Future Leaders in Technology Scholarship - College Award
As a first-generation Mexican-American, I have learned to set high goals for myself due to my strong determination in succeeding as a minority. In my career, I want to make great contributions to the companies I work for with my innovative ideas. Specifically, I want to make sure that companies can better understand their products to make them more successful. Similarly, I desire to be a leader in my career by taking on management positions and helping direct companies in the right direction. Lastly, I aim to be an innovator and create a product that has a positive impact on the lives of others. Through this process, I hope to also support minority students. Data science is a scientific discipline that truly defines me as a person. At an early age, I displayed a sense of being analytical by questioning why certain things function the way they do, such as computer apps. This led me to build a Skee-Ball app in Java. With this prior experience in computer programming, I learned that I am passionate about writing code and even accepted a job offer as a web developer. Aside from programming, I also enjoy statistics, given the fact that I like to use probability to my advantage in everyday life. Altogether, my passion for computer programming, statistics, and having an analytical nature has made me driven to study data science so that I may combine all of my interests to make impactful data-driven decisions and innovations. Considering the numerous applications of data science, I will use my knowledge to help industries like agriculture implement more data-driven technology. Growing up in an agricultural community, I have noticed the many struggles that the industry faces. However, with data-driven technology, I know that these businesses will prosper. Such advancements could help agriculture companies manage crop diseases, with computer vision and machine learning algorithms. In addition, data science could also help the agriculture industry combat climate change by collecting such crucial information and creating a database to optimize their production cycles. Above all, I highly value using data science to solve other industry's problems, and I aspire to make these great contributions. By understanding the obstacles that one has to overcome as an underrepresented minority in a STEM field, I am motivated to be more involved at Digital NEST. Digital NEST is a nonprofit organization geared towards helping underrepresented youth gain the technical skills they need to be successful in our progressing society. Having been a member of Digital NEST for a few years, I hope to continue working with them by becoming a contributing donor and aiding in their efforts to expand to other underrepresented communities. Lastly, as a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at UC San Diego, I also would like to continually support minority students by providing them with resources like personal tutoring and advising sessions. I believe that I am a great candidate for The Future Leaders in Technology scholarship given my career goals, the problems I hope to solve in the future, and my commitment to underserved minorities. I aspire to be a role model to underrepresented groups in the field of data science and using my experiences as a minority within this field, I hope to support future generations. This scholarship will also allow me to take the first crucial step towards applying data science to the real-world with an internship. Through this internship, I will be a valuable asset at Virtasant by being a team player, applying my prior knowledge to perform tasks, and persevering at finding data-driven solutions.
