Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Dementia became personal to me through my great-grandmother, a woman whose presence once anchored our family with strength, warmth, and wisdom. She was known for her stories, her routines, and the way she remembered everyone’s preferences without effort. Watching dementia slowly change her has been one of the most difficult and meaningful experiences of my life, shaping how I understand illness, caregiving, and compassion.
At first, the changes were subtle. She began repeating questions, misplacing familiar items, and forgetting recent conversations. Over time, those small moments grew into larger challenges. There were days when she struggled to recognize familiar faces or became confused by surroundings she once knew well. For our family, it was heartbreaking to watch someone we loved so deeply lose pieces of herself while still being physically present. Dementia taught me that loss does not always come all at once; sometimes it happens gradually, leaving families to grieve while still holding on.
One of the most impactful lessons I learned was the emotional toll dementia places on caregivers. Family members stepped into new roles, becoming advocates, decision-makers, and sources of constant reassurance. Simple tasks required patience and understanding, and moments of frustration were often followed by guilt. Through observing my great-grandmother’s care, I saw how dementia affects not only the individual, but the entire family dynamic. It requires strength, resilience, and unconditional love.
Despite the challenges, there were moments that revealed the depth of human connection. Even when my great-grandmother struggled with memory, she responded to familiar voices, gentle touch, and moments of kindness. A smile, a laugh, or a calm moment together reminded me that although dementia affects memory, it does not erase humanity. These experiences taught me that care must extend beyond medical treatment to include dignity, patience, and respect.
Witnessing my great-grandmother’s journey also opened my eyes to the importance of awareness and education surrounding dementia. I noticed how easily symptoms can be misunderstood and how stigma can lead to isolation for both patients and families. Learning more about dementia helped me understand that behavioral changes are not intentional, but part of the disease. This knowledge reinforced the need for greater community education, early intervention, and support for caregivers.
Through my great-grandmother’s experience, I have learned that healthcare is not only about curing illness, but about supporting quality of life. It requires listening, empathy, and advocacy especially for individuals who may no longer be able to advocate for themselves. Dementia showed me the importance of treating patients as whole people, not just diagnoses.
Ultimately, my great-grandmother’s experience with dementia has shaped my perspective on compassion and service. It has strengthened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare where I can provide patient-centered care and support families facing difficult journeys. While dementia has taken parts of who she once was, it has given me invaluable lessons in empathy, patience, and the enduring power of love lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Education has always been more than a pathway to a career for me, it has been a source of empowerment, opportunity, and purpose. Through education, I have learned not only academic concepts, but also how to think critically, lead with confidence, and envision a future beyond my immediate circumstances. It has shaped who I am and who I aspire to become, and it continues to motivate me to give back to others in meaningful ways.
My appreciation for education grew as I recognized the doors it opened for me. Access to challenging coursework, supportive mentors, and hands-on learning experiences allowed me to explore my interests in science and medicine at an early age. Through programs such as medical internships and leadership opportunities, I discovered how education can transform curiosity into action. These experiences showed me that learning is not confined to classrooms it extends into communities, hospitals, and real-world problem-solving. Education gave me the confidence to pursue ambitious goals and the tools to work toward them.
Education is also important to me because it fosters equity. I have seen how access to resources, encouragement, and knowledge can significantly impact a student’s future. Opportunities that were made available to me such as exposure to STEM fields and leadership development shaped my academic direction and personal growth. Without these experiences, my understanding of what was possible for my future would have been limited. This awareness has strengthened my belief that education should be accessible and inclusive, regardless of background or circumstance.
As I pursue a career in medicine, education remains central to my goals. Becoming a physician requires years of rigorous learning, adaptability, and resilience. However, I view this journey not as an obligation, but as a privilege. Each step of my education prepares me to better serve patients, advocate for their needs, and contribute to advancements in healthcare. Education equips me with the knowledge to make informed decisions and the empathy to provide compassionate care, especially during moments when patients are most vulnerable.
The legacy I hope to leave is one rooted in service, mentorship, and opportunity. I want to be remembered not only as a skilled healthcare professional, but as someone who invested in the growth of others. I hope to support educational programs, fund scholarships, and mentor students who aspire to careers in STEM and medicine but may lack resources or guidance. By giving back to the institutions and communities that supported me, I aim to help create pathways for future generations to succeed.
Ultimately, education matters to me because it creates change both personal and collective. It empowers individuals to pursue their passions, strengthens communities, and drives progress. Through my education and future career, I hope to leave a legacy that reflects gratitude, responsibility, and a commitment to lifting others as I continue to grow.
Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
The moment that inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field did not come from a textbook or classroom, but from a delivery room at 7:42 a.m. As nurses moved quickly and monitors echoed steady beeps, the sound of a newborn’s first cry filled the room. Standing there in scrubs during my medical internship, I felt a sense of clarity I had never experienced before. In that moment, I realized that medicine is not only about science and procedures it is about being present for people during the most life-changing moments of their lives.
My path to medicine has been shaped by curiosity, leadership, and hands-on experience. During a medical internship program this past summer, I was one of only two high school students selected to participate alongside college-level interns. I entered the program with an interest in anesthesiology, drawn to the role physicians play in managing pain and protecting patient safety. A scheduling mix-up initially placed me in an obstetrics and gynecology rotation, an experience that unexpectedly transformed my perspective. Observing births and C-sections allowed me to see how anesthesiologists and OB/GYNs work together to balance technical precision with compassion. Watching patients place their trust in their medical team reinforced my desire to pursue a career that blends science, empathy, and responsibility.
My inspiration for medicine extends beyond this internship. In high school, I served as president of the Medical Careers Club, participated in Henry Ford’s cadaver lab program, and researched public health initiatives focused on reintroducing swimming programs to underserved communities. These experiences broadened my understanding of healthcare beyond hospital walls and highlighted the importance of prevention, education, and community-based solutions. Leadership roles in organizations such as Princess to Queens and Ivy L.E.A.F. also shaped my passion for mentorship and advocacy, particularly for young women interested in STEM and healthcare careers.
Through these experiences, I have learned that medicine is about more than treating illness—it is about addressing disparities and ensuring patients feel seen, heard, and supported. As a future anesthesiologist, with a particular interest in obstetric anesthesiology, I plan to make a difference by prioritizing patient-centered care during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Anesthesiologists play a critical role in managing pain, protecting respiratory function, and ensuring patient safety, especially for individuals with complex medical needs. I hope to be a physician who communicates clearly, listens carefully, and advocates for individualized care.
Beyond clinical practice, I plan to give back through mentorship, community outreach, and advocacy. I want to support programs that expand access to healthcare education and inspire students from underserved backgrounds to pursue careers in medicine. By sharing my experiences and offering guidance, I hope to help others see that a future in healthcare is possible for them as well.
Ultimately, I was inspired to pursue medicine because it allows me to combine scientific curiosity with service and compassion. Through my career, I hope to improve lives not only through medical skill, but through empathy, leadership, and a commitment to uplifting others.
Dorothy Walker Dearon Scholarship

The clock read 7:42 a.m. as the delivery room filled with movement nurses working quickly, monitors beeping steadily, and quiet voices offering reassurance. Then everything paused with one sound: a baby’s first cry. Standing there in borrowed scrubs, I felt something shift inside me. I wasn’t just witnessing the beginning of a new life; I was discovering the direction of my own.
That moment took place during a medical internship program I participated in this past summer, where I was one of only two high school students selected to work alongside college-level interns. I entered the program with a strong interest in anesthesiology, eager to learn about pain management and patient care in surgical settings. However, due to a scheduling mix-up, my first rotation was in obstetrics and gynecology. At the time, I was disappointed, believing I had been placed in the wrong area. I soon realized that this unexpected start would become the most meaningful part of my experience.
Under the mentorship of a compassionate preceptor, I observed births and C-sections firsthand. I watched as anesthesiologists carefully monitored patients, ensuring their comfort and safety, while OB/GYNs worked with precision to bring new life into the world. What impacted me most was not only the medical skill involved, but the humanity present in every interaction. Even in urgent moments, the medical team communicated calmly, worked together seamlessly, and treated each patient with empathy and respect. It was in those moments that I saw how medicine blends science with compassion.
My passion for healthcare developed long before this internship. In high school, I served as president of the Medical Careers Club, participated in Henry Ford’s cadaver lab program, and explored public health initiatives focused on reintroducing swimming programs to underserved communities. Outside of academics, I held leadership roles in organizations such as Princess to Queens and Ivy L.E.A.F., where I grew as a mentor and advocate, particularly for young women pursuing their goals.
Through these experiences, I have learned that medicine is not just about procedures or textbooks it is about being present for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. This internship solidified my desire to pursue obstetric anesthesiology, a field that allows me to combine precision, empathy, and purpose.
The cry I heard that morning was not just the beginning of someone else’s life. It was the moment I found clarity in my own path and confirmed the future I am determined to pursue.
