skin cancer and improve overall community health outcomes in rural and underserved populations across Putnam, Duval, and St. Johns counties. Mentoring has become an integral part of my approach to healthcare service. By actively engaging colleagues, medical students, and residents through mentorship and training programs, I have expanded our collective impact, ensuring that efforts to address healthcare disparities persist and grow. My goal is not merely to provide care myself but also to foster a sustainable, collaborative environment where future healthcare professionals are inspired to prioritize community service and advocacy. This scholarship opportunity would significantly support my continued work in these underserved settings by alleviating financial pressures associated with supporting my growing family. Receiving this scholarship would enable me to further expand my volunteer and community outreach activities, enhance my mentorship initiatives, and focus on innovative solutions to systemic challenges in healthcare access. Ultimately, I envision success as creating lasting change in healthcare accessibility and equity within underserved and rural communities. With continued support, I aim to deepen my impact, expand collaborative networks, and inspire future healthcare providers to sustain and enhance these critical community efforts.

My connection to the community I serve is deeply personal and professionally purposeful. Growing up as a Latino physician and immigrant, I witnessed firsthand the barriers faced by underserved, predominantly Hispanic communities. My family and I personally navigated challenges such as language barriers, limited healthcare infrastructure, and socioeconomic difficulties. These experiences shaped my commitment to addressing health disparities, enhancing culturally competent care, and dedicating my practice to communities with significant medical needs. My path toward serving medically underserved communities began early in my career through international medical volunteer missions. I had the privilege of providing medical care to rural, disadvantaged populations lacking even basic healthcare resources. These formative experiences strengthened my resolve to dedicate my practice to improving healthcare access and equity. Currently, as a dermatology resident, I directly contribute to diagnosing and managing skin cancer, the most common form of cancer worldwide, yet frequently overlooked in underserved communities. Skin cancer significantly burdens these populations due to inadequate preventative education, limited routine screening, and delayed interventions. Through my clinical work, I focus on timely diagnosis, effective management, and patient education to mitigate this impact. Additionally, I participate actively in community outreach programs that educate residents about sun protection and early detection of skin cancers, reinforcing preventive healthcare practices. Beyond clinical practice, I actively volunteer with AGAPE Healthcare Jacksonville, a free clinic that serves uninsured, rural, and disadvantaged communities within Putnam, Duval, and St. Johns counties. This experience enables me to directly address local health inequities, providing compassionate and culturally sensitive care to those who would otherwise lack access. My involvement with AGAPE Healthcare has not only allowed me to deliver direct patient care but also to develop and implement community health initiatives aimed at enhancing health literacy and awareness among vulnerable populations. The communities I serve remain medically underserved primarily due to a critical shortage of primary and specialist care providers. They face significant socioeconomic obstacles, language barriers, limited health literacy, and geographic isolation. These barriers frequently result in delayed care, advanced presentations of diseases, and overall poorer health outcomes. My professional mission is rooted in bridging these gaps, delivering accessible dermatologic care, advocating for comprehensive preventive education, and driving systemic improvements in healthcare delivery. Despite facing financial challenges as I support my growing family, my commitment to serving disadvantaged communities remains unwavering. Through mentoring, I've successfully engaged other members of my team in these volunteer and outreach activities, expanding the impact of our collective efforts. By fostering this collaborative approach, I aim to inspire a lasting commitment to community service among my colleagues, ensuring continued advocacy and care for underserved populations. Ultimately, my vision extends beyond individual patient encounters, I strive to establish sustainable health solutions and empower communities to achieve long-term health equity and improved quality of life.
