Bio

“give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. These are words of wisdom that I strongly believe in. As a Detroit kid coming up from a shaky background, I am truly grateful for all the opportunities and resources I was exposed to throughout my academic career. Whether it is collaborating with my lacrosse team while running up and down a field, building and improving upon an electric-solar vehicle for the annual Solar Car Challenge in Texas, or learning and practicing Chinese with my classmates, I know these experiences have assisted in shaping me into the person I am and am developing into today. Many students in my position have never heard of the sport of lacrosse or don’t know where to sign up for a free, inclusive S.T.E.M program centered in Detroit, Michigan. Every student has boundless potential, but they need someone there to help nurture their gifts and talents, and I am appreciative that I have had such people present in my life. My mother, Lauren Catherine Rivers, has been in my corner since the beginning. She sacrificed so much to ensure a bright future for both me and my younger sister, Ivani. …. I want to become the best possible version of myself so I can be there for those who will need me… just as others have been there for me throughout

Many adults who went down the higher education path are swimming in debt today, and that's the stark reality my Millennial cousin is facing. Jordan, a hard-working engineer living in Washington D.C does his absolute best to make ends meet, but the seventy thousand dollars he owes to his university weighs him down from reaching his fullest potential. Many Gen Z students see this and that's why increasingly more of us newly graduated seniors opt-out of that path and go straight into the workforce. However, a college education grants students the tools which assist in achieving success, but the insanely high prices of four-year tuition make it difficult for financially disadvantaged students to obtain degrees. Many of us come from mainly POC(people of color ) areas that are forgotten by the government and affected by educational inequalities, housing inequalities, etc. Giving opportunities to the intellectually hungry and overlooked students like myself will be the catalyst for prominent change in our nation and world communities. As I quote the late Nelson Mandela, "The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation", and this is unequivocally true. Higher education will grant us the ability to give back to our hurting communities and lead future generations towards greater days for all. Remember, you can teach a man to fish, but without the tools to catch his own fish, he has nothing.
