The most valuable commodity of the twenty-first century is data, and the world’s most in-demand commodity is people able to handle that data with a desire to make the world a better place. Data is being produced at a rate like never before, with data collection devices in virtually everyone's pockets, on their wrists, or in their cars. All this data that is being produced has the potential to completely transform the world; the problem now is that this change is currently changing the world for the worse. Data is the lifeblood of so many industries that we cannot imagine the world without. Social media, gaming, artificial intelligence, banking and finance, insurance, and retail are all sectors whose lifeblood is data. They are constantly evaluating and reevaluating how it can get companies more users, money, and engagement. I see all this happening, and I am outraged; why isn’t more of this data being used for something that improves the lives of the masses? Data scientists have found countless ways to utilize their skills and these massive amounts of data in the interest of making money, but why aren’t government agencies using it to figure out novel ways to capture carbon from the atmosphere? Why are non-profits not using it to create better, longer-lasting clothing for people in need? Why aren’t pharmaceutical companies using it to create more efficient and effective vaccines? As I am writing this, I am getting more and more frustrated about why such a valuable resource is being used for something so futile and wasteful. These are the questions that are driving me to make plans for a start-up that addresses one or more of these unseen failures. The possibilities are endless. After earning an education in Data Science, I will be equipped with the tools and understanding to tackle so many issues similar to this. I could help LGBTQ+ kids growing up in conservative towns like me, develop AI that can detect cancerous growths, project communities that will be hit the hardest by disease to get them help, and so many more. I will have the means to improve the world in so many ways, and that is a gift that I do not plan on squandering on lining a few lizards’ pockets. While my language may not make everyone happy, this is one of the few ways I feel I can help others, one of the few things that I can put out into the world that I can be proud of. My dream is to take what I learn in college and apply it to something real.
