Rho Brooks Women in STEM Scholarship
Academics have always come natural to me. Yet, in recent years I have tapped into a saturated passion for learning. Interestingly enough, my desire for intellectual expansion started from a Ted Talk. Over the course of a few months, I became obsessed with learning new information from the world's big names, specifically in the STEM field. While my peers went through phases of music tastes and clothing trends, I was going through Ted Talk phases. For a few months I was interested in hospital life. I heard countless stories from nurses, surgeons, and patients of relentless diseases, to quench the thirst of knowledge tailored to hospitals. Next it was the pharmaceutical phase. Pharmacists from all around the world told me about their experiences with prescriptions and crazy customers. Still not satisfied I soon binged topic after topic in pursuit of an academic passion. After learning about everything I could from modern medicine to criminal journalism, I finally landed on a theme that made my heart race with excitement to learn more: biology. I went out and purchased as many books I could get my eager hands on. This blossomed into maintaining a healthy relationship with various scientific journals and news sources to stay updated with modern day affairs in not only biology, but in many of the other subjects from the Ted Talk days. I am hungry to learn more about biology and can not wait to study science in college. The world is in desperate need of fresh outlook and as a woman, my female worldview will be incredibly beneficial to an academic society. I am passionate about being a strong voice in the scientific community, pursuing research and undefiled academia. I plan to one day give my own Ted Talk, adorning the stage with stories of my own scientific success, paving the way for more women to be involved in the brutally glorious world of science.

As much as I would love to claim the workmanship of archaeologists, I would be misrepresenting my title as a musician. I have always loved composing music and my methods remind me of an archaeologist’s job. No matter the style, it is my responsibility as a musician to uncover what lies underneath the “dirt” of the creative mind. The music has always existed, I just have to take time to dig for it. The random ear worms find themselves on the same paper to reveal the skeleton of the song. The expressive qualities fill the beauty of the song similar to archaeologists using imagery to restore the beast to its prehistoric glory. Writing music is an art and while no archaeologist, I am a musician.
