I want to enter the nursing program that any striving pre-nursing student wants to be in because I want to impact people's lives. The effect I want to bring is to help them from their most challenging time in life and bring them joy and prosperity. My ultimate goal is to nurture any patient I encounter and make them feel known and heard while encouraging them during their struggles and recovery. So far, I have finished my first year at California Baptist University as a Pre-Nursing student with a 3.8 GPA and have made life-long friendships that I know won't break. The community I've found at CBU has encouraged me to bring more compassion to others and learn from other students about their personal life stories, struggles, and goals. This has sparked my eagerness to bring healing and warmth to people's hearts. When people are vulnerable with me, that's where I find the most joy because I want to be there for them when they're going through a hard time. Halfway through my freshman year, I found the Palomar Health Internship program online. I quickly applied, knowing that this would be an excellent opportunity to get my feet in the water while shadowing nurses in a hospital. I was interviewed and accepted, and now I'm in the program. I couldn't be more grateful, but now I have to take every moment I can to learn from helping patients with partial bed baths, transferring them from gurneys to beds, ambulating them to the restroom, and so much more. I've had to attend a Skills Day that Palomar Health led to evaluate that we practiced the skills and verbalization that we were required to learn to handle patients. It was an exhausting day, but now I know I'm prepared and equipped. I will be an official intern from June through August of 2024, helping patients in the Oncology department of the Escondido Palomar Health Hospital. I'm one step closer to getting my hands on what it's like to be a nurse, and I'm ready for whatever I face. In the Oncology department, I know it's emotionally draining as well; staying strong for the patients who are fighting for their lives is difficult to watch. But I know I'm called to be a nurse because I know I want to do that. I want to be able to bring joy and strength to the patient's lives and fight alongside them. This internship will give me the experience of a lifetime that will help me pursue my dream of being a nurse, learn how to use equipment, take samples to laboratories, and interact with patients. As of now, I want to be a nurse. I want to bring healing emotionally, physically, and mentally to any patient I have and inspire them to keep looking forward and never doubt themselves.

I want to study and learn about entrepreneurship. After researching extensively on how to put an end to unauthorized mica mines in Madagascar and India, I hope to start my non-profit organization to end this child labor exploitation. My goal in studying entrepreneurship is to not only end child labor in these mines but to find alternative jobs for the thousands of families who are forced to work in these dangerous conditions and provide them with an education in living a more sustainable life. Mica mining is frequently the only activity that enables families to put food on the table and survive in areas with high rates of poverty. Children frequently need to make extra money for their parents because so many households struggle to make ends meet. There are considerable risks involved with mica mining because it is unregulated and, for the most part, thrives in secrecy. Children must fill a full basket with mica flakes to be paid. They frequently have to spend the entire day in the mine to accomplish that, depriving themselves of the opportunity to attend class. Children who spend their childhoods working as miners of mica are ensnared in a never-ending cycle of cruelty and suffering, which also reduces their employment prospects in the future. Some end-users choose to completely stop using items that contain mica because they are aware of how exploitative the mica supply chain may be, while others switch to synthetic mica. Theoretically, if the demand for mica declines, fewer kids will be employed in its mining, making it appear like a viable alternative. However, in reality, the manufacture of synthetic mica frequently lacks transparency, making it impossible to claim that this option is completely free of child labor. Furthermore, if we stopped utilizing mica products altogether, many families would lose their only source of income. Without mica, entire populations would be pushed into abject poverty in Madagascar and India. Finding a solution to the apparent moral conundrum of whether or not to use mica is difficult. Simply avoiding mica-containing products won't solve the problem. Instead, it's crucial to educate children and their parents about the value of education and to give them the professional training and skills necessary to find employment elsewhere. That will lessen their reliance on illegal mica mining, allowing Indian and Malagasy children to have joyful childhoods free from abusive work. But I can only overcome this obstacle and help these families by pursuing entrepreneurship. By placing Christ at the core of my major, I hope to improve my areas of weakness and build upon my areas of strength using my knowledge, tools, and experience from my education about non-profit organizations.

My dream goal in life is to build my own organization protecting children from child labor and being forced into mining an ingredient called mica in illegal mines. These mines are located in India and Madagascar hiding more than 20,000 children in mines and putting families into extreme poverty. Once I major in entrepreneurship, I want to fight against child labor in our world and educate families to pursue a healthier understanding of employment.
