My name is Mia Urban, and I am currently pursuing my dreams as a student in the Contemporary Dance program at Boston Conservatory. I study a wide variety of styles with a primary focus on ballet and modern here at the conservatory. Beyond movement, I have love for all things art––painting, baking, and crafting––but dance has always been, and still is, my deepest passion.
Growing up, I had the privilege of watching my mom take her college dance classes. Being so young, I don't remember every detail, but I've heard countless stories of how I would try to join in and leap across the floor to be just like her. The way she moved and expressed herself inspired me to embody her very being. From those very early moments, my passion for dance began to blossom. For as long as I can remember, it has been my dream to perform and teach around the world.
I want to pursue a career in dance, not only to fulfill the passion within me, but most importantly, to create a lasting impact on those around me. I love to teach and inspire, and I believe in the transformative power of the arts to spread love and positivity. My personal experiences with mental health––both my own and those I've witnessed within my family––have shown me the great therapeutic value of dance. When I had nowhere else to turn, dance became my voice, helping me express how I felt when words weren't always enough. Even watching others dance and express themselves brought me a sense of healing.
Recently, I lost a family member to suicide. While this passing has deeply affected me, it has also drawn my attention to the mental health of those who may be silently struggling around me. This experience has fueled a new direction in my life as I am now looking to minor in psychology in hopes of exploring areas of dance therapy to use my art and passion to help others. Everyone deserves access to this beautiful form of expression, especially when words fall short.
My greatest joy comes from giving back to the community and telling stories through movement that leave others feeling seen, moved, and inspired. I truly believe dance holds so much more power than we often realize, and I am committed to using that power for good. My love for dance has always been strong, but now that my passion is rooted in purpose, I feel more determined than ever to share it with the world.
