Over the past four years as a political science major at the University of the District of Columbia , I’ve gained a strong understanding of the laws and policies that shape our society particularly those that disproportionately harm communities of color. Studying these injustices inspired me to join Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated an organization grounded in public service, political awareness, and the pursuit of justice. As president of the Beta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated , I’ve had the honor of leading initiatives that reflect the Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, particularly around educational development and political awareness. We’ve held financial accountability workshops to help students learn how to manage their money and build financial independence. We’ve also served our local community by preparing meals for the homeless and sending handwritten cards to elderly individuals and sick children, spreading kindness to those who are often overlooked. These acts of service have strengthened my leadership, deepened my connection to the community, and reminded me daily of the power of collective action. Beyond Delta, the values instilled in me through sisterhood and service have continued to guide my work. For my senior capstone project, I helped lead UDC Students for Justice, an initiative focused on educating students about their rights and advocating for criminal justice reform. Inspired by Delta’s mission, we recently hosted a Know Your Rights training on campus to empower students with the legal knowledge they need when interacting with law enforcement. It’s work that reflects my commitment to advocacy and my desire to build a more informed and protected community. After graduation, I plan to attend law school and become a criminal defense attorney focused on wrongful convictions and the mass incarceration of Black people. Too many lives have been destroyed by a system that doesn’t see our full humanity. I want to stand in that gap, fighting for those who have been silenced and pushing for systemic change from within. Delta Sigma Theta sorority incorporated will remain a lifelong support system as I do this work, offering a strong network of women committed to justice and social action. I hope to expand our Know Your Rights program in underserved communities and collaborate with local organizations to provide legal education and advocacy. This journey hasn’t come without challenges. Balancing leadership, academics, and service, as well as athletics has tested my limits. As a Black woman navigating through a multitude of spaces, I’ve also had to push past feelings of invisibility and prove my worth repeatedly. But each obstacle has shaped me into a more focused, resilient, and determined version of myself. Delta Sigma Theta has given me both the platform and the purpose to make a difference. Through continued legal education, community engagement, and unwavering sisterhood, I’m committed to carrying our legacy forward by helping build a more just and empowered future.
