Bio

My name is Micah Purvis, and I am a freshman majoring in Psychology. I’m deeply passionate about mental health and committed to using my education to make a meaningful impact in the Black community. Growing up, I saw firsthand how stigma, lack of access, and cultural barriers affected mental well-being, and I knew I wanted to be part of the change. My goal is to become a psychologist who not only provides care but also advocates for awareness, healing, and empowerment in underserved communities. Through this journey, I hope to uplift others, break down barriers, and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate future.

From a young age, I witnessed the challenges that weigh heavily on individuals and families in underserved communities: poverty, addiction, mental health struggles, and systemic neglect. These experiences have not only shaped who I am but have also solidified the mission I’ve chosen for my life—to serve others with empathy, advocacy, and action. Currently, I volunteer as a mentor through a pen-pal program at Winston-Salem State University. This program allows me to support young Black boys who are growing up in environments where positive role models are scarce. Each week, I engage in discussions focused on emotional wellness, goal setting, and decision-making. Through this connection, I aim to be a consistent, supportive voice for youth who may not otherwise have someone in their corner. These humanitarian acts are deeply personal to me. I have seen what happens when young Black men are misunderstood, under-supported, or outright dismissed. I believe everyone deserves someone who believes in them and listens without judgment. That is the kind of person I strive to be, just like Mike was. His story reminds me why I continue doing this work, even when it is difficult or progress feels slow. I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in psychology, with a double minor in public health and biology. My goal is to become a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in working with marginalized Black communities, particularly young men and teens. Education is the foundation that will allow me to serve more effectively and sustainably. Through my studies, I am learning not only the theories behind mental health but also practical tools such as how to create trauma-informed care plans, how to advocate within flawed systems, and how to address addiction as a treatable health condition rather than a moral failing. Beyond therapy, I aspire to one day open a nonprofit organization that offers free or low-cost mental health services, mentoring programs, and support groups specifically designed for Black youth and families. I want to build a space that reflects the love, energy, and community-centered spirit Mike gave so freely. I want to create a place where young people feel seen, supported, and empowered. Receiving the Michael Pride, Jr./ProjectEX Memorial Scholarship would be both an honor and a responsibility. It would signify that someone believes in me the way Mike believed in others. I will carry that belief forward in every life I touch. Just as Mike was always there for his community, I promise to show up for mine with compassion, purpose, and unwavering commitment.
