Having an education is one of the best gifts I've ever had, It might sound like something everyone would say, but I am well aware that being in the position I am right now is a privilege. I come from a very working family. Grandparents who did not complete elementary school, parents who were both the firstborn and had to not only provide for themselves but also their siblings. Having to move countries twice because of my parent's work and still having the opportunity to continue my education are things that I always keep in my mind. Since I was little I have always had the support of the members I mentioned before and I know that they can picture themselves in me, and for me, having this opportunity to fulfill not only what I want but fulfill their expectations and see their excitement give me the will to keep going. Looking at the mirror I see my grandmother's smile, my grandpa's crooked teeth, my dad's nose and my mom's eyes, which always remind me that I'm a mix of people who have fought the adversities to see me stand here. I carry them within myself. At every school ceremony, graduation and accomplishment, It's not only mine but theirs too. I have the patience and care for others as well as my grandma and that is why I want to pursue a degree in social work. I want to be able to help people, to keep them going and to have hope, the same way my family has inculcated all of this to me. I want to be someone people can rely on and go to, I want them to feel what it is to be cared for the same way I have been taught. I see myself leaving for college, but not for too long because I know that I will always come back to the place I know, my safe space. I still want to experience my life as a uni student at ASU and I know this scholarship could help me, I know who I am, I know what I want and I know where I am going. Education to me is the smile on my face every time I get a good note, is the hard work I put myself into to stand out and to learn more than just what is taught at school. Education is what I want for myself in hopes to keep growing as a person, and always, always, having the best cheers by my side, my family.
