Specifically in the working field, I think taking up space is making sure that you are being recognized as someone who is important to the conversation. As someone who comes from a low-income household and is a woman who is a minority it is very easy for people to assume you aren't qualified for the job, course, school etc. Specifically what I do to make sure people understand I am valuable is I treat everyone with kindness. I don't see there being a purpose for me to act mean or try to prove myself constantly to people. As long as I am being recognized as a person I can work with that.
