Growing up in New York City, I recognized clearly how access to opportunities and resources can shape a person's future- whether it’s having the financial means to attend the school of their dreams or access to support systems that open doors to new experiences.While my community provided me with many valuable educational and personal opportunities, I became aware that many underserved communities lack the same access to support systems, particularly in financial literacy and mentorship. Watching how financial knowledge can influence people's opportunities inspired my passion for accounting and my long-term goal of becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who uses financial education and community engagement to create meaningful change. One of the most impactful experiences that have strengthened my commitment to service and inclusion was participating in Howard University volunteer service trips for my first two spring breaks of my college experience. In Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee I served under the community development and youth empowerment initiatives. Although I was excited for the experience, I was also nervous about working with youth because I had never spent significant time mentoring children outside my immediate community. However, my time with youth at the afterschool program quickly became the most memorable part of the trip. The students’ energy, curiosity, and openness made every interaction meaningful. I especially remember helping one student practice reading and work through math problems independently. At first, they often waited for reassurance and avoided attempting problems. Over time, I watched their confidence grow as they began solving on their own. Seeing that transformation reminded me how powerful encouragement and support can be in helping young people believe in themselves. It also reinforced the importance of investing in youth and creating environments where they feel seen, valued, and empowered. Through this experience, I learned that service is about building relationships, listening to different perspectives, and creating inclusive spaces where people feel supported. My commitment to strengthening communities has shaped my academic and professional goals. As an accounting major, I aspire to become a CPA and increase representation in a profession where minority voices remain underrepresented. Through my university, I earned a tax department internship as a freshman, where I developed professional skills and saw how financial knowledge helps individuals and businesses make informed decisions. In addition to my internship experience, I serve as a financial advisor for the nonprofit HBCU ABLE Inc., an organization that connects HBCU alumni with HBCU students. In this role, I manage help lead workshops that guide students through the scholarship application process. Through this work, I helped coordinate two scholarships totaling $2,800, providing students with financial support that eased barriers to their academic success. These experiences have shown me that financial literacy is more than understanding numbers; it is a tool that can create confidence, independence, and opportunity for individuals and families. My education will continue helping me strengthen underserved communities by giving me the technical knowledge, leadership skills, and professional experiences needed for long-term impact. After college, I hope to develop financial literacy programs that teach budgeting, taxes, saving, and investing in underserved communities where access to financial education is often limited. I also hope to combine my passion for service with mentorship opportunities that empower youth to pursue careers in business and entrepreneurship. My experiences have taught me that true empowerment comes from giving people the confidence and tools to succeed independently. Whether through mentorship, financial literacy, or community service, I hope to continue creating opportunities that help individuals believe in their abilities and build stronger futures for themselves and their communities.
