Boyd J. Cameron Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income immigrant household, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that financial insecurity can bring. My mother immigrated to the United States from Haiti, carrying dreams of a better future but facing immense obstacles. She spoke no English, had limited formal education, and lacked knowledge of basic financial concepts. I remember one moment vividly, my mother didn't understand the difference between debit and credit cards, leading to overdraft fees that set us back financially. Watching her struggle to provide for our family while navigating an unfamiliar financial system ignited my passion for financial literacy and access. It also shaped my desire to pursue a career in finance and business analytics.
As a first-generation college student at Boston College, I am driven by the determination to break generational cycles of financial instability. My studies in finance and business analytics are not just academic pursuits; they are deeply personal missions. I envision myself working in asset or wealth management, helping individuals and families grow and protect their financial resources. However, I also recognize the stark reality that these services often cater exclusively to the wealthy, leaving underserved communities, like the one I grew up in—behind.
This inequality fuels my ambition to create a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching financial literacy to immigrants and low-income families. I want to empower people like my mother, hardworking individuals with dreams but limited resources, by equipping them with the tools to understand credit, budgeting, savings, and investments. Financial freedom should not be a privilege reserved for a select few; it should be a right accessible to everyone. My goal is to reach at least 500 families in the first year, offering workshops and online resources tailored to their needs.
The values Boyd J. Cameron embodied—hard work, service, and dedication, deeply resonating with me. Much like Mr. Cameron, my mother has shown resilience and sacrifice, providing for her children even in the face of adversity. Her perseverance has inspired me to work tirelessly toward my goals, knowing that my success is not just my own but a reflection of her sacrifices and dreams. Mr. Cameron’s service to his country and his entrepreneurial spirit motivate me to serve others through my own financial knowledge and to create opportunities for those who feel left behind.
I plan to use my education to give back to communities that often go overlooked. Through internships, coursework, and personal research, I am developing the knowledge and skills needed to build financial solutions that are both accessible and impactful. My goal is to demystify finance and make it less intimidating, showing others that it is possible to take control of their financial futures.
Receiving the Boyd J. Cameron Memorial Scholarship would allow me to continue my education and further my mission of transforming financial literacy in immigrant and low-income communities. Mr. Cameron’s legacy of service inspires me to honor his memory by uplifting others and creating opportunities for those who need them most.
I believe that business is more than just numbers and profits, it is a tool for empowerment and change. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to fulfilling my vision of bridging the gap between financial services and underserved communities. My education is not only an investment in myself but also in the countless lives I hope to impact in the years to come.
